Br idge Markers f o r World War I

Two plaques e rec ted on the Cross S t r e e t Huron R i v e r Br idge stand as memorials to the men o f World War I .

On one are the words " I n honor o f our brave men o f the 107th F i e l d S i g n e l B a t t a l i o n , U . S . A : which b r igaded w i th the 32nd D i v i s i o n rendered d i s t i n g u i s h e d s e r v i c e at Chateau T h i e r r y , S o i s s o n s , Fismes, J u v i g n y and i n the Argonne and i n memory o f those who i n the cause o f humanity gave the l a s t f u l l measure o f d e v o t i o n . A r o s t e r o f the names o f these men and women i s p rese rved i n the A rch i ves o f the c i t y h e l l . E rec ted by the Y p s i l a n t i P a t r i o t i c S e r v i c e s League, 1919"

With Un i ted Sates ent rance i n t o World War I , the l o c a l Na t i ona l Guard S igna l Corps was expsnded i n t o a b a t t a l i o n o f two companies, the f i r s t being a r a d i o company and the second, a w i re company. Glen B. Arno ld was the Major o f the b a t t a l i o n and A l f r e d Hervey and Wi l l i am Berg in were Capta ins o f the r e s p e c t i v e companies.

On August 12, 1917, the corps l e f t Y p s i l a n t i to t r a i n at Camp G r a y l i n g . I t was t r s n a f e r e d i n September to Waco, Texas , and was s h o r t l y ass igned to the Depot Br igade o f the T h i r t y - s e c o n d D i v i s i o n .

RE-DEDICATION CROSS STREET BRIDGE MEMORIAL TABLETS

It's an Honor for me to be here today and have a par t i n tnxs Re -Ded ica t ion ceremony of these Memorial T a b l e t s .

Standing here today b r i n g s back many fond memories of t h i s bridge even though i t i s n e w t A n d o f these Memorial T a b l e t s .

As a young boy I crossed the b r i d g e and passed these Memorial T a b l e t s d a i l y o n my way to and from s c h o o l .

These Memorial T a b l e t s be ing Re-Dedicated today , were f i r s t ded ica ted o n Ju ly 4 t h , 1 9 1 9 , in Honor and Memory of the men and women that served t h e i r country so b r a v e l y in World war One.

A w a r to end a l l wars they s a i d , h i s t o r y t e L l s us i t wasn't to be.

Casualties numbered 38 m i l l i o n with 8.5 m i l l i o n dead, including 385*000 thousand American c a s u a l t i e s and 117,000 thousand Americans dead.

Tne City of Y p s i l a n t i wishes to acknowledge, and honor and pay t r i b u t e to the memory of these brave men women who in the cause of humanity gave the l a s t f u l l measure of d e v o t i o n , some s e a l i n g t h e i r devot ion with t h e i r l i v e s .

Did you ever wonder j u s t what the A rch i ves C o l l e c t i o n i n the Museum contains end why i t i s so important?

The c o l l e c t i o n has e long h i s t o r y , which r e a l l y s t a r t e d when the c i t wes p lann ing f o r i t s Cen tenn ie l i n 1923. Mrs. P . E . Sk inner end Mrs. P.R. C lea ry f u r n i s h e d me te r i a l from t h e i r scrapbooks, l e t t e r s snd p i c t u r e s . Miss F lo rence S h u l t e s , H i s t o r y P ro fesso r e t Michigan Sta t Normal C o l l e g e , helped to o rgan i ze the me te r i a l which wes g i ven to Mr. Harvey Co lburn to a s s i s t him i n w r i t i n g the S t o r y o f y p s i l a n t i .

L a t e r , Mr. Lou is S. U h i t e , an o f f i c e worker f o r the Michigan C e n t r a l R a i l r o a d , began h i s methodica l work on c o l l e c t i n g Y p s i l a n t i ma te r i e l Hie work and h i s c o l l e c t i o n s were recogn i zed by the Meyor, Mr. Rey B u r r e l l and the C i t y C o u n c i l who made him C i t y H i s t o r i a n i n 1935. He waa g i v e n the uae o f a room on the t h i r d f l o o r o f the C i t y H e l l to use f o r some o f the s t o r a g e .

