WOTL TOGETHER Well, here we are! We are in the midst of a pandemic that is impacting
our health, our lives, and the way we live them. We are fighting an
enemy that is faceless, raceless, sexless, non-denominational and non-
partisan – we will beat this enemy, together. Yes, stuff will be in
shambles for the foreseeable future, but there is a big green light at
the end of the tunnel. And, that green light is built on the actions we
are taking now so that all of us can get through this. These are the
physical things that are not just nice to do, but mandatory – like self-isolation, and social distancing.
And, these things are based on the values we all have of fairness, kindness, accountability, resilience,
respect, and courage. These are the values that unify us and so we will keep on living and doing what
we have to do to get through this – together.
Speaking of the green light at the end of the tunnel, we believe that we need to continue to look ahead
and do what we need to do to make our community the best place it can be for our residents…and in
the middle of the doom and gloom, we all need some positive stuff to think about. So, since our General
Meeting is cancelled in April, we have decided to proceed with our Internet Vote, as a Special Meeting,
on the funding allocation for the 4 Special Capital Projects that were approved by the WOLRA
Membership back on October 8th 2019. To ensure we are compliant with the relevant legislation and
WOLRA Bylaws and Policies, we consulted with the professionals. Not only are we compliant but given
that the members have already approved the projects in general, the Board is duty-bound to carry out
decisions that are in the best interests of the Corporation and overwhelmingly approved by the
membership in October 2019. Based on a review of the Canada Non-profit Corporations Act (CNCA) &
Regulations, WOLRA’s By-Laws and Relevant Policies, a valid vote on the Special Capital Projects can
and should still take place without an “in-person” GM. This Internet Vote will be called a Special
Meeting and as such the requirements for notification of the membership are satisfied given that the
proposed vote was referred to in Minutes and in the Neighbourly News since January. In addition, there
was notification placed on our website and an E-Blast on March 24th, and accordingly on April 14th,
(twenty-one days after notification as per Bylaw 3.05), we will begin the Internet Vote.
Having satisfied the legal requirements to have our Special Meeting consisting of an Internet Vote, we
are also adding some positive thoughts for the future and a better community at the end of the tunnel
with this Internet Vote. Plus, if we approve the project funding, and I am asking everyone to VOTE YES,
then we can begin some work when people need to keep working, when our facilities are not in use and
disruption will be lessened, and we want to keep our place in the Contractor’s workload so we can avoid
any workload delays. Also, it should give us all something positive during these trying times, to think
about down the road. I don’t know how you all think, but I can tell you I can use some positive
thoughts.

Continued from previous page…
Please refer to page 28 - 30 in this publication (and on our website www.wolra.ca), for the details of the
SPECIAL MEETING – CAPITAL PROJECTS INTERNET VOTE. You will see there are four motions that
must be voted on. We are asking each WOLRA Member to cast a vote between April 14th and midnight
April 21st. You must cast your vote in the “Members” section of the website, so you will need your
password to enter (it is on your Membership Card). You will be required to enter your name to
vote. Please be assured that the software has provisions that do not allow us to match the name with the
vote – in other words, we will have a list of names of who voted but we will not be able to tell how you
voted. It should also be noted that any name that has voted more than once will be considered a spoiled
ballot and that person will be contacted.
So, our vote is coming up and we hope we will have some positive news for everyone by April 22nd. In
the meantime, please self-isolate when required, and please, we must practice social distancing…
no if, and, or buts about it. Stay healthy, stay positive and we will get through this together.

in the province to close their doors.
Frontier locked the WOTL Rec Centre
doors at 1pm that day.
It is unknown when it will be re-opened.
All activities/events cancelled/postponed.
Anyone returning early from
vacation or Snowbirding,
who are having house checks,
please leave phone message,

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
As per usual, Our Neighbourly News Magazine is available online, WOLRA
Members are sent a link and print copies are hand delivered to those who are
housebound or have no computer/internet. Extra print copies of the Neighbourly
News will be in a box in the mail kiosk beside Rec Centre, to the right of entrance
doorway (instead of the Library). As before, first come, first served.
As you can see, this is a much longer edition of the NN. We really want everyone
to have as much information as possible in these challenging times. Keep in
mind that the information is ever-changing, so best to check your news
channel, online news or www.wolra.ca for up-to-date information on the
situation. We want to try to stay positive and hopeful that this will all peter out
eventually.
So, since there is little else to do, sit back, relax with a glass of your favourite
libation and read on.

