Pa4: We can batten down and ride it out.

Batten: to fasten canvas over the hatches of a ship, especially in preparing for a storm. 用板条固定。

Ride it out: to stay afloat during a storm without too much damage; come safely through. 安全度过。

The two verbs are used as a metaphor, comparing the house in a hurricane to a ship fighting storm at sea. On the one hand, it shows that the Koshaks have confidence in confronting with the hurricane because they can make the necessary preparations . On the other hand, it is an implication that the Koshaks actually underestimate the fierce of Hurricane Camille though they have prepared very well.

Pa6: Gray clouds scudded in from the Gulf on the rising wind.

Scud: to run or move swiftly; glide or skim along easily. 疾行，飞驰；掠过。From this verb, we can feel that the clouds are mounted second by second, so the wind outside must be very strong and fierce, and the rain was coming soon, the potential danger was drawing near.

Pa7: Wind and rain now whipped the house.

Whip: to beat or urge on with a whip. 鞭打；用鞭驱策。Wind and rain liked a cruel person beating and hitting the house from all directions, and it seemed that the only protection way for the Koshaks was to stay in the house.

Pa11: the electrical systems had been killed by water.

Kill: to put out. As the increasing of water, the electrical systems didn’t work out. It not only made the situation worse, but also frustrated the Koshaks, making them feel hopeless.

Pa13: The house shuddered and shifted on its foundations.

Shudder: to shake because you are cold or frightened.（尤指由于恐惧，冷，厌恶等）颤抖，战栗。As the increasing force of the wind, the house became tottering, and its foundations are not solid as before.

Pa14: She clutched his arm and kept repeating ，“ I can’t swim, I can’t swim.”

Clutch: seize eagerly; grasp tightly. 急忙抓住，紧握。The mother was extremely frightened at the moment. She held Charlie Hill’s arm tightly as if it was her only hope to survive.

Stream in :(used about people or things) to move somewhere in a continuous flow. （尤指人或物）不停流动或涌。Ship ： to put, take, or send away (goods, passengers, sailors, ect) on board ship.( 货物 ) 装船，船运 ; ( 乘客，船员 ) 上船。

It brought the refugees necessary things as

well as confidence and hope to rebuild their

homeland.

Pa33: He pitched in with Seabees ---searching for bodies.Pitch in: to set to work vigorously. 着手大干。After Charlie Hill’s back had improved, he was desirable to join the Seabees. It shows Charlie Hill’s highly passion and determination to rebuild the community.
