Keith Brymer Jones is a master ceramicist and design expert who has over three decades of knowledge and experience under his belt. He is the designer behind his award-winning Keith Brymer Jones Word Range and also works collaboratively with every other brand under the MAKE International umbrella.

After an early career devoted to ceramics, Keith created pots and different shapes for a string of large retailers including Laura Ashely, Heals, Monsoon, Habitat and Conran. In 2008, he met his business partner, Dominic Speelman and subsequently joined MAKE International as Director and Head of Design. They set up a studio in a converted bakery based in Whitstable along the Kent coastline.

Keith designs every single item on his potter’s wheel before he takes the prototypes to China to work with his colleagues at the factories. Keith visits the factories at least twice a year to meet with his quality control team on the factory floor to ensure the highest standard of quality is maintained. Every item in the Word Range is hand-debossed and checked by the quality control team at least three times. As MAKE International grew, Keith expanded his Word Range and began collaborating with

other designers, illustrators and creators to bring inspiring ceramic products to those who love design.

Keith’s Word Range contains approximately 500 products and is sold in over forty countries with a large and loyal following. To this day, the Word Range follows Keith’s design philosophy: ‘to create simple yet stylish products which are pleasing to the eye, practical in the modern home and, above all, make people happy!’

Keith is a passionate advocate for art, craft and design education. He believes that everyone should have the opportunity to make and create. He has been appointed patron for The National Society for Education in Art and Design. In 2019, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Staffordshire University for his continued work

with the University as well as the city of Stoke-on-Trent, the home of the pottery industry. He can often be seen extolling the virtues of creativity to students of all ages at various schools, colleges and events.

In 2015, he debuted as an expert judge on the BBC2 show, The Great Pottery Throw Down, where his readiness to shed tears at the contestants’ work attracted many comments on social media. Filming of the third series has begun in the autumn of 2019 so we are expecting to see more of Keith on the television in the near future. Keith has become a well-known television personality and has also presented the Victorian House of Arts and Crafts and Made in Britain, both on the BBC.


WORDWhat’s in a…

The Word Range is a collection of super white porcelain ceramics which feature colourful, hand-stamped words in retro, typewriter font. Keith has been carefully refining and expanding his Word Range for over twenty years.

The origins of using words as a design concept stem from Keith’s dyslexic tendency to initially view words as a shape rather than read their meaning. Common in people with dyslexia, Keith’s brain interacts with the word as a shape so it made perfect sense to him to decorate a ceramic with a word.

Scion Living is an upbeat British brand known for its zesty colours, friendly characters and clean Scandi-inspired designs. The current range features characters such as Mr Fox, Spike the Hedgehog, Pedro Penguin, Marty Moose and Lintu. This tableware range includes mugs, espresso cups, bowls, egg cups, glassware and various table accessories.



Scion burst onto the scene back in 2012 as the newest member of the Harlequin family. The word Scion has two meanings, a ‘young shoot or twig’ and a ‘descendent from a notable family’, so it’s the perfect name for the brand!

Scion Living was conceived to fill a gap in the market for unique, vibrant and reasonably priced home products. The brand really kicked off when one of the Scion designers drew a little orange fox – Mr Fox was created and rapidly became Scion’s most iconic design. Followed later by the arrival of Spike the Hedgehog,

the distinctive style of Scion Living aims to provide fresh ideas for modern living. Now with many more patterns and new characters, Scion living continues to expand.

The Scion designers work in their large studio in Leicestershire. Their delightful designs are firstly placed on fabric and wallpaper before being later partnered with specialist manufacturers under licence. MAKE International owns the license for Scion ceramics, glassware and tableware. Tatty Devine, the playful statement jewellery brand, is the creation of co-founders Rosie and Harriet. Working and designing from their studio in East London, Rosie and Harriet are responsible for over 300 new jewellery designs each year and have received an MBE for their contribution to fashion. Their fun, standout designs incorporate everything from wildlife to astronomy, art, feminism and food and have had a loyal following of lifelong fans for nearly 20 years.


