BROWNELL CARNIVAL

Cotner Lodge has a special relat ionship with Brownell Elementary School. Being offered a seat on Brownell’s Advisory Council has given Cotner a closer look at the results of our investment in Brownell student education. On May 21, Cotner Lodge presented gift cards to four Brownell students, winners of the Bikes for Books program. The joy on their faces, the notes of appreciation, and the proficiency test results say it all.

Cotner Brother Graciano Lopez used his excellent skills as a clown and magician to enthrall Brownell Elementary students during their annual carnival. There were rides, games of skill and games of chance to mark the end of another successful school year. Cotner family volunteers pitched in to help make the carnival a success.

DAY AT THE LAkE

On May 22, the Cotner family retreated to Branched Oak Lake for a little rest and relaxation. With a reserved shelter house at Lieber’s Point, people choose to eat, fish,

play games, shoot trap or just plain visit. What a wonderful way to relax and recharge. A special thank you goes out to Tyler and Diana Weers for all their hard work planning and managing the event.

PRESENTATIONS AND RECOGNITION

As reported last issue, Cotner Lodge held it’s annual Past Masters’ Dinner on May 17. This month I continue my report and present more pictures from the event.

Russ Reno was asked to identify the most satisfying accomplishment of his year as Grand Master, his response was the state-wide blood drive. LANCASTER LODGE HOSTS CHIP!

Lancaster Lodge No. 54 hosted a CHild Identification Program (CHIP) event at the lodge on Sat., June 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event focused on the Scouts of the Cornhusker Council, Boy Scouts of America and their families. Although 54 has staffed a CHIP event in the past, it was never solely in charge of coordinating, arranging, and handling all of the logistics of such an event. Worshipful Master Patrick Barger coordinated the event with Jerad Reimers of the Cornhusker Council, Boy Scouts of America, and with Michelle Fulmer of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. Senior Warden Mark Clinton (with the assistance of W.B. Merv McDonough) led the charge to set up the massive amounts of equipment necessary to advertise and facilitate the event as well as take fingerprints, video, and a dental impression. Clinton also trained the lodge in how to operate each station.

All in all, numerous children are safer because of the efforts of the Brethren of Lancaster Lodge No. 54, the Nebraska Chip Foundation, and the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. Bravo!

MASONIC ALL-STAR MARCHING BAND MARCHES INTO

LANCASTER LODGE

Lancaster 54 hosted a supper for the Masonic All-Star Marching Band at the lodge on June 18. W.B. Bill Cummins, Event Coordinator,

did a fantastic job organizing the event as did Senior Steward Bob Nickell and his crew in cooking a meal for 300 people! The Brethren of the lodge turned out in force to serve each of the kids, support staff, and bus drivers. Many of the attendees took turns playing the lodge piano and entertained the crowd with their varied musical talents. People lined the entire dining room and outer hallway to enjoy the festivities.

The camp brings together over 250 of the best-of-the-best band students in Nebraska for five days of intense musical and marching practice. The band played at the Shrine Bowl banquet prior to joining us for dinner, lead the Shrine Bowl Parade Saturday morning down Havelock Avenue and was the feature half-time performance for the Shrine Bowl Game at Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.

Lancaster Lodge No. 54 sponsors multiple Masonic All-Star Marching Band scholarships each year and is proud and honored to sponsor this large-scale dinner for the youth of the Cornhusker State!

FELLOW CRAFT DEGREE CONFERRED BY TYLER

WHITE

Junior Warden Tyler White took his first stab at conferring the Fellow Craft Degree on July 25. The lodge had the pleasure of passing Brothers Greg Miller and Mark Bidrowski to the degree of a Fellow Craft Mason. These gentlemen were intrigued not only by what J.W. Tyler White had to say, but of W.B. David Jelinek’s imparting of wisdom concerning several arts and sciences as well. Lancaster Lodge looks forward to

mentoring these Brothers as they apply what they learned in the Fellow Craft degree and prepare for their next step toward light: the sublime degree of a Master Mason!

DEGREE TEAM TO NORTH BEND LODGE

Lancaster Lodge was invited to perform the Second Section of the Master Mason Degree for North Bend Lodge No. 119 on Sat., July 24. We are perhaps the only lodge with a travelling degree team that performs this important section in full costume. Your lodge offers its degree team service throughout the state and we never know who is going to request this special event. Rehearsal will be the night before on Fri., July 23 at the lodge with dinner provided. Dress casual.

