Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B,
Amazingly this is the last opportunity I have to be the lead off article for the Cauldron. Over
the last two years while serving both as your First Vice District Governor and District
Governor I have tried to provide you with either something of an inspirational nature or
something of an educational nature as you go about serving your communities and the world
as only Lions can. Hopefully you found them worthy of your time to read. I also hope that
you found them helpful.
I want to thank everyone who attended the District Spring Rally on April 29th. It was one of
the largest turn outs that we have had for a while for this event. What a thrill it was for Lion
Mary Ann Belles and me to be able to present Operation Safety Net with a check for over
$8000 which was money donated by the District Clubs and augmented by a matching grant
from the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation to help a very worthy and wonderful program.
This was just another example of where there is a need there is a Lion.
Over the last month many of us have been busy trying to start a new Lions Club in the Sharpsburg – Aspinwall section of
the county. We even had a new club consultant from Buffalo NY and a representative from LCI helping out. At this writing
we have about 12 people who have signed up to be members. Putting a club in that region will definitely help increase our
presence in the North Hills/Allegheny Valley area.
I have recently returned from the Pennsylvania Lions State Convention held this year at the Penn Stater Conference Center
in State College. There were 16 of us representing District 14B. PDG Joe Donkin made us proud with his presentation about
the Lions Diabetes Center at McKeesport Hospital. At the International Banquet on Saturday evening Lion Barb Rebovich
was awarded the LCI Leadership Medal and Lion Mary Ann Belles received a Presidential Certificate of Appreciation for
all the hard work they do as Lions. Lion Marni took second place in the first-time convention goer contest. We all had a
good time and I can truthfully say that this year’s Council of Governors made some significant progress in trying to improve
Multiple District 14.
In closing, I want to thank everyone especially cabinet members and club and District officers in helping make this a great
year. It was an honor and a privilege to serve as your District Governor. I ask that everyone will support DGE Kirby and
Lion Barb as they start an amazing journey of being DG and first Lady of Lions District 14B. I hope to see you all at Lions
functions

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, Leos, and friends of District 14-B,
As I write this article, I have just come home from a very interesting and informative 95th
Annual PA Lions State Convention at State College, PA. While there, I also took part in the
Multiple District 14 State Council Meeting. The State Convention was very well attended
with 497 Official Registrants.
Thursday afternoon was the State Council Meeting at which several critical issues were
brought up and resolved, including electing PDG Eric Dolfi from District 14-M as Vice
Council Chairman. Council also voted to support a Pediatric Cancer Initiative (more a little later) in the Multi-District. We
also got to meet International President Dr. Naresh Aggarwal. On Thursday evening, all the 1st VDGs and VCC Eric got
together at the Happy Valley Brewery for dinner, drinks, and good fellowship.
Friday was filled with many meetings throughout the day, with the annual Necrology Service and Hospitality Room hosted
by District 14-G in the evening. The Necrology Service was a very beautiful, and touching way to honor and say goodbye
to the nearly 400 Pennsylvania Lions who passed away during 2017. The Hospitality Room was a lot of fun, where all the
District 14-B attendees gathered around one table and just had fun. IP Aggarwal made the rounds and talked to almost
everybody. I got to speak to him for a few minutes and told him about one of my goals for next year, which he was very
enthusiastic about.
Saturday was filled with informative seminars. I attended a seminar about Four Diamonds, the Multi-District’s new Pediatric
Cancer Partner. Multiple District 14 has pledged to raise $100,000 over the next year for Four Diamonds. You will be
hearing much more about Four Diamonds next year.
At the International Banquet Saturday Evening IP Aggarwal talked about the many things that Lions have accomplished
during the past year, including reaching a total of nearly 1.5 million members. He challenged all Pennsylvania Lions Clubs
to strive to add just one new member by June 30. If we did this, we could add 700 new members in PA and 34 new members
in the district. We had the honor of seeing our own Lion Barb Rebovich receive the International President’s Leadership
Medal, the third highest award in Lionism.
Sunday was the Melvin Jones Breakfast in the morning and in the evening, the District Governors Honors Banquet, where
all outgoing District Governors are honored for their service and given a distinctive Pennsylvania Lions Past District
Governor license plate for their car. The District Governor-Elects are pinned with District Governor Pins, and the Partners
in Service are presented with red roses by the outgoing Partners in Service. It is a very enjoyable and classy affair with
everybody in very formal wear (white dinner jacket).
The entire weekend was very memorable, and I am looking forward to attending the 101st Lions International Convention
in Las Vegas and serving District 14-B as District Governor next year.

Thank You District Governor Geoff
It takes a special person to accept the challenge of a leadership role in
any activity such as in sports, business, or any of the many volunteer
organizations. The Lions of District 14-B are fortunate to have had a
special person in that role for the past year in Lion Geoff Temple.
DG Geoff has done an outstanding job again in his second time as our
distinguished leader, also having served in 2011-2012. Lion Geoff has
accomplished all he set out to do in visiting all clubs delivering
International President Dr. Naresh Naggarwal’s program along with
encouraging an increase in membership. He has laid the ground work
for the possibility of forming a new club in the Aspinwall/Sharpsburg
area. He has attended many club functions throughout his tenure as
our leader in addition to attending all State Council meetings and the
State Convention. He has accomplished all of this in addition to serving
his own club as Secretary and being a member of the Western
Pennsylvania Lions Hearing Foundation.
Additionally, all of this could not have been possible without the
support of his wife Mary Ann. She stood by his side in all he did and
accompanied him in many of his travels and for this, we thank you!
With that being said, we the Lions of District 14-B would like to extend
our heartfelt thanks to DG Geoff and Mary Ann for all they have done
to keep our District moving in a positive direction.

The Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive in the McKeesport area
is coordinated by a McKeesport Lion – Chuck Jarrell. Chuck not
only coordinated the pickup , packing and drop-off of all donated
food for this all important day, but he also solicits donations for
the donation bags. Studies have shown that donors are more
likely to donate up to three times the food as they would have
normally given if provided a bag. This is definitely the case in
the McKeesport area! Fellow Lions and others from the
community volunteered their time on May 12, 2018 to help letter
carriers collect food donations and helped to pack those donations
into cartons on pallets to be delivered to the Greater Pittsburgh
Community Food Bank.
THANK YOU TO ALL WHO MADE THIS
POSSIBLE!

A local optical shop recently went out of
business, and I acquired the frames and lenses
that were left behind. After some searching
and finally assistance from our District
Governor, a home was finally found for
them! Dr. Linda Boss of A. Boss Optical in
Brookline, and a member of the Brookline
Lions Club, does mission trips to countries like
Haiti and Guatemala. She performs eye exams
and fits eyeglasses to individuals there in need.
What a great thing! Today, the husband of one
of her workers picked up 543 frames (adult and
children’s frames) and 264 eyeglass
cases. Keep up the great work Dr. Boss!!

The History of Father’s Day Father’s Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday
in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards.
In fact, when a “father’s day” was first proposed there were no Father’s Day cards!
Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a “father’s day” in
1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William
Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd’s mother) died
in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his
other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was
after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her
father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.
The first Father’s Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various
towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a “father’s day.”.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon
Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
Father’s Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as a father figure. Stepfathers,
uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father’s Day.
Members of the McKeesport Lions Club assisted members of the local VFW and American Legion, and
community volunteers in placing American Flags at McKeesport-Versailles Cemetery for Memorial Day.

On Saturday May 26th the Oakmont Lions Club along with volunteers from the community planted 650
geraniums on the veteran's graves at the cemetery in Oakmont. There are 650 veterans buried in the
cemetery dating back to the Civil War and many of them no longer have families in the area to decorate
their graves for Memorial Day. Lion Diane Harrell suggested that the Oakmont Lions plant flowers on
those graves. The Lions purchased a red geranium for each grave. On the Saturday before Memorial
Day the Lions along with volunteers planted the flowers. Thanks to the Lions, each veteran buried in

Lions hope to establish Lower Valley chapter; informational meeting set Wednesday
The largest service club in the world is setting up shop in Aspinwall/Sharpsburg.
Lions Clubs International, which boasts 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 locations, is targeting the Lower Valley with its simple but effective slogan: ‘Let's improve our communities.
“We Serve,” said Geoff Temple, district governor for Lions Clubs in Allegheny County. “We want to start a club here because we feel we could be of service.”
Traditionally known for supporting the blind, Temple said help can be funneled to projects that members deem important in their own communities.
“Whether it's giving money for a park or helping to shovel snow, it will all be decided by the members,” he said. “We might have a pancake breakfast or a spaghetti dinner. The members will decide.”
Typically, dues cost about $60 a year but that number is also set by members, longtime member Barbara Rebovich said. There are nearby chapters in Springdale, Shaler, Tarentum and Oakmont.
Founded in 1917 by Chicago businessman Melvin Jones, Lions clubs operate to ward off hunger in needy populations, conduct diabetes prevention and advocate for the environment. Its newest initiative is raising money to fight pediatric cancer. “Each club is resident-driven,” Rebovich said. Aspinwall Manager Melissa Lang-O'Malley said it will be a perk for members to direct money to the needs of each community.
Tim McLaughlin, Aspinwall council president, said the chapter will be a good fit for the borough. “ I think the Lions coming here is great. They have many worthwhile causes they support, and it's always a good thing to have a variety of volunteer and philanthropic opportunities for our residents to become involved in.”
Rebovich said it will be up to club members to set a meeting schedule and project list. Temple said the Lower Valley will be well served with a group actively working to benefit neighbors. Already, Lions members have purchased hearing aids for residents of Sharpsburg Towers and have sponsored eyeglass recycling drives in Aspinwall. For more, visit lionsclub.org.

Geoff Temple, District Governor for the Lions Clubs of Allegheny County, hopes to start a branch in Aspinwall/Sharpsburg. Lion Marni Latterman (L) and Lion Barb Rebovich (R) assisting in the formation of the club.

What Will Matter by Michael Josephson
Ready or not, someday it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations, and jealousies will finally disappear.
So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
So, what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought, but what you built; not what you got, but what you
gave.
What will matter is not your success, but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned, but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage or sacrifice that enriched,
empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence, but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when
you're gone.
What will matter is not your memories, but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.
Make a difference today,
Love Clint Hurdle
