The Foundation’s TP Education Fund continues to have a significant impact in classrooms across campus as donated monies flow to areas of need and to support the new Pathway coursework in Business, Science, Engineering, Culinary Arts, and Video/Film- TV Production.
To date, the Foundation has used parent donations collected this year to purchase equipment and materials in support of the Business, Engineering, Culinary Arts and Ceramics classes and most recently, has purchased nearly $14,000 of equipment to outfit the Video/Film, Advanced Video/Film, and TV Production classes, as well as the TPtv and program. The cameras, lenses, tri-pods, sound equipment, light kits, green screen, plus much more should be in place at the start of the second semester.
“This equipment will have a dramatic impact on what our students are able to shoot, edit and produce in our classes,” states Derek Brunkhorst, TPHS video/
film teacher. “We look forward to exposing our students to this state of the art camera, sound and lighting technology right here on our own campus as part of our curriculum.”
In addition to providing cutting edge technology and learning materials for classrooms, the Foundation provides funding for programs which increase
student independence and develop leadership and social skills through PALS (Peer Assistance Leadership Support), FalconFest, mentoring programs, and the AVID college prep program.
If you would like to support the Foundation’s efforts, please go to the
website at torreypinesfoundation.org for information on the TP Education Fund and the programs and projects it supports or to make an online tax deductible donation.

QUALCOMM HOSTS TPHS STUDENTS TPHS Introduction to Business students got some real world corporate exposure when they visited Qualcomm, Inc. in Sorrento Valley in December to tour the campus. They had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in several different areas and learned about the history of the company, new projects in development, internship opportunities, as well as practical tips students can use now and while they prepare for college from Qualcomm president and TPHS parent, Derek Aberle.
Students then toured Qualcomm’s Thinkabit Lab, the museum, the Network Operations Center, and the Qualcomm Research Center where they learned about the Snapdragon mobile processor and the Halo Wireless Vehicle Electric Charging system.
Qualcomm President Derek Aberle offers a mo va onal talk
about overcoming the difficul es young adults face when
choosing a college and a career path.
Students meet with Saura, a TPHS alum, in the Thinkabit
Lab and learn about the Dragonboard which features
advanced processing power, Wi‐Fi, Bluetooth connec vity,
and GPS all on a board the size of a credit card.
Students get some hands‐on experience in the Thinkabit Lab
with Robocra s where they create, code and collaborate.
Students learn about the Halo system and new technol‐
ogy for ba eries and charging systems for electric cars.

FOUNDATION GEARS UP FOR GRAD NITE The 2017 TPHS Grad Nite celebration will be held at Dave and Busters in Mission Valley on Friday, June 16. The Foundation committee has been working hard to ensure a fun night is in store for our newest graduates.
Night-long activities will include an illusionist show, five hours of DJ entertainment and dancing. This year, Dave and Busters is introducing Silent Disco into the mix where graduates will don headphones and the silent atmosphere is instantly transformed into a high energy dance party wherever they go.
Each student will receive a loaded $50 Power Card for use on any redemption or prize games and will have unlimited access to all other video games. There will also be board games, Giant Jenga and more so that lines and boredom are not an issue.
Grads will also enjoy a buffet including a mac and cheese station, pizza bites, burgers, pretzel dogs, salads, fresh fruit and unlimited sodas and water. Mini cheesecakes, brownies and cookies will round out the dessert menu. To keep the grads going in the early hours, warm bagels, mini danish and muffins will be served before they head home.
Grad Nite runs from 11 PM on Friday and ends at 5 AM Saturday morning. Graduates will check in at the Torrey Pines High School gym beginning at 10 PM on Friday and will be bussed to Dave and Busters. Busses will return to TP at 5 AM Saturday.
Cost is $120 for registrations received by April 30 and the price goes up to $130 from May 1 to the deadline on June 1. Registration and payment will be on the Foundation website. More information will be coming shortly when the registration link is open.
Why Grad Nite? Studies have shown that post-graduation events like this save lives by providing a fun, cool and safe alternative to other celebrations.
High school graduation is statistically one of the most dangerous nights in young peoples’ lives. Attending a chaperoned all-night celebration keeps them safer than if they were out and about with their friends unsupervised.
We want ALL our TPHS grads to share in this special celebration. There will be food, games, music, entertainment, prizes and wonderful memories are made.
This is a chaperoned alcohol free and drug free event organized by the TPHS Foundation and is not part of the Senior Week Passport offered through ASB.
WE WILL NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS for this event. If you would like to help with check in or attend the event as an all-night chaperone, please email [email protected].

TP EDUCATION FUND APPRECIATION EVENT
The TPHS Foundation held the first Appreciation Event for Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Falcon TP Education Fund donors on Saturday, January 21 at the home of Mike and Ilene Lamb in Rancho Santa Fe.
Over 250 donors were invited to celebrate with staff, administration and fellow donors while dancing to music of a live Prince tribute band.
“We had a great fundraising drive this year and we enjoyed having the opportunity to show our appreci-ation to our top donors,” states Annie Johnson, event chair.
The TPHS Foundation has had much success with the launch of the new TP Education Fund campaign back in September. “We are so pleased with the response from the TPHS community this year,” states
Nicole Baril, TPHSF Executive Director. “While we haven’t quite reached our lofty fundraising goal for the year, we have raised a record amount and that was a reason to celebrate.”
Each attendee was entered into a drawing to win a VIP Graduation Package worth $5,000, donated by the Foundation. Package includes two VIP parking passes, seats for 10 on the field during the ceremony and a gift basket. Congratulations to Kim and Fred Howard who will have a student graduating in 2020 and were our lucky winners this year.
The TP Education fund is still accepting donations to help fund many programs on campus which benefit all students. For more information or to donate online, please visit the website at torreypinesfoudnation.org.
