  • Helps to give the reader a clear understanding of the topic at hand The appropriate word choice helps the argument to be more direct so the reader can have a clear understanding of the position the writer has taken regarding this issue. Adds to the emotional appeal of the writing If the writer can connect with the audience through using familiar words and phrases that the audience often use, then the audience will be more considerate of your argument and could make the persuasion process more effective. Add to the professional sound of the writing It also helps a persuade piece when the reader believes the writer is educated and knows their stuff. In other words, choose words that will both help your audience to interpret your message better, but will make your writing sound classy.

  • Example 1: Students should not be required to wear uniforms because they will look the same. (not as effective as the next sentence) Students should not be required to wear uniforms because it hinders their self-expression and restricts their individualization. The second sentence gives the readers an example of how students will suffer due to the requirement of uniforms in schools. Example 2: The legal drinking age should remain the same because its a lot safer. (not as effective as the next sentence) Fortunately, the legal drinking age will remain at twenty one due the increased number of drunk driving accidents this year by under-aged drinkers. The second sentence gives a supporting fact of why keeping the drinking at twenty one may help stabilize or decrease the number of drunk driving accidents by under-aged drinkers.

  • Writing in the persuasive genre requires strategically chosen words. Commonly used adverbs, action verbs, and assruance phrases will definitely add to the persuasive technique of your writing. In addition, appropriate word choice will help the professional appeal of your document, will enhance the ways readers interpret your message, and will help your argument to be a successful one.
