TELLING TIME IN SPANISH

To tell time in Spanish, we use es or son.

Ejemplos:• Es la una. It is 1:00.• Son las dos. It is 2:00. • Son las diez. It is 10:00.• Son las tres y cinco. It is 3:05.• Son las cuatro y vienticinco. It is 4:25.• Son las seis menos diez. It is 5:50. (Six

minus ten)

AM OR PM?To indicate if it is am or pm, use the following phrases:

• de la mañana in the morning• de la tarde in the afternoon• de la noche in the evening/at night

Ejemplos:• Son las ocho de la mañana. It is 8 in the

morning.• Son las tres de la tarde. It is 3 in the

afternoon.• Son las nueve de la noche. It is 9 at night.

OTHER WAYS TO TELL TIMETo say it is noon or midnight:

• Es el mediodía. It is noon.• Es la medianoche. It is

midnight..

Other examples:• Son las seis y media. It is

6:30.• Son las diez y media. It is

10:30.• Son las dos y cuarto. It is

2:15.• Son las siete menos cuarto. It is

6:45.

TELLING TIME

To something is happening at a certain time, we use the phrases a la or a las.Ejemplos:

• La fiesta es a las ocho.• The party is at 8:00.

• La escuela termina a las dos y media.• School ends at 2:30.
