"BROMLEY i» n market and union town, head of a petty sessional division and parish -with stations on the South Extern and Chatham railway, 10 miles from London, 14 aorth-wost from. Soronoalt* and 0 *outb-by-east from Greenwich; it is on tko Hostings line of road, through Sere-noaks and Tonbridge, near the east bank of tho Kavensboume, in tho Western division of the county, hundred .of Bromley and Beckenham. iatho of Satfon- at-Hone, rural deanery of West Hartford, archdeaconry of Maidstone, and dioc«se of Canterbury and within the jurisdiction of tho Metropolitan police (who have a sta- tion here) and of the Control Criminal court. Bromley -was, from April, 1867, governed by a Local Beard under the “ Local Government Act of 1858," but cow is controlled by a District Council of 16 members, nnder tho “ Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Viet. c. 73); tho town is partially paved aod lighted with gca by a company, and supplied -with water from works at Shorthands, the property of the Kent Water Works iGo- and -drawn from wells in tho chalk. On January 1st, 1878, a short lino of railway wns ■ opened to (his -town from, the Grove Park station on the SLondon and Tonbridge broach of the South Eastern satlway, affording direct cotumuoicntion with London •bridge, Cannon, street and Charing Cross. Tho church, in Pare road, erected in 1879-80, at- a co3fc, including site, of £s>4co, is of stone in the Per- pendicular stylo, and has a turret-, with spire, containing one bell: there am 700 sittings.
