books in the 1901 opening day collection. Aposter is being commissioned. Children's events,such as a writing contest and a storybookcharacter parade, are being considered. Exhibitsand talks will be presented at each branchlibrary. The celebration is being supported bythe Friends for the Library, which budgeted$15,000-for Centennial activities.

The Centennial Committee (MeloneyBaty, JeffBantly, Kathy Barco, EileenLongsworth and Joe Sabatini) is trying toassemble library tools and memorabilia for apossible exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum.We are asking New Mexico librarians to look inyour closets and basements for obsoleteequipment, forms and supplies which couldillustrate the changes in the library "business"over time. Particularly desirable are a Brodartedge-notch circulation machine and a KodakRecordak camera unit. On May 1st, 1901, interested citizens ofAlbuquerque gathered at a former schoolbuilding on the corner ofRailroad Avenue andEdith Boulevard to celebrate the opening of thenew city-operated public library. They viewed acollection of 1,200 volumes of purchased anddonated books, primarily adult fiction. TheRaynolds Public Library was named in honor ofattorney Joshua Raynolds, who had donated theland and building to the City. From that modestbeginning, the Albuquerque/Bernalillo CountyLibrary System has grown to 18 agenciesserving 550,000 people.

Planning is underway on a yearlongcelebration of this historic event. During theNMLA Conference in April, there will be a galadinner with a major author/authors. The NewMexico Library Foundation's traveling exhibit,"One Book at a Time," will be shown in severalA/BCLS branches. At the Old Main Library,there will be a public ceremony on May 1st,officially opening an exhibit of many of the