Okay, but honestly, how privileged are we
that during a global pandemic we can just
stay warm at home reading, working, still
being educated, creating, with little worries
and a fridge stocked with food? Let’s
remind ourselves to be grateful today.
And while we are at it; let’s be SO grateful to
all the people who are not lucky enough to
be able to stay home, who are keeping the
world running so that we can, and some-
times having to put up with a lot of crap
while doing so:
Store clerks and cashiers, restaurant
workers, medical people, postal workers,
sanitation/garbage workers, volunteers and
anyone else who is risking infection by
working through this mess.

FROM/DE: Prince Edward County Detachment DATE: March 20, 2020
FRIDAY FRAUD TALKS: COVID-19 EDITION
(PICTON, ON) - As folks continue to respond to the ever evolving climate surrounding COVID-19, the
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Prince Edward County Detachment would like to remind everyone not to
let their guard down when it comes to scams. Fraudsters are attempting to take advantage of these times
and are attempting to profit from consumer fear, uncertainty and misinformation. While fraudsters
continue to utilize traditional techniques, they have developed a series of new ideas in attempt to exploit
the current trend. A few of the current scams include:
• Fraudulent government, healthcare or research information accounts
• Unsolicited calls, emails or texts giving medical advice
• Unauthorized or fraudulent charities requesting money for products or research
• Questionable offers including miracle cures, herbal remedies or faster testing
• Fake and deceptive online ads including cleaning products and hand sanitizer
Fraudsters are also posing as a number of agencies including:
• Electrical companies threatening to disconnect power
• Centre for disease control and prevention
• Red Cross
• Government departments
• Cleaning or heating companies offering duct cleaning services or air filters to protect from COVID-19
These fraudsters continue to evolve and develop new techniques. See the attached link for information
pertaining to scams surrounding COVID-19 specifically. COVID-19 Scams

A fake NETFLIX message (in my case a text message) asking me to update my credit card information or
they will cut me off...add that to the list. Not COVID-19 related, but recent and nasty all the same.
Apparently others have received this message as well.
I have had the email (not text) in the past and it was real. I know because it happened when my credit
card had reached its expiration date. But the logo was much more realistic than what is being sent out
now. BE CAREFUL! ...NN Editor

some time to simply
breathe. Just 15 mindful
breaths (about one to two
minute’s of time) can give
you a break - some space to
put a little more perspective
in the moment, to feel gratitude towards your
health, your home, your family and friends. So with-
out changing anything or forcing anything, just
simply breathe through the nose. Feel the sensation
of that breath passing through the nasal passages,
along with the expansion of the inhale and the
relaxation of the exhale within your body. You can
draw in other sensations like being aware of the
position of your hands or the connection of your
feet on the floor. If you find your mind wandering to
other things, don’t beat yourself up. That’s the
nature of the mind. Simply come back to the breath
- 15 easy, natural breaths.
Do this several times throughout the day and notice
how merely focusing on the breath can clear your
head, put things in a better mindset.
If you are curious about the above exercise and
have any questions or concern, please don’t
hesitate to give me a call or send an email.

Wow! Such Community Spirit in These Challenging Times… From Rita Berzins, whose idea it was to raise community spirit by making noise at the
end of our driveways at noon, to the neighbours who turned up to do so, to the E-
bikers who were out and about honking their horns and generally making noise, to
people who just emerged from their homes to say “HI!” (great showing at the Villas,
Monroe and Conger!) and Geoff T. blasting music from his car. Even the garbage man
asked what was happening and congratulated us. What an impressive event! (03/19)

“…wanted to share how good it felt to be part of our neighbourhood. I hope the 12 noon front porch
neighborhood get-together grows day to day. I heard music and voices a few streets over which put a huge