The next morning we charter a Greyhound-type bus that will depart the lodge at 10:30 a.m. A sack lunch will be provided. We perform the degree at 1:00 p.m. and re-board the bus at 2:30 p.m. to depart for a local campground near the Platte River--a nice, beautiful, and secluded setting. Once there, Steward Bob Nickell will crank up his new mega-grill and serve up his world-famous burgers and bratwurst. Beverages will be provided. See you there!

NOTE: Another degree team excursion is being planned for Omadi Lodge No. 5 in South Sioux City. More information to follow as it becomes finalized.

Lincoln Valley Scottish RiteRiteCare Clinic Fundraiser

Jewelry Sales Fundraising EventSaturday, August 7, 20108:00 AM – 12:00 Noon

Lincoln Scottish Rite Masonic Center332 Centennial Mall South

We are accepting donations of any jewelry: new, vintage, costume, and old. You can leave your dona-tion at the Scottish Rite Office or call Bruce Wood at 435-2144 or Dyann Rupp at 450-7068 to arrange a time to have it picked up.

The Lincoln Scottish Rite Preservation Foundation is registered with the IRS as a 501 (c)(3) corporation and all donations to the Foundation are tax-deductible.

Perhaps one of the lesser known Masonic Charities comes out of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States. The Scottish Rite sponsors RiteCare clinics to help children with speech and language disorders. As the Lincoln Valley of the Scottish Rite is in the process of collecting jewelry for a jewelry fundraiser with the proceeds to benefit the Lincoln RiteCare clinic, I think an article on RiteCare is warranted.

HISTORY

In the early 1950s in Colorado, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of the Southern Jurisdiction of the United States initiated a program to help children with speech and language disorders. The results obtained from this program led to the establishment of RiteCare clinics to provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment of speech and language disorders, as well as learning disabilities.

Today, there are 178 RiteCare clinics, centers, and special programs operating or planned for children and therapists located throughout the United States. Each facility is staffed by speech-language pathologists or other trained personnel. Through the support of Scottish Rite members, these clinics, centers, and programs continue to increase. The value of this philanthropy has long been apparent. Tens of thousands of youngsters across the United States have been helped significantly. With the good work of dedicated clinicians and parents, the Scottish Rite has achieved successes that could only be imagined a few years back. Children who might have remained educationally behind for a lifetime can now talk, read, and lead productive lives.

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

As a rule, the RiteCare Clinics accept preschool children who have difficulty speaking or understanding the spoken word or school-age children who have difficulty learning to read. Some centers also offer literacy training for adults.

Inquiries on age groups and program offerings in specific areas should be addressed to the director of the local Scottish Rite facility.

Equally important, all services are available regardless of race, creed, or the family’s inability to pay.

RITECARE IN NEBRASkA

In Nebraska, as many as 12% of children, youth, and adults have disabilities which may affect their physical, mental, or social functioning. There are many challenges for persons with disabilities and their families, including the need for specialized programs and supports to help them achieve their full potential.

In Omaha, the RiteCare Speech and Language Disorders Clinic is part of the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and Rehabilitation at UNMC. In Lincoln, the clinic is housed in the Barkley Memorial Center on the East Campus on UNL while still under the Munroe-Meyer Institute of UNMC. There is also a clinic in Hastings and a part time clinician in Alliance. There are a variety of speech and language services providing diagnostic and rehabilitation services individually or in groups for children with language or literacy disorders. Parent and teacher training is also provided by Scottish Rite clinicians. RiteCare services include:

• P r e s c h o o l C h i l d r e n : group language for children age 2 to pre-kindergar ten

• I n d i v i d u a l T h e r a p y : One-on-one therapy for young children 2 years and older

•Speech and Language Screening: These screenings often help determine eligibility for services

• F e e d i n g / S w a l l o w i n g : Children with severe eating and swallowing difficulties are seen by a certified speech therapist as part of a Feeding and Swallowing Team, specializing in providing techniques to assist with these problems.

A PERSONAL INTEREST

As a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Lincoln, I had never been to the clinic here until recently. We had our third child, Ben, tested at the RiteCare clinic. He is nearly 3.5 years old and has less than a 10 word vocabulary. He’s been accepted so I will keep you informed of his progress. I’ve also met Dyann Rupp who is the full time clinician and organizing the fundraising event.

