The Utrecht conference including the continuing education courses, special interest group meetings and preconference symposium took a full week. Being one of the organizers of the conference, I do not consider it appropriate to even try to give an impression of this week.

These proceedings are the scientific account of this conference, published and printed to inform those who were not able to attend and to keep record for those who wish to refer to what has been presented. Not included in these proceedings are the summaries of the continuing education courses that took place on Monday 22 June till Wednesday 24 June; nor an outline of the Editors' Workshop held on Monday 22 June, neither the results of the Special Interest Group discussions during that week. The appendix at the end of this publication contains a list of courses and group meetings in order to give special attention to these initiatives.
The many subjects of importance and interest to the members of the European Association for Health Information and Libraries (EAHIL) are reflected in the contributions in these proceedings. It was noted that the quality of the papers and the presentations had risen since the first conferences. This could be the signal to create permanent special interest groups, next to the pharmaceutical and veterinary groups, in order to discuss matters arising in the fields of academic medical librarianship, clinical lirarianship, database production, nursing and allied health, problem-based learning, and WHO documentation. Electronic mail and discussion lists could add substantially to the exchange of ideas and make international cooperation within the reach of many colleagues. The growth and health of EAHIL will allow for higher quality and further specialization in these and other professional activities.
Will there be EAHIL conferences and workshops after the 8th International Congress on Medical Librarianship in London in 20oo? Of course there will! Will there be conference proceedings published after these? Probably not, at least not fulltext in print. Scientific communication in many disciplines, also in medicine as well as in medical librarianship, makes extensively use of the Internet. Although the printed version is very handy as a reference tool, the speed of distribution will benefit from electronic alternatives and the problem of archiving can be dealt with by the association.
Information professionals make the difference, i.e. adding value to information services. EAHIL makes the difference and will continue to do so, i.e. adding value, quality and friendship, to the profession.
