It is suggested that, on Day 1 of the Smart Words cycle, students be tested to evaluate

whether the previous set of words has been mastered. To do this, prepare a cloze

activity from the Mastery Testing passages in this publication.

e.g. Testing mastery of Level G06 before introducing Level G07

Write the cloze passage for Level G06 on a board for the group to view.

Read the sentence aloud with the students.

It was dusty and windy for twenty days.

Delete one of the list words. Read again, orally inserting the deleted word.

It was _______ and windy for twenty days.

Delete a second list word. Read again, orally inserting the deleted words.

It was _______ and _________ for twenty days.

Eventually delete all the list words. Read again, orally inserting all the deleted words.

It was _________ and _________ for __________ days.

The students then write the complete sentence, inserting all the deleted words.

Check the work. If most students have spelt the list word correctly, proceed to the next

    set of list words.

At some other time, review, with those students who have made errors, the words that

    were spelt incorrectly.

If the majority of the students have not achieved success with the words tested, repeat

the whole set with the whole group of students.

  • H1 We went for a long march around the block to get some

    strong string for the party.

H2 Some other boys also went into their place to find some forks.

H3 Eleven and two is thirteen. Twelve and six is eighteen. Fourteen

    and three is seventeen.

H4 Our picnic was held up until the insect flew off.

H5 I dropped the hairbrush on the bathmat.

H6 I think we are free to have a picnic snack at the creek next

    week.

H7 It was such a grand match! The pitcher threw well. No-one

    could catch the batted balls.

H8 He had a ticket for the cricket in a packet in the pocket of his

    jacket.

H9 At midday we sat in the garden while the clay was cleaned off

    the white carpet.

H10 We had a feast of peaches and cream by the cool stream,

    away from the heat.

H11 In the moonlight, a spooky witch came from the south on her

    broomstick.

All H They were filming the insects in the gardens. Then they had to

  • I1 The storm came in from the north, stopping the sport, but giving

    the thirsty garden a drink.

I2 Our grade had to bake a cake made from dates. I hate dates!

I3 All her life the old wife had to cook inside on a fire stove.

I4 The tiny pony was so lazy the lady and her baby had to walk.

I5 Daddy and Mummy were sorry there was no jelly to carry out to

    the sunny deck.

I6 The ladies sat beside the lake with their babies behind them,

until it became too dark to see the ducks.

I7 The brass clip was too tight to open. I had to ask Dad to help.

I8 My uncle gave me a pie that was too hot to handle.

I9 I put the pudding full of apples on the high shelf of the oven to

    bake.

I10 He batted well. He dropped the bat as he stepped off the plate

    and started running.

I11 Last winter the driver came around the corner to see a tiger by

    the river!

I12 Father has never had a blister on his foot before.

All I His uncle was taking pies to the sports car drivers. The cars were

thundering by at a frightening rate, faster than ever before,

hoping to be the winning team.

  • 1 On my birthday we got dirty playing sport in the storm.

2 Our grade was told not to chase the snake near the flame.

3 When there was a fire outside, the queen stayed inside on her

    throne.

4 The pony was so lazy the lady and her tiny baby had to walk.

5 The daddy and mummy were sorry there was no jelly to carry out to

    the sunny deck.

6 The nannies feed berries to the babies while the ladies go to parties.

7 When the babies begin to teethe I put cream between their gums to

    soothe the pain.

8 I wear a giant mask with a magic brass clasp to stop the nasty

    germs.

9 I grumbled because my uncle gave me a pie that was too hot to

    handle.

10 He put the pudding into the bush because he was too full!

11 She adores her new pony, but now she has more chores than

    before.

12 Last winter my sister got a splinter under her big toe.

13 It is a pity that the city is so far from the river because I never get to

    go there.

14 The teacher told the driver to go around the corner to see the tiger

    eating a beaver.

  • J1 We will spoil the food if we boil it too long in the oil.

J2 Her coin has a hole in it. The day is warm.

J3 The crew took the coach through the rain shower to the coast

    tower.

J4 I hear that dear little Jan is nearly ten years old.

