We are well into the flow of the GCSE exams and the resilience being shown is a credit to the students.

As I write this, they have just completed a 2 ¼ hour English Literature exam having already undertaken maths, geography, physics and Spanish exams this week. These continue after half term for a further two weeks.

Across the rest of the school, students continue to engage themselves in various activities both as part of their studies, and also through extra-curricular activities. To read about such positive opportunities being undertaken across the school shows how committed and flexible our students are. Whether this is participation in the ProjectAbility tournament, STEM careers event, or the Accelerated Reader achievements, the pride of Hayle is once again on display.

Throughout the last couple of weeks we have been making new staffing appointments ready for the new academic year. I will welcome the new staff in future newsletters. We have also just purchased new ICT equipment for the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), display screens for numerous classrooms and a new traversing wall for the junior play area. These will all be installed throughout the rest of this term and over the summer holidays. All purchases have been based on feedback from student councils. The student voice is strong and influential.

Please enjoy this newsletter and have a good half term. Fingers crossed for the continued nice weather!

The Governing Body of Hayle Academy has a vacancy for a Parent Governor and is currently

The role of the Governing Body is:

• To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure money is well spent.

To be eligible you have to be a parent, carer, or have parental responsibility for a current student at Hayle Academy.

The closing date for nominations is 12 noon on Monday 17 June 2019.

To be eligible, you have to be a parent, carer, or have parental responsibility for a current student at Hayle Academy.

Governors are not expected to be experts in the field of education. The most important requirements are an interest in the school and the welfare and education of its students, and the time and willingness to get involved.

Newly-appointed Governors will receive induction training, and mentoring support from one of our more experienced Governors, and all Governors have access to on-going training opportunities to help develop their

knowledge and skills as a Governor. You will be the sort of person who can build relationships with people, work as part of a team, and have the confidence to ask questions and participate in discussion and decision-making.

You will have the time and commitment to take on what at times can be a challenging but always interesting workload, and attend a minimum of one meeting in each half term (normally held on Wednesday evenings between 5.30 and 7pm).

Does this sound like you? Or like someone you know?

Nomination forms and further information can be sent by email (please email [email protected]) and will also be available in paper format from

school reception in the first week back after half term.

BRONZE SUCCESSSix Year 10 students embarked

on their bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition last

weekend in glorious sunshine (if not a little chilly northerly wind). The group started bright and early at Sennen cove, walking north along one of the UK’s most spectacular coastlines.

The group made fantastic progress and completed a project about Cornwall’s unique Cornish landscape along the way. After a beautiful sunset over the Atlantic and a rather chilly camp, the girls continued their expedition on day two with some challenging navigation over the moorland of west Penwith, including a visit to the Neolithic site Mên-an-Tol.

On Sunday afternoon, the whole team completed their gruelling expedition in high spirits, all looking forward to a bath and an early night!

Mr Leech, the leader of Duke of Edinburgh, said, “These studentshave worked extremely well as a team and we are really proud of them as a school. I only hope they continue with the award scheme as they are ready-made to progress onto silver and beyond.”

LADYAfter over 30 years at Hayle Academy (Hayle Community School), Mrs Gutheridge will be leaving.

She has shown great commitment throughout her time here in serving our school community. I am sure the school has become very dear to her heart and she will leave with a great

many memories of staff, students, parents and Governors, past and present. She has been a key player in driving the school forward ensuring strong values and high aspirations. As a teacher of Maths, Head of Department and a Senior Leader of the school, her contribution has been invaluable.

Many students and staff are indebted to the support she has provided and the time she has dedicated over the years. She has seen hundreds of students grow and develop into confident, successful learners. Many ex-students remember being taught by her and are grateful for the care that she provided. Students have also enjoyed many events and trips organised by Mrs Gutheridge. Staff are grateful for the knowledge and experience she has shared.

The whole school community is extremely appreciative of her leadership and for making it the very special place it is today. She has contributed to making it a successful and safe environment in which students learn well and their good behaviour is noticed and commented on by everyone who visits the school.

The school wishes her well for the future.

Accelerated Reader Programme: This week we celebrate five One Million Word winners!

