What?

SETI is an institution that conducts scientific research on life in the universe

• seeks life by searching some signature of its technology (telescopes, satellite dishes)

From 1994-2004 SETI was funded solely by donations until 2005 when a NASA grant was awarded for work on signal detection for the Allen Telescope Array

Signal?

On August 15, 1977 while working on a project for SETI in Delaware, Ohio, Dr. Jerry R. Ehman detected a strong narrowband radio signal

The signal bore expected characteristic of non-terrestrial, non-Solar System origin

It lasted for a 72 second duration, but has not been detected again

Finding the location of the signal was difficult because telescope used two feeds to search for signals, each pointing to a slightly different direction in the sky following Earth's rotation

They eventually traced the signal to the region of the sky that displays the Sagittarius constellation