THE BOARD NEEDS YOU!
Wellington on the Lake is a wonderful place in which to live in
retirement. Here we find friendship and support from others,
especially in times of need, as well as so many interesting
activities in which we can participate. Your residents’
association, WOLRA, plays a large part in making WOTL what
it is today through its efforts in negotiating with the
management of our community and its sponsorship and
support for the volunteers and activities that we all enjoy. To
do so requires assistance and support from all of us.
Each year in April, the Board establishes a Nominating Committee whose task is to seek candidates to
replace Board Members whose term of office is ending June 30th. This year, Doug Little’s and Paul
Denault’s terms will end. Paul will not be running again. Doug has not yet made a firm decision. So we
will be looking for one or two replacement Directors for these positions. Our Bylaws require that at least
one Director must be a leasehold resident, so we must also ensure that requirement is met. Now that
the Board may have up to ten members, it is desirous of ensuring that we also have an additional Board
Director in place for the next Board year, bringing the number of Directors to ten.
As Past President, I have volunteered to Chair this year’s Nominating Committee. I am seeking two more
volunteers to assist me in this important task. If you are interested in helping out, please contact
me. The Committee will begin actively searching for candidates in April as all the Snowbirds return
home. If you are interested in serving on this Committee, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me
anytime now at [email protected] or after April 3 at x3083. For more information on the process
for this committee’s work, see our Bylaws: Nominations & Elections Policy on our website at
www.wolra.ca.
I you are interested in putting your name forward for election to the new Board year of July 2020 through
June 2022, please contact me at the address above at any time. A proposed slate of candidates must be
posted by early May and the nominations process closes at the end of the May General Meeting on May
12th, so time is of the essence.
Please consider stepping forward and taking an active part in the decision-making process
that continues to make this community an even better place to live. Helping to pave the way
for the future while contributing to making our present lives the best they can be is a very
satisfying role to play in life. Our community thrives when we all participate.
WE NEED YOU; NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

COMMUNITY PHOTO DIRECTORY
TIME TO SIGN UP FOR YOUR PHOTO APPOINTMENT POSTPONED??????
Every 5 years since WOTL began, there has been a Community Photo
Directory. This directory contains photos of all the WOTL residents,
plus many of the Activities, Committees and Events. For those of us
who have been lucky enough to own one, it has been very useful for
putting faces to names.
These directories are FREE, as is one 8x10 photo. You may order
more for family and friends at a reasonable cost.
Photo sessions are supposed to take place during the first 3 weeks in June, but the current
situation may require re-scheduling. We will see how things are by Easter and let you know. The
whole thing may have to be re-scheduled to the Fall.
IF the Rec Centre re-opens by mid to end of April, there will be a binder in the lobby with appointment
times for you to sign up for your photo session in June. E-blast will notify.
If you are not already on the list of helpers, please do let me know if you can help. If you are, you will be
contacted closer to the date. Thank you!

Thank you from our Cuban friends
During our recent shortened trip to Cuba earlier in March we experienced the joy and gratefulness of
our Cuban friends. Many of you in WOTL donated items for us to take down. Our trip was an enjoyable
one. It started with the Toronto check-in where the attendant did NOT charge us for the huge package
with items for mobility donated by the Lion's Club of Wellington; from a walker to a bathroom chair,
crutches and canes as well as an "air-boot". The female workers smiled when receiving some needed
undergarments or clothing. The gardeners were so happy to work with gloves that we took down,
picking up garbage or pruning the garden.
But especially our Cuban family, Raul, Doralis and our goddaughter Leslie , appreciated the special
items we took to them and many of them were donated by you; thank you from them. Doralis is now
able to offer manicures with such an incredible variety of nail polish thanks to you. Neighbours and
friends just came to her house to see the colours and she increased her clientele within the first days.
During our stay we experienced true friendship, love and warmth with the sun and beach and ocean. All
of it will remain in our memories. The hotel was unable to process a credit to our credit card for the
shortened stay. Now we have our next stay paid for and look forward to the return.
While there, we also noticed the shortages, limitations and ingenuity of the Cuban people to come up
with innovative solutions; kudos to them. They know how to live without and still smile. We can learn a
great deal from them in this time of crisis, limitations, regulations and infraction on our so much loved
"personal freedom".
We are in self-isolation and do not get around yet, but I heard that in Picton is a quote on the soon to be
finished hotel across the post office.
"We are each other's harvest, We are each other's business, We are each other's magnitude and bond."
Gwendolyn Brooks
How true is that! Stay safe, keep your physical distance and use other means of staying connected.

FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS IN WOTL
We are in (insert your own adjectives here) times but as in all such historical crises there will be an end
to this. The economic impact of these days still awaits us but as seniors we perhaps have it a little better
than working people, particularly if you are fortunate enough have stable pensions. Your Board, on
behalf of our Residents Association, has elected to proceed with the Capital Projects that have been in
the works since last October. We believe the timing to carry out these projects is now. We have an
opportunity and a responsibility to both support local businesses and get needed repairs done when we
are not using those assets.
An electronic vote will take place during the week of April 14th through April 21st. Not all of us have
access to the internet and as such we are trying to find a workable solution for you as well. Included with
the April Neighbourly News home deliveries will be instructions and a paper ballot. An element of trust
will be necessary, but those instructions will allow for anonymous voting, assuming you trust me to
honour your wishes. I assure you all I do not want to know how you vote and will make every effort
toward maintaining my ignorance (Pam thinks that will be easy for me).
Your disconnect from our electronic communications may have you confused or scared and searching
for information. As the Director of Communications I will make myself available to discuss whatever you
need, to answer your questions or direct you to someone who has answers. My number is 613 885 3160
and please try to call before Happy Hour.
I have said this before and I reiterate, we are fortunate to live in a community where support for one
another is part of our history and our culture . We can be grateful for that spirit
of cohesion that allows for "end of driveway celebrations" as seen in recent
days and who knows what other creative ideas will pop up in the coming days.
Stay strong folks and let's be thinking of how we might be helpful to one
another.

The April 14th General Meeting has been cancelled and the Board will have a Special Meeting to
conduct an Internet vote on the funding for the Capital Projects that were approved by the WOLRA
Membership on October 8th, 2019. This Internet vote constitutes a Special Meeting as per Bylaw 3.04.
Notification for this meeting/vote was provided in the March Board Minutes and the January, February
and March Neighbourly News. Notification was provided on our website on March 24th and twenty one
days later on April 14th (in accordance with Bylaw 3.05, the Special Meeting via an Internet Vote will
begin and conclude at midnight on April 21st. We have consulted professionals and for this Special
Meeting/Vote, we are compliant with the Canada Non-profit Corporations Act (CNCA) and Regulations,
and all WOLRA Bylaws and relevant policies.
At this Special Meeting, WOLRA Membership will be voting to approve the funding for four major
projects. Each project is funded with 50% being provided by Frontier Management and 50% by WOLRA.
These projects are:
1. Repair and refurbish the Snooker Table
2. Construct the Outdoor Living Structure (formerly known as Shade Structure)
3. Repair and resurface the Shuffleboard Courts
4. Repair and resurface the Tennis Court
These projects were approved at our October 8th, 2019 General Meeting. However, according to Fiscal
Policy, Paragraph 7.2 , the Membership must approve all non-budgeted expenditures over $2000, hence
our Special Meeting/Vote. It must be remembered that this vote is not a request for monies, since all
funds required to complete these projects, are currently available.
Any WOLRA Member in good standing can vote online during the voting period. A paper ballot will be
delivered to people without Internet access (approximately 50 members) and arrangements have been
made for them to vote and those votes to be collected maintaining Social Distancing and all Health
Protocols. The votes from online will be tallied with the paper votes to form the final count to determine
each motion’s approval.
As per our Bylaws, each WOLRA member is allowed ONE vote. This vote will be cast online. To vote
online a WOLRA Member will access the website (www.wolra.ca) and enter the Members section of the
site (remember the password is on your Membership Card). Each member will also have to enter his/her
name when voting. This will allow a list of names who have voted online to be produced and cross
checked to ensure there is no duplicate voting. The voting mechanism online does not allow the WOLRA
Board or Membership to see how a particular name has voted – everything is confidential. If, however,
there is the same name voting twice on the website, then this vote will be considered a spoiled ballot,
removed from the final tally and the person contacted.
Major Project Descriptions
1. SNOOKER TABLE MAJOR REFURBISHMENT
After surveying the members of the Snooker Club for options on refurbishing/replacing the
Snooker table, the WOLRA Board has selected to have our table refurbished. This option was
recommended by some of the Snooker Club members for the following reasons:
• The Snooker table is an antique, having been manufactured about 70 years ago and should
be preserved.
The Snooker table was manufactured by the Riley Company in England and is arguably the
best built table in the world. Continued next page...
Special Meeting - Capital Projects Internet Vote
Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 29

