Custodians of Club Trophies Required Over the years QVVA have presented many members with

trophies for club related awards mainly for events and

restorations etc.

Many trophies have been presented by companies also

reflecting achievements on events and restorations.

The committee decided not to hand out a lot of these trophies

and have rewarded members with a gift instead. Most members

agree that trophies are dust collectors and they just get put in a cupboard until being

returned for the following years presentations.

We do not have any area for them to be left permanently on display so they are now in

storage in the club library and in the club shed. Many are starting to show their age.

Some of these you may have won a few times and have a special connection for you or

you may have donated the trophy, so please let us know if you would like to be a caretaker

so we can put it aside for you.

We are asking members to be custodians of these trophies in the meantime.

They will all be put out on a table at the next two general meeting in January [24th] and

February [28th] for viewing.

The Kankanya wall cabinet that was in the main room is now on the wall in the library.

I Tried E10 fuel in the old car! By Clint Frater

I have had the Plymouth now for 18 years and have no problems with fuel other than a fuel pump that decided not to work on a tour down Tweed Heads about 4 years ago.

I normally run 91 grade fuel on short trips but on longer runs I will use BP Ultimate which makes the car run a lot better especially when hills are involved.

With BP advertising that a couple of tanks will clean out your fuel system I assumed that the inside of the Plymouth tank would have been clean. Looking through the filler it did look clean.

So about 2 months ago I mixed some Caltex E10 in with the 91 grade that was in the tank and the car ran OK. Later on I decided to refill it just with E10. The car ran alright with no noticeable decrease in power or anything.

The other day I ran out of spare fuel for the lawn mower so I syphoned some fuel out of the Plymouth through a clear hose. I noticed some dark things flowing through the hose which I first thought was air bubbles. Looking closer at the stuff flowing with the fuel it appeared to be a rusty sludge with some big lumps amongst it.

After getting enough fuel I filtered the fuel through a cloth and was surprised how much of this rusty gunk was in it. The mower ran OK with the cleaned fuel much to my surprise as I had been told mowers will not run on E10.

I decided to have a look at the fuel bowl in the engine bay and that was still nice and clean. I then got under the car and checked the plastic filter just out of the tank prior to the electric pump and it was full of sludge. It sure did a great job.

I syphoned the rest of the fuel out into a container and then filtered it again through a cloth. The amount of sludge that came out was staggering. It was a wonder the fuel lines were not blocked up.

I then drained the tank and again a heap more sludge came out. I have flushed the tank out and have replaced the inline fuel filter.

Now I have to decide whether to use E10 again thinking that all the gunk has been cleaned out or stick to 91 & Ultimate. I don’t know if the advertising about 2 tanks of Ultimate will clean your fuel system is totally correct. The advertising about E10 being a much better fuel now days than when first supplied, I not sure. It might on a new car but a 1928 one it did not. I think the old 91 will have to keep the Plymouth going. It is getting a little harder to get under the car now days to change filters so the less I have to do the better.

½ a cup of sludge from the fuel tank

Letter Received from Father Denis Martin, Foundation member of QVVA

1st November 2017

To Clint.

Very sincere thanks for the QVVA 50th anniversary book which you were so good to deliver

to Nev Doherty. It is a beautiful production and a great pleasure to take up and peruse. In addition, it is

even more satisfying to review how “Pepper’s mob” has survived and grown to provide so much

happiness for members and incentive to restore and preserve so many outstanding cars. I did attend one

of the celebrations out at the Club Rooms and it was a pleasure to see the cars lined up on the property.

There are many stories that could be recalled about the exclusiveness and snob mentality that existed

around the years the club was formed. It probably would do no good to record them now yet it still exists

to some extent. Nevertheless, QVVA thrived and overall is a “happy” club.

And how the motoring scene has changed during the last 50 years! So many makes have disappeared

from the scene and buying a new car is little different from the replacement of a washing machine. The

roads then were much quieter too.

Having owned by 1926 Buick for 25 years I was persuaded to part with it to a friend of my brother’s. It did

relieve me of garaging problems. He kept it and had it down at the Gold Coast for the next 29 years

(1987-2016). Then last year he was using it for his daughter’s wedding when along came a tourist, visiting

from Germany, who saw the car, decided he had to have it, and soon after he drove it up from the Gold

Coast and into a container at Eagle Farm. It is now on display in a motor museum somewhere in

Germany. I am hoping to hear from him sometime soon about the history of the car whish still has its log

books etc. When it left Australia it still had our QVVA badge on the front! Just to further the story, I did

miss that car and all its associations so much that to fill the gap I acquired a De Dion Bouton of 1905. It

shares the garage corner with a Darracq of 1907, a lovely little car which I first saw many years ago and

never dreamed would come my way. Neither is easy to drive in today’s traffic but I do go around the local

suburban streets.

