Charitable Gift Annuities Making a significant gift to your parish can increase your bot-tom line! By making a gift for a charitable gift annuity, you receive an income tax deduction and annuity payments for life. Plus, part of each payment is tax-free. Learn more about this wonderful opportunity by contacting Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, Archdiocese of Newark at (973) 497-4042 or by email at [email protected].

Panning for Gold One great way to raise money for the renovations is to collect Gold and Sil-ver and other precious metals. Gold is now worth $1280 per troy ounce (ozt) and silver is $15 per ozt. Perhaps you have that mangled chain or the wid-owed earring, donate it to the renovation. Maybe you have some sterling silverware pieces, an old ring or silver coins that just doesn't fit your style or are just taking up space in the draw-er, donate it. I can take it to a reputable dealer and get top dollar. It’s a painless way of giving and it really goes to a good cause. Simply bring your old gold, silver and coins to the rectory or after Mass give it to me. I can write a receipt for tax purposes if you like.

Thank you for your consideration, Fr. Paul.

We pray to the angels, for they are given to us as guardians. —St. Ambrose

Cross Catholic Outreach We welcome Fr. Nee of Cross Catholic Outreach who is speak-ing this weekend at all the Masses at all Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries. Cross Catholic Outreach was founded to create a meaningful link between parishes in Ameri-ca and the priests and sisters working in the Church overseas in the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

J udas Iscariot protested: “Why was this perfume not sold…and the money given to the poor?” (John 12:5)

What many people forget today is that the burying of the dead is a corporal work of mercy. When you get a chance, read John 12:1-11. In this scene, just a week before the Lord’s passion, Jesus and the apostles go to Bethany to visit Lazarus and his sisters. Mary, Lazarus’ sister comes into the room and anoints Jesus’ feet with an expensive perfume. Judas Iscariot objects with the pretense that the perfume could have been sold, and the money been given to the poor. He actually wanted the money for himself. Jesus on the other hand commends Mary for her act of kindness in preparing his body for burial prophetically before his death.

The human body, dead or alive, is to be treated with respect, that’s all there’s to it. A new trend in the culture today is to have shortened wakes, no funeral mass, and cremation of the body. The U.S. Bishops have responded: This is the body washed in baptism, anointed with the oil of salvation, and fed with the Bread of life. This is the body whose hands clothed the poor and embraced the sorrowing…Thus, the Church’s rever-ence and care for the body grows out of a reverence and concern for the person whom the Church now commends to the care of God. However, when circumstances prevent the presence of the body at the funeral litur-gy…it is appropriate that the cremated remains of the body be present for the full course of the funeral rites, including the Vigil for the Deceased (wake), the Funeral Liturgy (usually a Mass), and Rite of Committal (burial, interment). The funeral liturgy should always be celebrated in a church. (from “Reflections on the Body, Cremation, and Catholic Funeral Rites,” Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy).

Since 1963, the Catholic Church has permitted cremation of our deceased after the funeral liturgy. Recently however, the Holy See has granted permission to celebrate a funeral liturgy in the presence of the cre-mated remains. The Church strongly prefers that cremation take place after the funeral liturgy with the body present. I would like to center on the words when circumstances prevent the presence of the body… What could these circumstances be? is a very crucial question. At the moment I can think of 1. Communicable disease, 2. When death occurs in a distant place and transportation of the body is

prohibited or financially prohibitive, 3. If costs of the funeral are far beyond the means of the family (in which

case charity ought to be sought). Of course this has to be the mature, thought out, prayerful decision of the family/friends of the deceased with the wishes of the deceased respected. But never should it be done 1. To merely “save money,” 2. As a concept contrary to belief in the resurrection of the body, 3. Because no one “loved” him/her, etc.

Also, the remains, cremated or not, have to be put to rest. Re-spectful final disposition of the cremated remains involves interment or entombment. To place the cremains in a family grave in a cemetery with a marker or in an urn garden are options. They may also be entombed in a columbarium (mausoleum niche) for permanent memorial. The ashes are never to be scattered on the sea, in the air, on the ground, or in outer space. Ashes are not to be kept in the home. Burial at sea of cremated remains is permitted as long as the container for the remains is heavy enough to be sent to its final resting place on the floor of the sea. The mingling of ashes of different persons or creatures is not accepted practice. When we die and meet our Lord, we meet Him as individually baptized persons.

It all boils down to this: We believe in the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. This body, created by God, has been sanctified by the waters of baptism and nourished on the Body and Blood of Christ. It has loved and cared for God’s creation and has shared in his redemptive suffer-ing, and therefore must be treated with respect, reverence, and charity in anticipation of the resurrection of the dead. To hastily and nonchalantly dispose of the body, not lay it to rest, or treat it as a memento, is an act against mercy and charity. As the Lord taught us, “It is mercy that I desire.” And these are the corporal works of mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick and the imprisoned, shelter the homeless and bury the dead.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Making Those Funeral Arrangements Planning or even thinking about one’s own funeral is unpleas-ant and therefore something we tend to push far out of our minds. When the time finally comes it leaves the family stressed and overwhelmed by all the decisions they must make. You can relieve some of this stress for your loved ones by planning your Funeral Liturgy (Mass of Christian Burial). Lynn Berhalter would like to assist you in choosing the Scriptures to be read at your funeral Mass according to the archdiocesan guidelines. She can also help you choose the hymns that will add to the solemni-ty of your Mass. This is simple to do and it helps fulfill your wishes and eases your family’s burden. Make an appointment to see Lynn at the rectory to get started. Your plans will be kept on file at Holy Trinity Church and may be amended anytime you wish. Planning ahead ensures your family that the readings and music you desired are carried out and they need not worry. It is a beautiful final gesture, a gift to those who grieve. Call 201-343-5170 now and make your ap-pointment.

—San Ambrosio