...continued from previous page
• The table is of regulation size as used in professional tournaments and preferred by some of the
Snooker members for playing on.
• The major refurbishment will bring the table back to almost new condition. The Snooker players
who have played on the table for up to 25 years consider it as part of our community. The
refurbishing will add life to the table for years to come.
Work Detail: Refurbishment includes labour and materials to square up, level and re-seam the
slates; provide new pockets, new bumpers and new cloth covering and replace any missing hardware.
Cost quotation: $7438.79 WOLRA portion $3720
2. OUTDOOR LIVING STRUCTURE (SHADE STRUCTURE)
This covered space is a place to just hang out and relax with a coffee and the paper or a cold drink
and a good book. Located in the midst of the sports fields it provides relief from the sun and a
place to relax and chat with neighbours who happen by. It could be used by groups wanting a
place for a group gathering like a picnic, BBQ or birthday party (or any party or dance). It might
spawn morning coffee gatherings, domino, chess or checkers game events, afternoon Happy
Hours, Ukulele practices, Tai Chi, Yoga, Meditation and on and on...the possibilities for structured
and unstructured socializing are endless. This project has been on the wish list for years and it is
within reach.
Work Detail: Build a roof-on-stilts-styled structure measuring 24’ x 30’ sitting on the interlock stone
area just west of the horseshoe pits running parallel to the Rec Centre. Senior-friendly outdoor lounge
furniture will be located within the confines of the structure to permit unstructured socializing throughout
the months when the population is at its peak. A cost sharing arrangement has been struck whereby
Frontier will supervise the construction, fund the labour component and contribute 50% of the cost of
the furnishings.
WOLRA portion of materials and furnishings $15,000
3. SHUFFLEBOARD COURTS REPAIR
Want to spend more time outdoors, enjoying the summertime, engaging with your friends and
neighbours playing Shuffleboard? This fast paced easy to learn sport is just the exercise to keep
you active during the warm summer months. The courts are available for play as we offer a Tag
Draw, competitive, very informal, get together Thursday mornings at 10am, offering lots of laughs
and instruction if you are new to our sport. The other session, on Tuesday mornings, is also a Tag
Draw, but will be more competitive, with points awarded during the season at the end of which
there will be an open competition to award our season champions, a must-do event.
We are at a point where the 4 courts are in much need of repair, as the concrete bed has shifted
causing the discs to skip across the surface. The actual court surface shows signs of wear mostly
due to the seasonal changes, i.e. summer heat to winter snow and ice impact on the surface.
Work Detail: Shuffleboard Courts Repair including the sandblasting of the courts to remove any wax
and loose paints, fill expansion joints with masonry cement and repaint playing surface and numbers
with enamel paints.
Cost quotation $3948 WOLRA portion $2000

4. TENNIS COURT RESURFACING
We have approximately 50 members of WOLRA playing Tennis and Pickle Ball. Our numbers are
increasing as new neighbors move into our community. Everyone is welcome to join us. The courts
are used Monday to Saturday from 8 am-12:30 pm. Sunday we have Pickle Ball.
There are some cracks and some areas on the court are lifting. These areas pose safety issues for
our members. We feel that since we live in an Active Adult Community and over 150 of our
members play Snooker, Shuffle Board and Tennis, ALL of these projects should be supported.
Work Detail: Includes pressure washing, levelling out the low areas with Master Seal resurfacers,
filling cracks with Master Seal crack fillers, reapplication of 2 coats of Seal Master colour finishing and
re-marking the court lines including the Pickleball Courts.
Cost quotation $11,300 --- WOLRA portion $5650
PLEASE NOTE that Members may ask questions via email ([email protected]) or by calling

RELAY FOR LIFE
ANNUAL CANCER FUNDRAISER - 2020
Every year Prince Edward County
participates in the Cancer Society’s
Relay for Life program and for most of
those years Wellington on the Lake has
had a team present at this event and
been a major fundraiser. Last year we
were the 2nd highest fundraising team.
This money raised goes directly into cancer research
projects and support programs for people dealing with
cancer. Given the high incidence of cancer in our age group
it truly is a worthy and vital cause.
Having organized our team for the past 4 years I think its
time to give the team a new face, so am looking for
someone who sees the importance of this fundraiser to
step up and take over.
The actual event takes place at the beginning of June and
this year the plan is for it to be at Wellington’s LeHigh
(Essroc) Centre. Our fundraising efforts normally start up in
April. It’s not a huge commitment, but it does require some-
one to coordinate
things.