So, the interest which existed when QVVA was formed in 1964 is still very much alive. Thanks again Clint

and to Jeff Shapcott’s wife Jeane, to Graham Porter and to all members of QVVA who helped to produced

the book and shared it with me. The book was a nice way of recording the early members and all they

put into the formation of QVVA.

QVVA Tour to Bracken Ridge Miniature Trains and Pelican Beach

Sunday 26th November 2017

After a week of occasional showers, Sunday arrived with fine weather and blue skies.

Most cars met at the Club Rooms while others joined in at McPherson Park where there was plenty of

room to park all 22 cars. One of our founding members, Nev Doherty, cut the Birthday cake and it was

shared around. With morning tea over it was time to ride on the miniature trains. The que seemed very

long but when the trains came back to the station it didn’t take long for everyone to board the trains and

ride around the track. Our son Ashley with Walt & Fred came along so we had two trips. The market

stalls were selling various Christmas items and some members were seen to be driving away with Santa

toys in the back seat.

The trip to Pelican Beach took us on a scenic drive thru Sandgate and Brighton and over the Houghton

Highway Bridge. We found a shelter shed to enjoy lunch together which was very pleasant as the tide

was in and the surf was up. It was lovely to see so many cars come along – some we hadn’t seen before.

Thanks to all for coming…...John & Ruth

December 2017 Events

The 9th December was our Christmas Party held at the Club rooms. This was a great night with about 60

members attending. There were lucky draw prizes throughout the night with lots of chocolates and

Christmas goodies to be won. Santa’s helper came along and distributed presents to Nathan, Matt,

Rebecca, Edward, and Melaney. Nathan, the budding builder, had managed to finish his lego build before

dessert. The food was provided by our usual caterer and was plentiful and tasty. Then along came the

magician! He was amazing and entertained each table with his skilful and deceiving magic tricks. All the

while a slide show of car events from the past was keeping us entertained.

As usual many hands make light work and the cleaning up was done. Many thanks to the committee for

their ideas and thought that was put into making this Christmas party a good one.

On the 20th December five QVVA cars joined a tour of Christmas lights in the Graceville, Sherwood,

Tennison area which was arranged by Greg & Christine. After a lovely dinner in Simpsons Playground park

Graceville beside the river we set off at 7pm to check out the lights. After the first corner and making a

wrong turn, we stayed on track for the rest of the tour. Should have taken the NavMan as it is hard to

read road signs at night. After the lights we enjoyed dessert and coffee at a corner café in Corinda. Along

with QVVA members there was a Model A Ford Fire Truck, Rolls Royce, Vintage Truck and Cheryl Nott

driving her 1952 Holden. QVVA members were Col Hinxman 1962 Buick Wagon, Greg & Christine Stevens

1918 T Ford, Hazel & Ian Fordyce 1926 T Ford, John, Dorothy, Rebecca & Matthew Milne 1928 Chevrolet

Tourer and John & Ruth Knight 1962 Dodge Lancer.

The last event for the year was 30th December at Lota Beachfront for byo lunch. Seventeen cars carrying

31 people arrived to relax and enjoy the breeze in the gazebo or under the tree. Some had lunch with

them and others went over the road for fish & chips. Treasurer Wendy surprised us with a delicious ice

cream to finish off a lovely couple of hours.

Want to know about *BITCOIN*

A lot of monkeys lived near a village.🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒

One day a merchant came to the village to buy these monkeys!

He announced that he will buy the monkeys @ $100 each. 🐵💵

The villagers thought that this man is mad.😇

They thought how can somebody buy stray monkeys at $100 each?

Still, some people caught some monkeys and gave it to this merchant and he gave $100 for each monkey. 😬

This news spread like wildfire and people caught monkeys and sold it to the merchant.😬

After a few days, the merchant announced that he will buy monkeys @ 200 each. 🐵💵💵

The lazy villagers also ran around to catch the remaining monkeys!

They sold the remaining monkeys @ 200 each.😋

Then the merchant announced that he will buy monkeys @ 500 each!

😮💵💵💵💵💵

The villagers start to lose sleep! ... They caught six or seven monkeys, which was all that was left and got 500

each.🙊🐵🐵🐵🐵🐵🐒

The villagers were waiting anxiously for the next announcement.🙄

Then the merchant announced that he is going home for a week. And when he returns, he will buy monkeys

@ 1000 each!💵💵💵

He asked his employee to take care of the monkeys he bought. He was alone taking care of all the monkeys in

a

cage.🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒

🐒🐒🐒

The merchant went home.😎

The villagers were very sad as there were no more monkeys left for them to sell it at $1000 each.☹😞😓

Then the employee told them that he will sell some monkeys @ 700 each secretly. 😶

This news spread like fire. Since the merchant buys monkey @ 1000 each, there is a 300 profit for each

monkey.😬

The next day, villagers made a queue near the monkey cage.🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐵🐒🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑

The employee sold all the monkeys at 700 each. The rich bought monkeys in big lots. The poor borrowed

money from money lenders and also bought monkeys!

🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒🐒💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵💵

The villagers took care of their monkeys & waited for the merchant to return. 😕

But nobody came! ...😤 Then they ran to the employee...

But he has already left too !😉

The villagers then realised that they have bought the useless stray monkeys @ 700 each and unable to sell

them! 😩😫😨😰😭😭😭😭😭😭

The Bitcoin will be the next monkey business

😜

It will make a lot of people bankrupt and a few people filthy rich in this monkey business. 🐒😉😅

That's how it will work

Mr Arthur Constant Aucher imported the first car into Brisbane in 1901. He had gone to Paris to study the

motor-car development and after evaluating the various vehicles on offer, he decided that a De Dietrich

would be best suited to Australian roads. The vehicle was landed on the Brisbane wharves (the SS

Wodonga) on the 28th February 1901 and over the next few months was given trial runs around Brisbane

streets. Mr Aucher had started the Helios Incandescent Gaslight and Novelty Company and this company

was the sole agent for the famous De Dietrich motor cars. The vehicle had a two-cylinder water cooled

motor rated at 6 1/2hp and was allegedly capable of up to 50kmh. In May a 15km trip from the city to

Pinkenba, near the mouth of the Brisbane River, was done in a very creditable 15 minutes, while

subsequent runs to the seaside village of Wynnum were also successful.

In September 1901 Mr Aucher shipped the De Dietrich to Melbourne to have it officially tested by that

city’s postal authorities for mail delivery/collection purposes.

Over the next two months Mr Aucher took the opportunity not only to join in on weekend motoring jaunts

with the handful of Melbourne motorists, but to try and interest the Footscray Municipal Council in

purchasing De Dietrich motor buses. Apparently the Footscray Council had been trying to persuade the

Railway Department to lower the fare on the Williamstown line to the same rates as charged to Essendon,

Brighton and other Melbourne suburbs. The council thought buying buses and going into competition

would force the Railway Department to reduce the fare. History records that the Railway Department

didn’t back down and that the council did in fact buy a bus, but not a De Detrich from Mr Aucher. To add

insult to injury, the Melbourne Postal Department decided not to purchase a De Dietrich either. Rather

than incur the expense of freighting the vehicle back to Brisbane, it is likely that Mr Aucher took advantage

of the greater awareness of the motor car in the more populace Melbourne and found a buyer for the

vehicle there – it is certainly not recorded as ever coming back to Queensland.

Project: Hot Generator. For a long time I have been investigating an intermittent loss of power in my 40 Ford by having a test drive after each adjustment of timing, plug gap, float level etc, usually with no conclusive results.....(The subject of another Project Report). After one of these unproductive tests I parked the car, wandered into the house disgusted, grabbed a recreational from the fridge and pondered what could be tried next. About two hours or so later I could detect an “electrical smell” in the kitchen so I stuck my direction finding nose in the ceiling to determine if it was coming from the roof void—no luck, the fluro lights checked out OK so I checked the lights in the garage—the smell was much stronger here but they had not been turned on, lifted the bonnet of the Ford and the generator, being prominently mounted high, sort of invited me to pat it. Well Holey Hell I soon found the answer and after the initial shock made a mad scramble for a spanner and removed the earth strap to the battery, however I did notice a spark during this operation. I stood in disgust and wondered what more can go wrong with this car, I was finding more faults than I was fixing! During this period of stunned silence I heard a distinct “click”, this gave me a clue the voltage cutout relay may have stuck and released suddenly, a quick strike of the earth strap on the battery terminal confirmed this...no spark. The regulator was removed for further inspection, this unit is a brand new reproduction of dubious parentage even though it has “Made in USA” stamped on it, the cutout relay contacts had been hot and welded together. One wonders what material was used in the contacts—platinum/tungsten? I doubt it! The generator was removed next morning (it was still warm), the armature looked very black so I didn’t bother to investigate further.....obviously burnt out. Made a few enquiries around the traps and a local auto-electrical motor/generator rewinder “specialist” was recommended so off I go with the generator, regulator and the sad story. The specialist had seen this happen many times and suggested the armature be rewound and the relay be replaced with a diode. I offered to modify the regulator but he insisted if he did it, it would be right, so that sounded good to me. “Leave it with me for a week—I’ll give you a ring when it’s ready”. This actually stretched out to five weeks and, after dogging him, eventually got the units back. During this five week incubation period a severe wind storm passed through Brisbane’s south one night, at the height of the storm I heard a loud bang and thought a limb of a tree had struck the house, had a brief look around but couldn’t see any damage so I thought nothing more of it. Next morning I went into the garage for something and found the manhole cover had fallen out of the ceiling and dropped onto the RH front mudguard of the Ford resulting in two large scratches in the folkestone grey, it looked so bad I was convinced a repaint was necessary, oh well something else to fix!... The manhole cover is now tethered with a chain! The least I could do was to get an expert’s opinion on the paint repair so I called a mobile “Scratch & Dent” man and prepared to hear the worst, however, he was game enough to smooth the damaged surface with various size grit papers and polishing liquids and the result is fairly good—I can pick the job because I know where to look, fortunately this is not Pebble Beach! Meanwhile back in the jungle and being in receipt of the repaired generator and regulator I was inquisitive enough to remove the cover from the regulator to have a look at the “craftsmanship”, it was disgraceful! The press fit diode touched its crude heatsink in three point contact places and the soldering was less than first year manual arts standard. Pic. 1