BuSINESS MEETING

June 3 was the date for our Business Meeting. Once again we were treated to fine food and fellowship. Petitions were read for John Burt, Dale Smith, and Walter Lane. The brethren voted on the re-instatement of Ed Stewart. The lodge was happy to complete degree work on Walter Oinokow and Sean Schulz. They were presented their bibles and other materials at the meeting. Liberty Lodge hopes all of our new brothers will return to lodge and help with degree work. Bro. Reggie Janssen made a suggestion that we establish a plaque listing those members of the Lodge who have served in the military. He will be heading up a committee to accomplish this. We went dark for the rest of June, other than our lodge picnic on the 26th. There were 13 members present, 7 wives, and 3 children. I hope the summer goes well for all brethren, and that we will be busy with degree work in September. Brethren should consider helping out with the concession stand this fall at Nebraska games. The season will be upon us before we know it!

SICkNESS / DISTRESS

W.B. Walt Baumann continues to improve after foot surgery. W.B. Brent Myers’ dad has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing tests. Bro. Bob Carroll has been diagnosed with brain cancer and would appreciate calls and visits by lodge members. Bro. Bob lives at 5322 Myrtle St. (06). His phone number is 466-1618.

LODGE DuES

A reminder that 2010 lodge dues are late. If you haven’t paid by now, expect a suspension letter. I hope all brethren consider the Masonic Home’s benefits before choosing not to pay their dues.

MEETING FOR BuSINESS

On June 1, our meeting opened in form, with prayer at 7:30 pm; W.M. Troy Tuhey was in the East, W.B. Eric Bachenburg in the West and W.B. George Wright was in the South.

CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY

We found that our Jordan Medal Holder, Bro. Jack Marlow, passed away on Mar. 29 in North Platte. Our sympathies and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of our Bro. Jack Marlow.

GOOD WISHES

Our good wishes are going out to Bro. Dan Kahler Sr., who was just released from the hospital after knee surgery; he will be returning for some routine buffing and polishing. And our good wishes go out to W.B. Richard Tuhey, father of our current W.M., who is home from the hospital, recuperating from complications from diabetes.

PAST MASTERS’ DINNER

Our W.B. Earl Robinette stepped up to the plate and got all the logistics together for the Past Masters’ Dinner, at which time the Jordan Medal will pass to its next recipient, our W.B. Otis “Bill” Cave. Of course, there will be a few 25-year and 50-year pins (not too many 100-year pins as of yet). As of press-time, this is slated for Aug 22, at 4 p.m. Keep your eyes on this space. All kinds of cool things will happen on this space, you know.

SHRINE BOWL BREAkFASt

A special thanks goes out to W.B. Earl Robinett and Bro. Paul Campbell for donation of food and time for the Lodge Shrine Bowl

Breakfast, June 14. Enjoyed by all!

NEWEST BROTHERS

Bro . Dylan Robine t t , grandson of our W.B. Earl Robinett, just became our newest M.M.

Bro. Andy Martin, grandson of our Bro. Jim Rousch, as of June 14 became an Entered Apprentice, with more to come by press-time. We would like to thank Cotner Lodge for putting on the EA and others for the good of the Masonic Community!

Guys, we’re holding your 50-year-pins in the file-drawer for whenever....Congratulations!

GEORGE WASHINGTON GOLF OPEN

Now, don’t get too excited; right now this is just in the planning stages by our golf masters Bro. Paul Campbell and W.B. Don Eisenbarth...As I said, keep watching this space, ‘cause this is a cool space to watch.

SECOND SATuRDAY FISH FRY

Every year, during nice weather, ever since God’s dog was a pup, people have flocked to one block north of 70th and Havelock, between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., for great fish, fried with the Secret Masonic Recipe batter--not to mention secret-recipe baked beans and potatoes and cole slaw and other good stuff, all for only $9, or $4 if you think you look under 12 years old. By my calendar, the next delectable date is July 10. As you read this, the Lodge’s sloop is throwing its net over the leeward side somewhere along the Alaskan coast. Ask the George and Martha Washington people about the sloop...

We would like to thank everyone for the support that keeps the fish coming after all these years. It is NOT something to miss . See you there!