December 21, 1959, Mr. U h i t e p e t i t i o n e d the C i t y C o u n c i l to e s t s b l i s ! s H i s t o r i c a l Committee end appo in t a H i s t o r i a n . Thkis the Counc i l d i snd mede Mr. U h i t e C i t y H i s t o r i a n to serve en i n d e f i n i t e p e r i o d . Through the e f f o r t s o f the Mayor, Mr. Rodney Hu tch inson , rooms on th second f l o o r o f the Mun ic ipe l Cour t B u i l d i n g were r e f u r b i s h e d and th H i s t o r i c a l ma te r i e l wes moved.

Marion Spear , a r e t i r e d l i b r a r i a n was h i r e d to o rgan i ze the H i s t o r i c m a t e r i a l s . Mrs. Ruth Shew, a c h a r t e r member o f the H i s t o r i c a l Commi tee a e s i s t e d Miss Spear and a l so c o n t r i b u t e d 12D0 D b i t u e r i e s f o r the B iography f i l e .

The H i s t o r i c a l S o c i e t y wes formed i n 1960 w i th F o s t e r F l e t c h e r es President. Plans were made by the H i s t o r i c s l Committee, and the S o c i e t y , f o r e Museum which would be s t a f f e d by members o f the Socie

I n 1965 the besement o f the P u b l i c L i b r e r y at 229 Uest Michigen Aven was renove ted through C i t y money, end the p h y s i c a l e f f o r t s o f U i l l i a Edmunds, Kenneth Le igh ton and Phoebe M i l l e r . Now i t wes poss i b l e to lock A r c h i v a l M a t e r i e l i n a room and a l so to heve a space f o r the d i a p l a y o f m a t e r i a l s ,

Mrs«Donald Disbrow wes h i r e d by the C i t y es the f i r s t A r c h i v i s t on s p e r t t ime basis. She was w e l l q u a l i f i e d as a research person snd a t y p i s t .

Lou is U h i t e d ied i n 1963 end l e f t e gap i n our h i s t o r i c a l ranks and a l a r g e c o l l e c t i o n o f h i s t o r i c a l ma te r i a l which i n c l u d e d 1631 f i l m s , an a u t o b i o g r a p h i c a l f i l e o f 30,000 names, meps o f the e ree , p lus much more va luab le m a t e r i a l . I n 1966 Fos te r L . F l e t c h e r uas appoint C i t y H i s t o r i a n and i t uae h i a duty to go on u i t h the p r e s e r v a t i o n o f the ma te r i a l c o l l e c t e d by Lou is W h i t e . Th i s i s the f i r s t time t ha t the'Museum has been wi thout a D i r e c t o r s ince i t ues moved i n t o t h i s b u i l d i n g , 220 North Huron S t r e e t i n 1970. Ann McCarthy has s b l y f i l l e d t h i s p o s i t i o n f o r ten y e a r s , du r ing uh ich time she a l so served the H i a t o r i c a l S o c i e t y as P r e s i d e n t . Her guidence and her h e l p ­f u l n e s s u i l l be miesed. Becauae the co lun tee re e t the Museum have had s p e c i a l i n fo rma t ion about a r t i f a c t s i n the Museum, they are nou to be c a l l e d Docents r a t h e r than Gu ides . Docents do more than merely guide v i s i t o r s through the Museu, they cen in form them ebout the a r t i f a c t s and can anauer ques t ions about them. Another t r a i n i n g aess ion f o r e l l Docents i s plenned f o r t h i s F e l l and neu v o l u n t e e r s u i l l be uelcome. Mrs. M a r j o r i e G a u n t l e t t i n t r oduced the D i r e c t o r o f the Ann Arbor Sueuki I n s t i t u t e uho exp la ined tha t method o f teech ing music to c h i l d r e n . A group o f p u p i l s then en te r t a i ned the guests who were f a s c i n a t e d u i t h the a b i l i t y o f the p l a y e r s , e s p e c i a l l y the smel l c h i l d r e n w i t h t h e i r smel l v i o l i n s .

The Lambie D ia r y w i l l not be i n the Gleen ings u n t i l e f t e r the f i r e t o f the y e e r . The g rea t g rea t granddaughter o f Wi l l iam Lambie hes completed 2 f u l l years o f the d i e r y and i s working on more. As I heve mentioned be fore enyone went ing a copy p lease l e t me know, there mould be a charge f o r them. I on l y have 2 more years more to go u i t h Wi l l i em Lambies. We have a copy o f L o t t i e F. Warner 's d i a r y and are going to use tha t f o r e w h i l e .
