I develop, implement and promote the school library (or media center) program in my school

I manage library staff, equipment and facilities, and serve as an expert in books, electronic resources and audiovisual materials.

I work closely with teachers to develop authentic learning activities for cross-curricular integration

The rapid change in communication technology requires me to continually develop a variety of resources and skills, enabling students to access, evaluate, interpret, and apply information from print and nonprint materials

I work closely with students, teachers, and administrators to analyze learning and information needs, to locate and use resources that will meet those needs, and to understand and communicate the information the resource provides

I learn the names of every student in my school ( all 550 of them!)

The mission of the Dorchester School Media Center school is to be proactive in ensuring that all members of the school community are effective users of ideas and information by providing collaboration with fellow teachers, access to a rich assortment of resources, instruction of information literacy skills in real-life contexts, and a contagious passion for lifelong reading and learning!

I believe there is no skill that is more critical for lifelong learning than seeking and using information effectively, and I believe media specialists play a unique role in teaching this skill.

Students and staff may be drawn to the library because of the warm inviting atmosphere but they should come back because they find the tools and support they need for the answers they seek

Students learn differently and have individual needs that must be met, and it is my responsibility to use multiple teaching strategies and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners. I value the differences among students and feel that much can be learned through sharing our differences.

Education is essential for future success and consider it part of my role as an educator to emphasize the value of education to students . I believe there is no skill that is more critical for lifelong learning than seeking and using information effectively, and I believe media specialists play a unique role in teaching this skill.