J5 Always take care of your eyes. Beware of the glare of the sun.

J6 They have gone back to live where they first lived until they had

    to leave!

J7 The mouse lived at the house for many more days before the

    horse came.

J8 The prince and princess danced in a circle on the shore in the

    warm sunlight.

J9 On a stormy, rainy day it is easy for the family to get dirty.

J10 Butter on crumpets is good for dinner in summer, but better for

    supper in winter.

J11 The girl had a little paddle in the puddle while she ate her apple.

J12 A rabbit and a sparrow lived in the paddock. The rabbit liked

    to eat carrot.

All J The fairies were pleased that the prince was coming to their

houses. The kettle was bubbling and the cheese was ready for

supper. There would be dancing and creamy pies to eat.

  • J1 Do not spoil the soil by putting oil on the bore.

J2 The stove is so warm it will boil the oil.

J3 The crew will chew the poached eggs on toasted grain bread

    after they have a shower.

J4 I fear that it will take nearly a year to rear the tiger.

J5 Do you dare to stare at the hare? Beware, and take care not to

    scare it when you glare.

J6 I love to leave grain for the dove who lives in an alcove above

    our cabin.

J7 The girl held on tightly as she bravely rode the horse safely

    away from the scary house.

J8 The princess has a fairly nice voice that we will hear when we

    go to the circus.

J9 The mouse made a lot of noise when it ate the creamy cheese

    next to the cider.

J10 The summer supper was better than scary dinner when a robber

broke the ladder on the gutter.

J11 The little boy was paddling in the middle of the puddle blowing

    bubbles from a bottle.

J12 The sparrow followed the parrot to the carrot paddock.

J13 They will urge the surfers to take turns on the curly waves so

    they don’t get hurt.

J14 Our team was pleased they got ribbons for coming first, second

    and third in the race.

  • K1 The palm trees do not sway on a calm day.

K2 Tomorrow we must do what we did not do today, and cannot

    do tonight.

K3 The bread was as heavy as lead, so we spread it with lots of jam

    instead of butter.

K4 We could not surf on Thursday because it was our turn to go to

    church.

K5 I was asleep alone in the house when the alarm went off. I was

awake quickly and turned it off. I’m afraid I went back to sleep.

K6 I wrote two letters to someone I know.

K7 We were numb as we sat in the castle and listened for the

ghost. You could hear a crumb drop.

K8 I climbed on a chair, rather than the stairs, to look through the

    window at the foal.

K9 I bought four pears. I brought them to school for morning tea.

K10 My friend said he was pretty busy building many doll’s houses.

K11 What do you want to watch, something about wasps or about

    the wattle tree?

K12 Both mother and son love honey.

K13 A large hedge grew along the edge of the ridge.

All K There was a ghost in the old castle. We were numb with fear

when we saw it on the stairs. No-one said anything. Our knees

were knocking before we raced away.

  • K1 The calf was under the palm tree for half an hour before she

joined the other calves in the paddock.

K2 The almond bread was as heavy as lead. That meant the head

cook had not read the cook book.

K3 The calm gnu followed the bear with a pear to the council sign

    that warned them of gnats.

K4 Honestly, I feel afraid that I am awake and alone at night. I like

to stay asleep and dream about calves.

K5 The knight knew to kneel on one knee and raise his knife to end

    the battle.

K6 The brave knight will scare the ghost away with his deadly

    sword.

K7 The plumber wrote a note telling us that he cut his thumb and

wrist. His limb felt numb so he left.

K8 When I go to the castle I often like to listen to the little lambs as

    they jostle in the paddocks.

K9 The fairy at the dairy made some soup for the foal that was as

    black as coal.

K10 I brought the sketch of the new hutch I thought you had bought

    for here.

K11 We watched the static electrical storm on the way to the picnic

and we thought that we should hasten home instead.

K12 Anyone who thinks everybody has everything they want is

    wrong.

K13 Everybody sat on the edge of the bridge and watched the

large barge nudge its way along the river.