Started in 1999 by founders Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden, Tatty Devine is the world’s destination brand for playful, acrylic statement jewellery. Designed in East London and made in Kent, their standout jewellery is all about expressing yourself in a fun and distinctive way… ‘Be yourself, have fun and make a statement!’.

Friends for over two decades, Rosie and Harriet met when they both attended Chelsea School of Art to study Fine Art. Prior to that, Rosie grew up on the Isle of Wight and Harriet grew up in Rochester, Kent. Both were raised on a healthy diet of craft with homemade clothes being the norm. From a young age, they felt destined to explore a creative world and attend art school. Although they studied Fine Art, both Harriet and Rosie were most attracted to the act of making because of its tactility and importance within culture.

On graduation from art school, Rosie and Harriet moved in together and neither one was interested in getting a ‘proper’ job. This is when Tatty Devine was born selling leather wrist cuffs. Harriet stumbled across some leather bags discarded outside an upmarket furniture store one night on her way home from the pub. Together Rosie and Harriet made leather wrist cuffs from the bags and sold them at Portobello and Spitalfields markets. They were selling out quickly every week and as time went on Rosie and Harriet got more experimental embellishing the cuffs with studs and crystals. After a while, they got bored of wristbands and started experimenting with found objects such as plectrums. Harriet knew lots of boys in bands and after band practice, like a

musical magpie, she would pick up the discarded plectrums, punch holes in them and thread them onto chains and earrings. This is where the iconic Tatty Devine plectrum brand symbol came from.

In 2001, Rosie and Harriet learnt how to laser cut acrylic to make unique, fun statement jewellery and that’s when things really took off! Tatty Devine has steadily grown ever since. Tatty Devine was shaped by Rosie and Harriet’s frustration at the absence of exciting jewellery available. Everything felt commercialised, mass produced and poor quality, so Rosie and Harriet satisfied the public hunger by making their own bright, funky jewellery… ‘we’ve always loved to stand out and make a statement and what better way than to wear massive jewellery?!’

Nowadays, Tatty Devine are based in their studio on Brick Lane, East London and have received an MBE for their contribution to fashion. Their designs start as a conversation between Rosie and Harriet with Harriet annotating in her sketch book. The drawings are then laser cut to make fantastic jewellery. All the Tatty Devine jewellery is manufactured in Kent by a skilled team of expert makers who are passionate about Perspex and are extensively trained by Tatty Devine. Tatty Devine have an extensive following of lifelong fans who have been with them since the very beginning – they still love what they are doing and collecting!

In 2017, Rosie and Harriet began speaking to MAKE International’s Head of Design, Keith Brymer Jones about a possible collaborative ceramics range. Rosie and Harriet both love ceramics and have always collected interesting pieces and Keith understood the brand and was excited by its potential. Therefore, they agreed to work together combining Keith’s expert knowledge of ceramic shape and form and Tatty Devine’s brilliance in contemporary, quirky design. They chose eight of Tatty Devine’s signature designs from their Classic Collection and produced eight mugs and two vases. Each mug is crafted from porcelain, has a capacity of 350ml, features a coloured interior and gold lustre brand stamp. In keeping with the Tatty Devine jewellery and brand, the ceramics are eye-catching and eccentric with a punky twist and perfect to add statement charm to any home.

Today Rosie lives in Stoke Newington with her husband and two sons whilst Harriet lives in a mid-century block by Victoria Park, London with her daughter. Both flats are full to the brim with stuff as Rosie and Harriet love collecting things! Harriet is amazing at tracking down oversized ceramic objects and Rosie has a pretty impressive record collection, from Girl Ray to Jim O’Rourke!

Unfortunately, our Tatty Devine mugs are not microwave safe as there’s metal in the gold lustre brand stamp… worth it for a bit of gold though right?

Drawing inspiration from his visits to numerous National Trust properties, Keith has created a simple and elegant range of contemporary ceramics. This collection superbly combines both Keith’s design philosophy ‘to create simple yet stylish products that are pleasing to the eye’ and the National Trust’s desire to bring the nation’s heritage and beauty to everyone. The National Trust Collection is available in six clean & understated partially glazed colours, with an exposed porcelain base. Each hue is inspired by different aspects of the National Trust.

