Cantique de Jean Racine - translation
Word equal to the Very High one, our sole hope
Eternal of both the Earth and the Heavens
Of this peaceful night, we break the silence
Divine Saviour, cast your gaze down on us!
Spread on us the fire of your mighty grace
So all of Hell flees upon hearing your voice
Dissipate the sleep of a yearning soul
Which leads us to forget your laws!
Oh Christ, be favourable to this faithful people
Now gathered to bless you
Welcome the hymns they offer to your immortal glory
And may they come back fullfilled!
The service begins on p.119 of the Green Prayer Book

THANK YOU
to Jacqui Smith and to John Stewart who have led the parish in my absence. I have been visiting my family in London, spending time with my three grandsons, and also catching up with some friends. I managed to hear +Rowan Williams give a lecture on the future of faith and to meet fellow travellers Simon and Philippa Dickie for coffee in Islington. I also found two great clothing buys in an op shop!

LIVING WELL CENTRE: The next spirituality seminar will be Thursday 20th October. Our guest is Father Robert Whalley, a person
of many gifts and someone well acquainted with Thomas Merton. He will be looking at how Merton was one of the people of the 20th century who embodied grace and redemption in a world where the
news was so often bleak and without hope. Rob says of what he will share with us: "Off the top of my head I’d be inclined to talk about Merton’s disillusion with monastic life - and religious life
generally - in later life: “How do you live out a full-blooded spirituality in such a bloodless church?" I will speak about the
failings of the institution and the unknown future, but pointing to where Merton offers some hard
won hope in the end about living in a heartless world." Everyone is very welcome to share the day with us. We gather from
10am for a 10.30 start and conclude at 3pm.