EARTH DAY CLEANUP – WE CAN DO THIS!
Earth Day is Wednesday April 22nd. We have usually done a cleanup around
our community on that day. This year we cannot do it as a group activity,
but there is no reason that we cannot go out as individuals or couples and
do some cleanup either on that day, or during that week. There are also lots
of good reasons why we should get outside and enjoy some fresh air.
The worst areas tend to be along Prince Edward Drive, our side of the Loyal-
ist Parkway (from LCBO to Mary Street) the Millennium Trail, the short trail
at the end of Aletha and anywhere that builders’ debris has blown. If you
want to participate in sprucing things up around our community, take a bag, wear gloves and after you
have finished, put the bag out with your own garbage (for this time). If you want suggestions on where to
go then call me. If enough people are interested, then the Wellington Beach is another area we can tidy
up (if you ever want to see where small plastics wind up then look carefully along our
shorelines!).
And if you don’t want to do the cleanup then just get outdoors, we can tidy up our own yards and
breathe in some fresh spring air.

CRAFTS & LAUGHS
Did you know that this group of avid knitters & crocheters has been
active for nearly 18 years? Since 2002, the Crafts & Laughs ladies
have made some 9,000+ teddy bears for children in places where
catastrophes have occurred. Each Wednesday morning, the group
meets and catches up on community happenings while making teddy
bears, blankets, or other fibre craft projects.
Although there have been many donations of yarn, fibre stuffing and fabrics (for teddy bear bags), the
supply inventory is running low. If you can contribute with yarn, fibre stuffing or fabrics, please feel free
to call me at 613-403-0286.
If you’re interested in learning more about the group, sharing a project idea and a laugh or two, drop by
the Rec Centre on Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. (Postponed until re-opening of Rec Centre)

WOTL Matters AN OLDIE BUT GOODIE...
A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a
particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him
for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet,
extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy
some beer with it instead of dinner?"
"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.
"Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?"
the man asked. "Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. I haven't
played golf in 20 years!"
"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm
going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked
by my wife."
The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?" The man
replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking
and golf."

When this is over, may we never again take for granted…
A handshake with a stranger, full shelves at the store, conversations with neighbours, a crowded
theatre, a routine checkup, coffee with a friend, the stadium roaring, each deep breath, a boring
Tuesday, life itself.
When this ends, may we find that we have become more like the people we wanted to be, we were
called to be, we hoped to be, and may we stay that way - better for each other because of the worst.

STROKES
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THE STROKE PREVENTION CLINIC AT THE BELLEVILLE HOSPITAL
by Barbara Burgess, Wellington on the Lake resident
What to do if you think that someone is having a stroke:
• Contact 911 and tell the operator that you need an ambulance and that you believe that the per-
son is having a stroke.
• The operator will then give that message to the paramedics and the individual will be
taken to the Belleville Hospital Emergency Room.
• The operator will also contact the Stroke Prevention Team at the Belleville General Hospital who
will meet the patient in the Emergency Room thus bypassing triage.
• The Stroke Prevention Team will immediately take you to have a scan done to firm up the
diagnosis and begin treatment immediately.
If the operator is not told that you think the individual is having a stroke, the patient will be taken to the
nearest ER which is the Picton General Hospital. The Picton medical staff will then have you transferred
by ambulance to the Belleville General Hospital - meaning that valuable time will have been lost prior to
starting treatment. With a stroke, every minute counts.
Another piece of information is that if you think that the individual is having a stroke, do not give him/her
any Aspirin. Depending on the cause of the stroke, an 81 mg Aspirin can cause further damage.