SACk LuNCH AuCTION

Bethel No. 62 held a sack lunch auction for the members of Martha Washington Chapter No. 153, Order of the Eastern Star. Thanks again, to the members of Martha Washington Chapter No. 153 for their generosity. And thanks to Mark Poston, our Associate Bethel Guardian, for once again, being the auctioneer. The girls voted to donate half of the proceeds to the HIKE fund this year. Judging by the picture, it looks like Bro. John Kirby, W.P. can’t wait and is trying to sneak a peak to find out what his sack lunch might contain.

GRAND BETHEL

Five of our members attended the Sea of Adventure Grand Session in Grand Island June 16 through 19.

Fun Night was held on Wednesday, at the Hastings YMCA. We got to wear our new Bethel t-shirts for the occassion. The girls didn’t see them until we settled into our motel room in Grand Island. Thank you to my co-worker, Russell, for doing the tie dying. We received lots of compliments!

Four of the daughters took the knowledge test this year. Emily Nelson was entered in the 2nd Messenger individual competition. She was excited to find out that she recognized one of her judges, Gwen Hurst-Anderson. Emily was also selected

as Grand Bethel Representative to Idaho and Espirito Santo. We wish Emily the best during her year as a Grand Bethel Rep.

We had five girls reach the age of majority this year. Three of the girls received their majority certificates at this years Grand Session. They are Heather Anderson, April Legrand and Heidi Wall. Congratulations to these three girls. We appreciate their dedication to our Bethel this past year. April Legrand received the Lily of the Valley award this year as well as a Dad Walt Miller Award. Congratulations April!

The theme for this next year is Seeking the Treasure and plans are now underway for the Grand Visitation to be held Sat., July 24 with Bethel 60. We hope it will be a fun time for the new Grand Family.

A QuIET SuMMER This is a quiet summer at

Lincoln Lodge 19. We celebrated the 142nd Anniversary of our Lodge on June 29. We were chartered June 25, 1868, as Nebraska’s 19th Masonic Lodge and Lincoln’s first.

Our special guests included Most Worshipful Bro. John T. Parsons, Grand Master of Masons of Nebraska. We conducted a formal “receiving of the Grand Master” in our Lodge room before going to our dining room for dinner and the evening’s festivities.

Our speaker was Worshipful Bro. Tom Hauder, who spoke on the early Masonic Lodges of Nebraska.

CARDS

Several Brothers met May 25

at our Temple for an hour or so of card-playing. We thank Sec. Chuck Burk for bringing refreshments.

PROFICENCY PRACTICE

Some of our Officers

practiced three Tuesdays in June for Lodge Proficiency. Later this year we shall be examined and, we hope, keep our unbroken record of proficiency awards.

JuNE BuSINESS MEETING

W.B. Keith Brocksmith rounded up some fried chicken and trimmings for the Business Meeting Feast. W.B. John Kirby presented Masonic Education regarding the Grand Lodge of Nebraska after 1956. Some rather interesting information. Not a lot of other business to conduct, however the light bill must be paid and that was taken care of. W.M. Mark reminded the members of “Ladies at the Table” on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. The Lodge will furnish the meat course and the members will bring the accompanying dishes. W.M. Mark also announced a fellowship evening (stag night) at the Lodge at 7:00 p.m. on June 14. I’m sure some cards will appear and a few hands of pitch will be played.

DATING TIP

A guy walks into a bookstore, not looking for anything in particular. On his way to the back of the store, he spots something of interest: a book with a very interesting title, “Dating for the new Millennium, What Women Want.” So he picks up the book and opens it to a random page.

“Chapter 1: The First Date.”

He glances over the chapter and rushes out of the bookstore to call a girl whom he has wanted to ask out for quite a while. When he gets home, he picks up the phone and calls her. She answers, “Hello?” “Hi, Jessica. It’s Paul. Listen, I was wondering if you want to see a movie with me tonight.” She says, “Sure, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

He gets excited. He thought she’d say, “No way!” but she didn’t. So, he decided to take it one step further. He says, “Great! Well, how about dinner before that movie?” She replies, “Sure that would be great, too.” “Fine,” Paul says. “I’ll pick you up around 7:00. You should have finished eating by then.”

kNOWING WHAT TO SAY

When Sandy and Jack brought their new-born son to the pediatrician for his first checkup, the doctor said, “You have a very cute baby.” Smiling, Jack said, “I’ll bet you say that to all new parents.” “No,” the doctor replied, “just to those whose babies are really cute.” “So what do you say to the others?” asked Sandy. “I say, ‘He looks just like you’”, smiled the doctor. Until Next Month!