Inspired by the views of the South Devon Coast, Bert Fowler created the nautical brand, Bert & Buoy. He is an illustrator, designer and creative director of a successful design agency with a portfolio of projects for major museums, art galleries and theatre. Raised in the Midlands, it was a romance that brought him down to Devon, where he married his love and set-up home in the coastal town of Dartmouth.

Living by the harbour, Bert was inspired by both the coast and the boats passing by. He was driven to create his own designs around a nautical theme, and set himself a target of creating the Bert & Buoy brand and producing the first line of products within only six weeks. The public’s response to Bert & Buoy’s designs was incredible and he decided his side-project was worth investing more time.

In 2017, Bert attended a trade show and met MAKE International. MAKE International’s commitment to celebrating British designers led to discussions between MAKE’s Head of Design, Keith Brymer Jones and Bert. A collaboration soon followed culminating in the Bert & Buoy range of designer mugs. Keith’s encyclopedic knowledge of ceramic forms and techniques really brought Bert & Buoy’s designs to life.

Minimalist to extreme detail, Bert & Buoy’s products represent a modern, contemporary take on life by the sea in Dartmouth. Glass tumblers have been introduced to the Nautical Niceness range with the notorious Dartmouth print, featured in his collection, holding impeccable detail of the recognisable coastline. You will also find 4 other designs including ‘Fishy Escape’ and ‘Boat Race’. There will still be some recognisable features on them, including

the colourful fish swimming in sync. The new designs are an even more modern development on his established brand. The glasses have a volume of 360ml and are perfectly suitable to hold a morning glass of juice or something stronger should you wish.

Outside of work, Bert loves nothing more than foraging for rusty gold at flea markets, chandlery stores and little independents tucked away in the depths of Devon. He collects everything from vintage shop letters and hand-painted signs to mid-century chairs and textiles, old fishing ropes and buoys. He can also be found free running or walking along the stunning South West coastline, barbequing on the beach and spending time with his family and friends in his favourite haunts in Torbay, Totnes and Dartmouth.

Every part of the collection starts off as an original work of art inspired by life on the British Coast. This shifts nautical homeware from twee clichés, anchors and buckets and spades to a new, fresh, contemporary direction; just call it Nautical Niceness.


In the course of her career as an award-winning illustrator, textile designer and author, Jane Foster has had over 20 books published and collaborated with major brands including Apple, Habitat, Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and Ikea. Her bold and happy designs feature on a wide range of products from raincoats to cushions as well as prints and, of course, ceramics & glassware.

Jane works from her garden studio in South Devon where she creates illustrations & screenprints influenced by 50’s and 60’s design, tinged with Scandinavian style that appeal to adults and children alike. In her free time, Jane loves renovating here quirky 1950s home and visiting the local beaches with her partner and daughter whilst looking for striped pebbles.

Rosa Parks

I lived in the US for a year when I was a child and that is when I first learnt about racial inequality. As a student studying in Manchester, I joined the Anti-Apartheid movement and regularly took buses down to London to attend rallies. Rosa Parks was named the ‘mother of the freedom movement’ many years earlier and to me, has remained an iconic figure representing racial equality. Her courageous act of refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white man got her arrested. A bold reminder of how hard times were then but sadly, also a reminder that racial inequality still exists now.

Mary Quant

As a student in Manchester, I used to get my hair cut at Vidal Sassoon as they did very cheap cuts for students so the young hairdressers could experiment. I once came out with an asymmetric bob which made me look a bit like Mary Quant. I’ve had many bobbed haircuts since and my love of monochrome has definitely been influenced by Mary’s early 60s iconic geometric designs.

Amelia Earhart

Amelia was the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic. A brave woman who inspired many other women to be courageous and achieve great heights. As a child, she played football and baseball. She studied mechanics and later medicine, before deciding to train as a pilot. She gave regular talks on women’s rights and broke many records. Amelia reminds me that women are just as capable as men.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo has always fascinated me throughout my adult life. Not only have I been interested in her self-portraits, I’ve been fascinated by her life, her relationships, her politics and her style. She endured chronic unimaginable pain after her bus accident and much psychological pain throughout her life. Her ability to keep creating through these difficult times was remarkable.
