From enquiries made from parties at different points in the neighbour- hood , it was ascertained thnt hail was experi- enced over a strip about 6 miles in the N·S direct ion and about 4 miles in the E-W direc- t ion. The Meteorological Office was abo ut 2 miles to th e south of the cen tra l region . Th e maximum size of hail reported was ahout t" diameter in th e Met eorological Office at Poona and in th e Ce ntral Agricultu ral rological Ohservutory , about half a mile to tho north, the most predominant size Was a bout half inch in diameter, 2. Poena The mangoes dropped from the trees pa rt ly due to th e wind and partly due to th e direct hit of the hailstones. Those that were hi t hy the hail, hut d id not fall, started rott ing at th e place where they wer e hit and dropped a day or two later . Fig. led) illu strates such all effe ct on vegetables in th e Meteorological Office ga rde ns. The force of th e hail even split some of the mangoes. Nine soil and radiation th ermometers were hroken at the Centra lAgricultural Meteoro- logical Observatory. 3. Number of hailstones per square foot At the Central Agricultural Observatory , one of the research students, Raschke had set up an expe rim ent to study the effect of varying solar radiati on on plants by spreading thin aluminium sheets :14 S.W.G. over a square area, each of size abo ut 10 feet . Th ere were three such plots about 40 feet from each other. Every hailstone that fell made its mark on th e aluminium sheet as a dent. Th ere were 8 few which pierced t he sheet also. Fig. 2 shows a photograph of the impressions made on the sheets .