After viewing this disappointing craftsmanship I was compelled to look in the side of the generator and found something was “cock eyed” around the brushes and commutator setup. On completely dismantling the unit it was found the brushes were not in full contact with the commutator—one third of each brush overhung the rear of the commutator, this problem was caused by a shaft spacer placed on the wrong side of the front bearing. Pic. 2

Pic. 2 In addition to the above I was assured the bush and bearing were OK and did not need replacing. In fact though, the bearing shroud was damaged by the spacer, the bush needed replacing and the brushes were ¾ worn. The actual rewind job looks good except for the for the spiral groove left on the commutator from bad lathe operation. The regulator reverse current diode was replaced with an 80 Amp stud mount type on a copper heatsink as large as feasible and tested in open air. The generator is rated at 32 Amps max and the current regulator is set to about 30 Amps and the resulting volt drop across the diode is 1 Volt, this equates to around 30 Watts heat dissipation, the heatsink is so inadequate and got so hot the phenolic mounting strip it was sitting on started to cook, this set up might be OK at 10 Amps max but this restriction is obviously not satisfactory for the operation of the car. Pic. 3

Pic. 3 The original regulator fitted to the car was the standard electro mechanical type that we know and love but it was showing its age (probably 77 Yr) so I decided to replace it. The description for the reproduction replacement reads as follows... “Modern, quality electronic components inside for years of trouble free-service even under heavy loads with additional accessories running simultaneously”. The words ”Modern electronic components” cleverly infer solid state components but this is not the case, it is a standard electro mechanical unit and technically not as good as the original that Henry approved. What did I gain from this project ?.........I am a slow learner!

Rod.

Ladies Auxiliary Report

January 2018

Welcome back to 2018, and I hope all are well and have had a great Christmas and New Year with family

and friends. It was terrific to see such a big turn up at our first annual event, ‘The fish & Chip Night at

Manly’. The weather was great after a long hot day and the cool almost chilly breeze was a good relief.

Catching up in such a relaxed and casual way is the best way to start off the year, he’s hoping we can keep

the momentum going with our numbers, love of motoring and spirit of friendship. We are always on the

lookout for new and or interesting destinations for m/tea or lunch. I pass many

lovely parks that look like they would make a good stop, with

easy access, plenty of parking, big playgrounds, scenic

surroundings, shade, water and even bbq’s, but rarely do

they have toilets. If you know of any places of interest, please

pass it on.

Looking forward to a New and exciting year. Susie

Margaret Fulton’s Way: Stuff miniature marshmallows in the bottom of an ice cream cone to prevent drips. The Working Woman’s Way: Just suck the ice-cream out of the bottom of the cone for Pete’s sake. You are probably on the couch with your feet up eating anyway !!! Margaret Fulton’s Way: When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking tin, use a little of the dry cake mix instead and it won’t leave any white mess on the outside of the cake. The Working Women’s Way: Woolworths sell cakes! They even do decorated versions. Margaret Fulton’s way: If you accidently over salt a dish while it’s still cooking, drop in a potato slice. The Working Women’s way: If you over salt a dish while you are cooking – tough! Margaret Fulton’s way: Wrap celery in aluminium foil when putting it in the refrigerator and it will keep for weeks. The Working Woman’s way: It should keep forever. Who eats it?? Margaret Fulton’s way: Cure for headaches. Take a lime, but in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go. The Working Woman’s way: Cure for headaches. Take a lime, cut it in half and drop it in a double vodka. Drink vodka – might still have the headache, but you won’t care!! And finally, the most important tip Margaret Fulton’s way: Freeze left over wine into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces. The Working Woman’s way: Left over Wine??? HELLO ???????