WHAT IS IT? The Accelerated Reader Programme is an online programme that encourages students to read more books. They choose a book, read it and once finished they take an online quiz to get immediate feedback, which provides the motivation to further progress their reading skills.

Regular feedback from Accelerated Reader helps teachers and librarians get the opportunity to praise students for successes and also discuss with them what they have been reading.

According to an independent study by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) and Durham University, Accelerated Reader produces “particularly positive effects” .

The Accelerating Reading Programme is very

active at Hayle Academy with all Year 7 and 8 students participating. I am pleased to say the following students have taken reading very seriously and received their certificates for reading over a million words since September.

Mr Martin awarded certificates and badges to the following students:

Josephine , Year 7- 1.105.509 words Amy, Year 8 - 1.710.261 wordsGemma , Year 8 - 1.875.203 words Daisy, Year 8 - 1.238.601 words Amy, Year 8 - 1.817.988 words

“The internet-based programme increased the reading age of pupils by three additional months in just

22 weeks. The effect on dis-advantaged pupils was even greater, with their

reading age improving by five additional months in the same

amount of time.”

1Back in March we launched the Prom passport which was in response to, and in consultation

with, our Year 11 student council sub-group. The Prom passports gave Year 11 students the opportunity to earn points for revision, attendance, class engagement and a multitude of other parameters in the lead up to the upcoming summer exams.

The more points they earned, the bigger the discount (up to £10) off their 2019 Prom ticket. The top 5 scorers would also receive a free copy of the Class of 2019 Year Book. The closing date was on 20th May by which time passports had to be handed in. Tickets will go on sale this week until 10th June. PROM PIXIES - Dresses available to hire for a £10 refundable deposit.

On Friday 17th May 2019, Mrs Penrose and I took 13 students from Hayle Academy (Year7-Year10) to the Projectability Games hosted by Mounts Bay

School. The sporting activities our students were expected to participate in were, boccia, curling, tennis, football, archery and hockey.

BOCCIA – This was a close call for Hayle with it coming down to a 3rd set, and Lauren stealing a win for the reds.

CURLING – Joshua and Charlie were made team leaders as Hayle played each other. Billy, Charlie and Joshua were all playing a very sneaky and tactical game in order to secure a win for their teams.

TENNIS – Tennis saw Callum and Lauren displaying some amazing rallies for Hayle.

FOOTBALL – Football proved to be the favourite of all the activities and proved to be the most exciting for all of our pupils. Shauna provided the entertainment, whilst Courtney and Kasey displayed some amazing tactical tackling throughout the match.

Aimee breezed down the pitch with superb foot work. Charlie set up Billy for a goal and he himself was so determined to score that he sustained an injury. However, this did not deter him; he persevered and scored.

Owen was a very courageous goal keeper having to defend many attempts of a shoot-out and potential goals from Ashlyn, Charlie and Billy. Lauren displayed superb team work and narrowly missed a goal herself.

HOCKEY – This was a brutal match for all students, especially Shauna and Chloe, who showed such brilliant skill and were very good at outwitting their opponents. In quite a spectacular way, both the girls were awesome to watch and Charlie scored his hat trick.

ARCHERY – There were six sensational pupils who achieved a gold in the archery: Chloe, Charlie, Lauren, Ashlyn, Jowan and Courtney. Well done everyone. Proud to be Hayle. REPORTS BY: MRS THOMAS-MCLEAN

PROJECTABILITY

On Friday 17th May, Dr Doris Fink, a STEM Ambassador, delivered a STEM careers workshop to all Year 10 students.

The interactive presentation focused on showing students how much of everyday life has links with STEM and how many career opportunities there are.

The students completed a STEM true or false quiz to address misconceptions. They then filled in an individual tick list of their own characteristics and personality traits to discover their preferred ways of working and their own personal aptitudes. Each student could then highlight the type of person

STEM: YEAR 10 CAREERS EVENT

they are and, therefore, which career paths would best suit them. A wide range of careers were discussed to highlight the multitude of opportunities that are open to them. Information was shared about different career paths and further education.

The session was extremely informative and thought provoking, sparking even greater interest in how STEM could provide future career opportunities.
