Two years ago, my doctor gave me a wake-up call: I needed to start exercising fast.

With a vague recollection that I used to enjoy cycling, I decided to give mountain biking a try.

Premier Christy Clark is stepping aside from any decisions related to new oil refineries after the emergence of a new refinery proposal involving her ex-husband.

Mark Marissen has been hired as vice-president of Pacific Future Energy, which today announced plans to build an oil refinery in Prince Rupert.

“I learned that this proposal was going to become something real last week,” Clark said, adding she then contacted the provincial conflict-of-interest commissioner for guidance.

Pacific Future Energy is the latest company pursuing the idea of refining bitumen from the Alberta oil sands before it’s loaded onto tankers so there’s less risk to the marine environment waters in the event of a spill.

Victoria businessman David Black, owner of Black Press newspapers, has spearheaded a similar refinery proposal, to be located between Kitimat and Terrace.

Black’s Kitimat Clean plan could use bitumen coming from the Northern Gateway pipeline – if it’s built – or else it could aim to build a separate pipeline or use trains carrying oil by rail.

Black continues to seek a $10-billion loan guarantee from the federal government to satisfy potential international investors.

Pacific Future Energy said it plans a scaleable $10-billion refinery ranging from 200,000 barrels per day

up to one million if required.

Salmer Salameh, the executive chairman of Pacific Future and the head of a Mexican infrastructure conglomerate, called it “a unique opportunity to build the greenest refinery in the world.”

The company announced its plan Tuesday and said it’s beginning pre-feasibility studies.

It comes ahead of an imminent decision by the federal government on Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project, which would carry bitumen to Kitimat for export by

tanker.“It is my

understanding that this proposal doesn’t depend or isn’t linked to any pipeline proposal,” Clark told reporters Tuesday.

She will refer all government deliberations on any refinery proposal to Finance Minister Mike de Jong. The conflict-of-interest rules for MLAs do not specifically cover spouses, but say MLAs should recuse themselves if

a situation is likely to lead to a perception they may personally benefit. NDP finance critic Mike Farnworth called it the right decision.

“It’s important that the premier is held to a higher standard,” he said.

The B.C. Liberals 2013 election platform backed the concept of Black’s refinery plan and pledged to support its development.

Black said he met last year with Pacific Future’s Mexican

backers, who initially wanted to partner with him on the new refinery. But he said they were only interested if they got majority control, something Black

rejected as against Canada’s interests and potentially leading to reduced environmental safeguards.

“The good news to me is their interest validates our value-

added concept for any doubters out there as to whether this is a good business proposition,” Black said.

“Here’s somebody else who wants to do the same thing.”

There have been no further talks on joining forces, he said.

Black said he’s not concerned about provincial bias arising from Marissen’s role.

“I’m not asking the province to pick a favourite or anything but I do hope they endorse the concept and provide funding for the concept so we can move ahead.”

Black said he’s been told by federal officials that a loan guarantee from Ottawa is possible – but only if B.C. also backs it.

“It comes down to whether the B.C. government is keen on championing this kind of project and has money for it.”

A trip aboard the MV Uchuck III gives visitors a glimpse into a unique maritime way of life.

The coves and inlets of the rugged northwest coast of Vancouver Island are home to remote logging camps, fishing resorts, fish farms and coastal communities. All of which have no road access and rely on Nootka Sound Service and its MV Uchuck III to deliver everything from groceries to fuel on a weekly basis. The MV Uchuck III is, quite literally, a lifeline to these marine outposts and carries a variety of cargo on her voyages.

The MV Uchuck III carries more than just freight. She also carries passengers who wish to experience a true “Wild West Coast” adventure. The very friendly and informative crew enjoys interacting with the guests and the ‘Kyuquot Adventure’ offers those onboard an opportunity to witness the day-to-day activities of a working marine vessel as well as see spectacular coastal scenery and marine wildlife. Departing every Thursday (year round) from Gold River, this popular two-day marine cruise takes you through Nootka Sound, Esperanza Inlet and offshore on the open Pacific to the quiet village of Kyuquot where you stay overnight.

Heading out early in the morning from Gold River guests settle in on the top

deck to take in the scenery of the inlet and its rugged forested cliff faces that plunge into the sea. Pods of kayakers hug the shorelines, eagles cruise overhead, diving down to grab fish close to the surface. Cameras are working overtime and you’re only twenty minutes out from the dock as the aroma of fresh baked muffins and coffee wafts up from the galley below.

