28th March President Pranab Mukherjee presents Padma awards

President Pranab Mukherjee honoured 56 eminent personalities with Padma awards at the Civil Investiture Ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The President presented five Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and 43 Padma Shri awards at the function. Here is the list of recipients:

63rd National Film Awards

Baahubali has won the Best Film award at 63rd National Film Award. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan won the Best Actor award for his role in ‘Piku’while Kangana Ranaut won Best Actress for her role in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns.”

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali won the best director award for Bajirao Mastani, while S.S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali bagged the best picture award. Here are the other winners:

29th March India has the lowest Internet connection speed in Asia-Pacific:

Report

The global average internet connection speed increased 23 percent to 5.6 Mbps in the quarter ended December 2015 compared to the same period of 2014.

The report “Fourth Quarter, 2015, State of the Internet Report” was released by Akamai Technologies Inc., a global leader in content delivery network services.

PM Narendra Modi to launch 'Stand Up India' scheme on April 5

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on April 5 inaugurate Stand Up India initiative which is aimed at creating jobs and promoting entrepreneurs among SC, ST and women by extending loans at cheaper rates.

The programme will be launched by Modi at a function to be held at Noida.

The Cabinet, headed by Modi, had in January approved 'Stand up India' scheme for providing credit to SC, ST and women entrepreneurs at lower rates.

Under the scheme, which will be implemented through 1.25 lakh bank branches, banks will give loans at the "least applicable rate" of interest.

Also every bank branch, including private sector, will give loans between Rs 10 lakh and 1 crore to at least one SC/ST and one woman entrepreneur under the scheme.

112 to be single number for all emergencies

Indian citizens in distress will soon be able to get help using a single number, ‘112’, for all emergency services in the country, including the police, fire brigade and ambulance.

At present, such callers need to dial different numbers for different emergencies like 100 for police, 101 for fire, 102 for ambulance and 108 for emergency disaster management.

The move, recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India in April 2015, was approved by the Telecom Commission.

World Bank opens country office in Malaysia

The World Bank opened its office in Malaysia which will also serve as a global knowledge and research hub.

World Bank said its new office will facilitate its partnership with Malaysia, in areas such as financial intermediation and inclusion, and to support the bank's twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity.

31st March Sergey Karjakin won 2016 World Chess Candidates Tournament

Russian grandmaster Sergey Karjakin won the FIDE World Chess Candidates Tournament held in Moscow.

In the final Round 14, the Russian grandmaster defeated American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana.

Karjakin will now play with the incumbent world champion, Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, in a match for the world chess crown in the United States in November 2016.

Government permits 100 pc FDI in online market places

The government today permitted 100 per cent FDI in the market place format of e-commerce retailing with a view to attract more foreign investments.

To bring clarity, the DIPP has also come out with the definition of 'e-commerce', 'inventory-based model' and 'market place model'.

At present, global e-tailer giants like Amazon and EBay are operating online marketplaces in India while home-grown players like Flipkart and Snap deal have foreign investments even as there were no clear FDI guidelines on various online retail models.

1st April Aung San Suu Kyi appointed as Myanmar's foreign minister

Chairperson of Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), Aung San Suu Kyi was appointed on Wednesday as the country's new minister of foreign affairs.

Suu Kyi will concurrently hold three other portfolios in the new government led by President-elect U Htin Kyaw

Approved by the Union Parliament, the three other ministries to be headed by Aung San Suu Kyi are the Ministry of President Office, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

ADB cuts India’s growth forecast to 7.4 % for 16-17

The Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) growth forecast of 7.4 per cent for 2016-17 is substantially lower than its earlier projection of 7.8 per cent.

ADB’s flagship publication Asian Development Outlook (ADO) also projected rise in consumer inflation, mainly on account of the impact of salary hike of government employees and a likely mild pick up in global oil prices.

ADB projects India’s gross domestic product (GDP) to grow 7.4 per cent in FY 2016, slightly below the FY 2015 estimate of 7.6 per cent. In FY 2017 growth is forecast to reach 7.8 per cent
