1. 개요 (). 여과(filtration) 정의 분리기술(Separation technology)일종으로 유체(액체 또는 기체) 속에 들어있는 불순물 입자(오염의 원인)망사나 스폰지와 같이 기공을 가지고 있는 재질에 통과시켜 유체와 불순물 입자를 분리하는 방법으로. 초창기에는 필터재질이 다양하지 못해서 10 m 이하의 오염입자를 제거하기가 힘들었으나, 지금은 필터 재질(P.P., PES, PTFE, Nylon 66, Gore Tex)다양하게 개발되어 0.1 m 이하의 입자도 분리가 가능하게 되었으며 현재 Ultra filtration 영역과 중복되는 현상이 발생하고 있다. 넓은 뜻에서는 기체 속의 현탁(懸濁)고체와 액체입자를 분리시키는 조작도 포함되지만, 이것은 일반적으로 여과집진(濾過集塵)이라 하며, 단순히 여과라 때는 고체-액체 분리조작만을 가리킨다. 여과는 화학실험 등에서 침전분리 등에 널리 응용되는 외에, 화학공업을 비롯하여 기타 공업에서 가장 일반적인 중요한 단위조작의 하나이며, 분리시키는 고체입자도 0.1 이하에서 수백 μm 이르고, 고체 농도도 모래여과기 등에서와 같은 극히 묽은 것에서 50 % 이상의 슬러리 (slurry)까지 광범위하다. 여과재로는 실험실에서는 여과기 ·유리여과기 ·유리섬유 ·석면 등이 흔히 사용되며, 공업적으로는 ·나일론 ·다공성 금속 ·금속섬유 등이 사용된다. 일반적으로 조작을 촉진시키기 위해서 여과재의 양쪽에 압력차를 두어 액체의 투과를 촉진시키는데, 흡인여과나 가압여과가 예이다. 밖에 가열하거나 원심분리의 원리를 응용한 것도 있다. 또한 분리하고자하는 고체 입자가 0.1∼수 μm 정도의 콜로이드 입자나 분자를 여과시키는 데는 조제조건(調製條件)따라 여러 가지 지름의 구멍을 가진 콜로디온막이나 셀로판막을 사용하기도 하는데, 이것을 한외여과(限外濾過)라고 한다. 최근에는 부유물과 유기물을 동시에 제거하고 냄새까지 없앨 있는 중수도 여과기술도 개발되어 수자원의 확보뿐만 아니라 배출되는 오염물질을 줄여 수질관리 방안으로 활용되고 있다. 중수도 여과기술 하나인 고도산화 여과장치 기술은 ·수를 규조토로 거른 오존(O) 또는 과산화수소(HO)투입해 기물을 완전 분해해 살균 처리하여 재사용 가능한 물을 확보하는 기술로서, 여과, 유기물 제거, 살균, 등을 동시에 처리할 있어 설치 면적이 기존 공법에 비해 4 분의 1 불과하고 유지비도 적게 드는 경제성이 매우 뛰어나다. 이러한 중수도 여과 기술은 생활 ·폐수, 산업 폐수, 수영 , 목욕탕 등의 폐수를 정화할 있어 환경 오염 예방과 함께 비용 절감 효과도 기대되어 진다.