Stopping at fish farms, supplies and food are dropped off for both the employees and the Atlantic salmon that are being raised in open net holding pens. Standing close to the action, guests watch the First Mate deftly man

the controls of the cargo winch as it lifts supplies from the cargo hold and drops them onto the dock, taking into consideration tide and wind effects on the vessel.

Heading further down Tahsis Inlet stops are made at resorts and logging operations to drop off much needed supplies. These drop offs are informative for those interested in resource industries as well as those who are more interested in the environment. It’s also an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the boat’s crew as well as workers on the dock as they work offloading supplies.

Up to this point the vessel has been

travelling in relatively calm waters, protected from the Pacific Ocean by Nootka Island. Heading out to the open ocean via Esperanza Inlet and Kendrick Arm the MV Uchuck III makes her way to Kyuquot Sound, the day’s final port of call. Guests aboard are now getting to know each other, hunkering down in the lounge, trading stories, sharing photos and enjoying a bowl of fresh made chili or soup.

A few settle in for a nap or tuck into a good book or the ever-popular ‘Nootka Sounder’, the MV Uchuck III’s own onboard newspaper with information about the vessel, the

communities, local history and the wildlife of the area. Nothing gets the guests back on their feet and back out on the decks faster than someone shouting: “There’s whales out here!” Fortunate guests get to see Humpback whales breaching as well as watching the antics of sea otters in kelp beds in the sheltered waters behind a multitude of small rugged islands along the route. This open ocean stretch is great

for wildlife viewing, bird watching and offers opportunities for taking some great west coast landscape photos.

Coming into the sheltered waters of Kyuquot Sound passengers witness what a truly remote maritime village looks like on Vancouver Island. Small cabins and docks dot the landscape, boardwalks and trails hug the shoreline of small islands and rocky outcrops, all backed by

towering Douglas fir and Cedar trees.

The evening meal is served bunkhouse style in a one-room restaurant that once served as the community’s school in days gone by.

The building, built on stilts, has an abandoned look about it, which only adds to the charm. It’s amazing how hungry one can get sitting or walking around a boat all day watching the world pass by. Accommodations include beach side cabins, B&Bs and a local resort.

Following the return trip, after arriving back in Gold River guests say their goodbyes to new found friends with whom they had shared a unique and rewarding experience. Undoubtedly, many photos will trade hands by e-mail and the memories will last forever.

1. Never take the second putt on the practice green.

If you miss it, you get to experience the three putt, which you simply don’t need in practice.

2. When you’re practicing, try putting with your eyes closed. And them guess where the putt finished. Was it short-right? Long-left? Or in the hole?! Besides being quite a fun thing to do, over time, this will massively improve your feel.

3. Don’t drop 3 balls on the practice putting green and putt from the same spot. You need to reinforce the feeling of “I only have one chance” like you do on the golf course. 3 balls gives us the same feeling as we have on the driving range, where we get too comfortable, knowing we always have another shot. You need to feel and practice under a little pressure.

4. Practice using a smaller hole. Try putting a tee in the green

so it covers one third of the hole. Then putt to this

hole. I find this good to do before a round. After putting to a small hole for 5-10 mins, it’s amazing how much bigger the hole looks when you’re out on the course.

5. When reading the green, use all your senses. In addition to

using your eyes, try to sense the ground under

your feet as you walk round the ball (don’t just

look at a putt from behind the ball). It’s amazing how much

more you’ll learn about the putt for both line and speed.

6. Pick your spot for accurate alignment. Once you have committed to

a line, pick a spot you want the ball to roll over 6 inches in front of the ball. Alignment is so key with putting, that starting a putt just a fraction off line will cause the ball to miss the hole by inches. Knowing the putter face is aligned correctly will improve confidence and give you a more positive stroke.

7. Play the putt with your practice strokes. With your practice strokes, instead of making them a general practice of your putting, actually play the upcoming putt in your mind. With each stroke, imagine the ball coming off the face and rolling towards, and into, the hole. This will increase your confidence by visualizing the ball going in, and give you a sense of the speed of the putt.

8. Develop a very strong pre-shot routine, which you stick to every time. If you break or miss any of the steps, START OVER!!! Putting is a game of confidence and knowing you have done everything correctly will give you that confidence you need to hole more putts. Do everything the same down to the number of practice strokes.

9. If you stand over the ball and second guess the line (or anything else), step away immediately and go through your pre-shot routine again. You will kick yourself afterwards and create negative emotions. Only when you are 100% sure, should you pull the trigger.

10. Get zoned in. Once you are over the ball and you have gone through your routine, your body and mind know the speed and line. Focus only on your “spot” and hitting the ball in the center of the putter.

» Riding in Campbell River

The River City Cycling Club is all about riding

in Campbell River.

