The Carmel Mission Foundation was formed to fund the restoration and preservation of the historical properties and

artifacts of the Carmel Mission. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profi t pub-lic benefi t corporation, independent from any religious organization. Its tax ID number is 26-2981780. All contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

Vic Grabrian

From the President . . .This issue of the Cornerstone is dedicated to our wonder-ful donors, who so kindly supported the Foundation dur-ing the preceding year. Thank you for your overwhelming generosity.

Last year was a tremendous year for a couple of reasons. First, November 24, 2013 was the Tricentennial of Junípero Serra’s birth. During that month, several special events

took place, including the formal dedication of the Serra Memorial in the Mis-sion’s main courtyard, a Junípero Serra birthday reception and celebration, and a visit by Spanish royals. The other reason was that the $5.5 million Basilica restoration became a reality — completing Phase I of the Carmel Mission’s restoration.

As we continue with our challenge to restore the Carmel Mission, the same project team that just completed the Basil-ica restoration is now overseeing prepara-tion of a study to determine the scope, master plan, and cost of the next phase, which is expected to address the remain-ing historic structures and museums in the Carmel Mission complex. Funded by the Foundation, this study should be completed by the end of April.

At the beginning of this year, there were some board offi cer changes. Brian Call was appointed chairman of the board, succeeding Sam Wright, who will continue to serve as a director. Sam has devoted 8 years to the affairs of the Foundation starting with its inception through the Carmel Mission parish fi nance council, then as a founding offi cer and director and our immediate past president. Brian has been a member of the board since 2010 and served as corporate secretary. Concurrently, Paul Gutierrez, who joined the board last year, was appointed vice president and secretary.

K.C. Jones recently joined the Foundation offi ce staff. He is assuming the administrative duties previously held by Barbara Spagna, who moved out of the state last fall. Please join me in thanking Barbara for her excellent past service and in welcoming K.C. to the Foundation.

To our ever-expanding group of donors, members of our board, advisors, and volunteers who have so generously supported the Foundation this past year, we express our most grateful appreciation.

With warmest regards,

President and Chief Executive Offi cer

THANK YOU

Last year, all of the wall plaques on the Serra Memorial Wall were fi lled by generous donors to the Tricentennial campaign in support of the Basilica restoration. For future donors, the Foundation has recently added ground tiles within the circular area of the Serra Memorial surrounding the retired Ave Maria bell. Over 25 of these tiles have already been claimed.

Serra Memorial Circle TilesYou can add to your legacy, honor someone special, or remember loved ones with the gift of a permanent, custom-engraved tile in the Serra Memorial Circle. Your tax-deductible donation will support the critical restoration and preservation of the Carmel Mission complex, including its historic structures and artifacts.

Spain’s future King visits Carmel MissionIn November, Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe of Asturias, heir apparent to the Spanish throne, and his wife, Princess Letizia, visited the Carmel Mission to honor the 300th birthday of Spain’s native son and founder of the fi rst nine California missions, Junípero Serra. They were accompanied by the Spanish Ambassador to the U.S., the President of the Balearic Islands, which includes the island of Majorca where Serra was born, and other Spanish government dignitaries.

The Carmel Mission Foundation President, Vic Grabrian, briefed the royal couple on the history of the Carmel Mission and the recently completed seismic retrofi t and restoration of the Basilica. They then laid a wreath on the tomb of Junípero Serra to honor his life and, following a brief tour of the Convento Museum, joined 90 guests for an evening reception on the patio overlooking the Mission’s main courtyard. The lit exterior of the Basilica’s south bell tower, along with the beautiful bougainvillea, formed a resplendent backdrop for the evening’s royal event.

The visitors were most impressed and appreciative of the restored Basilica. The Spanish Ambassador applauded the care given this historical site and said they were very proud of our common past, thankful for the way in which we were treating it, and want to join with us in completing the remainder of the Mission’s restoration.

Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia lay wreath on Junípero Serra’s Grave.