UPCOMING ANNUAL GARAGE SALE
In previous years the residents of Wellington on the Lake held a Garage & Bake Sale the first Saturday in
May. This event attracts people from all over The County and beyond, and generates substantial money
to be used in our community.
This year it was decided to hold the sale on Saturday, May 16th which falls on the May long week-
end. Hopefully we will have more reliable weather and also attract some of the many tourists visiting the
area.
For this event to be successful, we need volunteers for various jobs, we need inventory to sell and of
course baked goods. The first meeting of all the volunteers will take place Thursday, April 16th
2-3:30 in the main hall of the Rec Centre.
So mark May 16th on your calendars for the sale, collect your unwanted items as you spring clean
and come out to the volunteers meeting April 16th. It’s a good way to meet new people, give back to
your community and have fun doing it!

The Bathtub Test
During a visit to the mental asylum, I asked the Director “How do you determine whether or not a patient
should be institutionalized?” “Well,” said the Director, “We fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a
teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the
bathtub.”
“Oh, I understand”, I said. “A normal person would use the bucket
because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No,” said the
Director. “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near
the window?”

SNOOKER CLUB OVERLOAD This year the Snooker Club has had more people wanting to
play than we have time for in our Monday time slot. We had
40 regular players on Mondays, then stretched the regular
players to 44 resulting in a Monday that is too long. This
year we have 53 people who wanted to be regular players
but could only put some of them on the spares list. We have
18 people on the spares list who would like to play more.
Also, with more people moving in the overload will only get
worse.
I would recommend that a volunteer start a 2nd club (perhaps on Wednesdays) to accommodate
all the people who want to play. I will run the Monday Snooker Club for one season (2020/2021), then
we will need someone to volunteer to take over, with help from the volunteers we have now.
See also SNOOKER TABLE MAJOR REFURBISHMENT article on page 28/29.

UPDATE
What uncertain times we live in right now!
This is just a brief note that as of now we are not cancelling any of the 2
trips we have planned - the one in July to see the Broadway Musical Show
in Campbellford and our long awaited trip to Agawa Canyon.
We will talk about it at a later date. If the virus crisis lingers longer than
early summer, Westben will be closed and we can not go. If the crisis
remains into the summer we all might not be able to travel anywhere and
the trip to Agawa will be cancelled. We will keep you posted. For now - stay safe and healthy.

ATTENTION WELLINGTON GOLDEN VOICES
Spring is almost here and time to start thinking about
singing again with the Wellington Golden Voices choir.
First practice will be held on Tuesday, May 5th at 1pm in
the Rec Centre. Cost is $30. New members are always
welcome. If you like to sing and would be interested in
joining us, please contact me at [email protected].
See everyone in the Spring!

CARD ELIMINATION
As you have probably heard, Rene and Donna St James have retired
from running various activities for our residents. I have volunteered to
continue the Saturday night Card Elimination game. I will be assisted
by Theresa Mainville and we have booked the hall for one night a
month until November beginning April 11th (NOW POSTPONED
UNTIL MAY).
At that time we will have the games every Saturday evening, except for
December, until next spring. If you would be interested in assisting us
it would be greatly appreciated. Just talk to either Theresa or myself
and we will see what we can work out. As this is one of the more
popular ways of killing the winter blahs any help would be appreciated.

My name is Bob Hicks, I am a WOTL resident, WOLRA Board member as well as an
Ordained Minister with a background in Pastoral and Chaplaincy. Given my background,
I am wondering if there is a niche I can fill? I do want this community, that we call
home, to know if there is anything I can do in respect to talking to you or listening
or praying with you and your family, or even to giving a caregiver a break to go for
a coffee, I am here for you.
I have also worked as a Chaplain with residents and their families in a long term care nursing home in
Brampton, Ontario for a number of years and I will be working with the Celebration of Life Committee.
Everything said or done will be in strictest confidence.
I can be reached by email: [email protected] or phone: x5454. Thank you for your time and I look
forward to meeting you on this journey we call life.

Because we need an even number of pages for printing purposes, this page
is devoted to “filler”.
Here is something that hopefully will make you laugh sent in by Jerry Puklicz:
Tom Hanks survived 4 years on an island as a castaway.
He spent a year in an airport without being able to leave.
Caught AIDS in Philadelphia.
He was in World War II and rescued Private Ryan,
He went to Vietnam and rescued Lieutenant Dan,
Was on a boat kidnapped by Somali pirates,
He survived Apollo 13 trying to reach the Moon,
Landed a Boeing on the Hudson River,
If that son of a bitch dies of Corona Virus, we are ALL f*cked!!!
Run Forrest, run!!!!
