PLO: Students will produce a graphic organizer displaying the subject and corresponding words for the diamante poem.

GPS: ELA3W1 The student demonstrates competency in the writing process. The student m. Prewrites to generate ideas, develops a rough draft, rereads to revise, and edits to correct.

Poetry

Diamante poem- a diamond shaped poem, centered around one specific topic. There are seven lines, and each line uses a group of nouns, adjectives, or action verbs.

Prewriting- During this stage students will brainstorm ideas on paper, that they may want to write about. Students will also come up with words that describe that specific topic, as well as synonyms and antonyms.

Record selected idea on graphic organizer.

Uses for this Web site: Students will examine a model of a diamante poem to better understand the shape and parts of speech used.

Practice Activityfor Pre-Writing

Before conducting the practice activity, teacher and students will review the parts of speech necessary for a diamante poem.

As a class, students will choose a topic. Raising their hands, students will describe the topic using action verbs, adjectives, nouns, and synonyms.

Assessment Activity

Students will complete their own graphic organizer. They will brainstorm their own ideas and write words that correlate to the subject.

During the drafting stage, we will use the ideas we generated in the prewriting stage to write our poem. Using the prewriting graphic organizer, students will choose the most descriptive words to go in the corresponding blank in the drafting graphic organizer.

Practice Activity

As a class, students will complete a diamante poem. While looking at the list of words from the prewriting activity, students will choose words that are most descriptive. Then, students will write these words in the corresponding blanks to form the class diamante poem.

Assessment Activity

Using the prewriting graphic organizer, students will independently complete their draft of the diamante poem.