K14 Tomorrow, everything that was wrecked in the storm yesterday

will be cleaned up by a large group of people.

  • L1 Life was tough for early man on earth.

L2 One evening in June we heard a tune we had learned at

    school.

L3 A monkey and several donkeys lived on the valley floor where

    barley grew.

L4 People buy new shoes because their old ones are not good

    enough.

L5 We use a litre of milk each day. One hundred centimetres is

    equal to one metre.

L6 Thirty days has September, April June and November. All the

rest have thirty one except February which has 28 or 29.

L7 Everyone saw the butterfly with all the colours of the rainbow on

    its wings.

L8 The hungry lions will roar until they are fed by the man in blue.

L9 We should not talk or laugh at a concert.

L10 There is a blossom tree and a kennel by the tennis court at the

    bottom of the garden.

L11 The worm’s work is to break up soil where it is damp in the

    world.

L12 Dinner was almost ready when we sat at the table for steak and

    carrots.

All L Everybody was hungry so our aunt cooked the meal. We sat at

the table talking and laughing with one another about eating

worms or litres of blue soup. We could hardly wait for tea to be

    ready.

  • M1 It indeed seemed like a sheer drop as we made good speed

    down the steep slopes.

M2 We had to check our time as the clock struck six o’clock.

M3 I’m glad the buckle on the jacket wasn’t breaking. We

wouldn’t have been able to get another until Thursday.

M4 To get a good finish on varnish you’ll have to polish it often.

M5 Any chance I can get a fourth sandwich to keep me going

    while I play chess?

M6 Suddenly, after the stormy day, the rocky slope gave way.

Luckily we were nearly at the bottom and we landed safely.

M7 I was skipping when I slipped. My knee needed rubbing.

M8 Switch on the light in the kitchen so we can fetch the

    sketch we drew.

M9 We had no shelter on our travels. It was good that we had a

blanket when we began to shiver.

M10 The trees formed a border around the orchard in order to keep

    the deer out.

M11 If a single beetle startled a rider, he or she might struggle to stay

    in the saddle.

M12 The knight was struck dumb when he answered the enemy’s

    whistle.

    All

The drover looked sleepily at his watch, stretched and crawled

out from his blanket. He whistled softly to his horse, slipped into

the saddle ready to travel the punishing rock track with the

    cattle.

  • M1 His peers cheered after the driver steered around the worried

    deer.

M2 I’m not sure what’s going on but they’ll tell us if we’ll wait.

M3 We weren’t going to cheer too loudly but couldn’t help it and it

    didn’t really matter.

M4 We’ve got to go to the park together. You’d never think they’d

get lost on the way but they could.

M5 It’s a shame he couldn’t finish the show after his dog broke the

leash and vanished into the snow.

M6 It’ll be really handy having my aunty to punish my cheeky dog

    if he suddenly splashes me.

M7 I rubbed the back of the horse while it trotted to the stable and

my sister skipped behind us begging for a turn.

M8 At eight o’clock the boy checked the unlucky duckling that

was struck by the falling bracket

M9 Our mother forced us to finish our dinner before we could finally

    order some shortbread.

M10 The writer wriggled as I wrestled him to give me an answer

about what happened to the wreckage.

M11 The pretty women have a knack for kneading the dough. They

carry it in knapsacks and sell it to the people.

M12 It was a struggle to find the single needle that fell in the hay

    and startled the beetle.

M13 He didn’t have a chance to catch his friend cheating in the

chess game as he was busy eating his sandwich.

N4 The crow had grown too large for the hollow in the tree.

N5 Take care to have some spare money in case the fare has

gone up. It would be awful not to get a ride.

of flour were left at the stall.

N7 The cakes for sale were on a plate in the shade made by the

N8 The girl made a huge stroke at the ball but did not quite hit it.

they have many choices for becoming steadily more wealthy.

piece of cloth which took them out to the country.

O11 During music class, I knocked my toe on the chair and it turned

purple. My tutor sent me to the school nurse.

O12 The satchel suits my needs better than a clutch purse as it will

hold more fruit for my lunch.
