Mood or atmosphere is the overall emotion that a text makes you feel. In novels, the atmosphere can change from one chapter or part to the next. For example, the mood could be happy in one chapter, but in the next it could become gloomy or ominous. Still, most novels have a dominant mood, even if there’s some variation from chapter to chapter. Cole became aware of a presence. Not movement, only a lurking presence. Grimacing, he searched the trees and the shore. At first nothing appeared different or out of place. Then something large and white broke the smooth pattern of the shoreline. He squinted, and the image cleared.

A bear. A white bear. … What really angered Cole about the bear

was that it stood there frozen on the shoreline without any sign of fear. It defied him. He looked around for some kind of weapon. In the ashes he spotted the charred blade of a hunting knife from one of the boxes. He picked it up and turned back towards the Spirit Bear.

Most novels have more than one conflict, though often there’s one overriding conflict that becomes apparent as the novel moves along.