� e club boasts re c re a t i o n a l

riding in the area fea-

turing both road cycling and mountain biking.

� e purpose of the club is to promote bicycling as well as encourage and facilitate tour-ing, races, bicycle outings, and all forms of recreational bicy-cling activities.

� e club hosts group rides, trail days, organized rides to other communities, and good times for all. � e River City Cy-cling Club has a unique work-ing relationship with BC Parks land managers and works directly with them for mutual stewardship and maintenance goals of the existing trails that exist in the parks area.

Riding on the Wet CoastIf you have to ride during periods of sustained pre-

cipitation, choose trails that are rocky and well

drained. � e Pump-house trails are well

suited to wet conditions and are underrated for their

fun factor. Check them out

if you haven’t been in there

in a while. Enjoy the

trails, and remember, “Ride, don’t slide!”

Riding AreasIn Campbell River we have three main riding areas, Snowden, Pump House and � e Beaver Lodge, and a cou-ple of lesser used areas, Men-zies Mt., McIvor Lake and Woods Creek. � ere are nu-merous other areas of trails, however most are not bike friendly, either because of terrain or use restrictions. We are fortunate that our trails remain snow free most years except for a couple of weeks mid-winter. In the summer there can be a shortage of wa-ter for our four legged riding partners.

It is not uncommon to see deer, elk, bear and occasional-ly a cougar in any of our riding areas. Please be respectful of the inhabitants and carry out any litter. Also be aware that in most of the Snowden and on Menzies Mountain, help is many hours away in the event of serious injury. In the event of an unrepairable mechan-ical, the walk out can take

hours. Be prepared and ride within your limits!

Snowden Demonstration Forest � is is our largest area with over 100 kms of trails. � is is a cross country and all-moun-tain area, well suited to 5” trav-el bikes. Although Snowden Forest trail di� culties range from Green Circle to Black Diamond, these trails are not well suited to the absolute beginner rider, as most of the trails are challenging with technical features.

� e trails traverse a variety of terrain, from dense forest to open rock blu� with incredi-ble views. Unique to this area is the almost total absence of roads. Most of the trails are signed and marked for the preferred direction of travel, although most can be ridden in the reverse direction by a strong climber. � e trails of the Snowden Forest are designat-ed for non-motorized use, so leave the quads at home.

have signed a Partnership Agree-ment for the trails in the Snowden Demonstration Forest. � is means that the RCCC will provide trail maintenance services and ensure the trails are safe to ride and MoTCA will ensure that the RCCC is included in any recre-ation decisions that may a� ect the Snowden Forest.

Snowden is also the home of � e Campbell River 50 km Trail Chal-lenge. � is annual event features some of the best trails we have to o� er and is a test of any rider’s stamina, both physical and men-tal. Comprised of two loops, the actual loop length is 27km for a total of 54km.

Pump House � e Pump House Trail was the � rst true mountain biker’s area in Campbell River, built by riders for riders. Suitable for the beginner with a little experience, yet with some challenging sections for the more seasoned rider.

Trails are in forest and on open rock blu� , the entire area is within Elk Falls Provincial Park and the trails are recognized by Parks for bike use. A competent rider with a knowledge of these trails could cover them all in a couple hours easily.

� e Beaver LodgeQuite � at and with many of the “trails” built on very old rail grades, this is the area most suit-able for the family or complete beginner. A strong rider with area knowledge can ride everything “the Beav” has to o� er in a little over an hour. � ere are a few hid-den gems in the “Beav” with tech-nical features that will challenge most riders.

Woods Creek has a small network of fairly easy trails with little ele-vation gain.

Woodsman’s Wilderness Trails on Menzies Mountain are Camp-bell River’s newest and most re-mote riding area that contrasts the mountain’s rugged “working forest” character with its pristine subalpine meadows, mountain views and exhilarating descents on the way down.

If you are pedaling up, expect a long, steep and rough access road climb of an hour and half to the start of the trail. � e descent is a long XC and technical DH trail from the end of the road access back to the starting point, with some optional but highly recom-mended trails in the lower eleva-tions, such as Fauxhawk.

� e trails vary in di� culty throughout the descent, but rid-ers should be very comfortable with technically di� cult DH trails before attempting to ride this re-mote area. Many riders take over � ve hours to complete the round trip, however a seasoned rider can complete a loop in half that time.

Woodsman Wilderness Trails are not maintained by the River City Cycle Club. Trail conditions (in-cluding snowpack) and hazards will vary with the season. Ride within your limits and at your own risk! (Note: Mohawk will NOT ap-peal to any but the most skilled and risk tolerant riders.)
