GUEST  SPEAKERS  ENRICH  MR.  PHILLIP’S  CLASSES  Throughout  the  school  year,  the  fiah  and  sixth  graders  in  Mr.  Phillip’s  social  studies  class  have  had  visitors  come  to  share  their  experiences  and  exper[se.  Earlier  in  the  year,  Cibele  Webb,  mother  of  three  Stanley  Clark  students,   came  to  speak  to  the  fiah  graders  about  growing  up  in  Brazil.  She  shared  many   different  aspects  of  culture  and  talked  about  modern  issues  that  face  Brazil  today.  This  helped  give  the  students  a  first  hand  experience  leading  into  a  unit  project  looking  at  modern  issues  in  La[n  America.

Fiah   graders   also   had   the   opportunity   to   hear   about   Mr.   Hunter’s  experiences.  Not  our  very  own  Mr.  Hunter,  but  his  father!  Mr.  Hunter  was  one  of   the  first  5,000   Peace  Corp  Volunteers  and  was  sta[oned  in  Sierra  Leone.  He  spoke  about  the  climate,  geography,  and  culture  he  experienced  while  in  Africa  and  told  an  interes[ng   story   about   ostrich   races.  His  visit  enhanced  the  students’  study  of  African  geography.

This  is  the  second  year   that  sixth  grade  students  have  par[cipated  in  the  NAIS  20/20  Challenge,  an  interna[onal  project.  This  project   looks  at  20  global  issues  that  need  to  be  solved  by  the  year  2020.  This  year  SCS  students  were  given  the  topic  of  Digital  Divide  and  paired  with  a  school  in  the  Philippines  called  the  Singapore  School  of  Cebu.  To  help  the   students  understand   the  concept   of   Digital  Divide,   SCS  parents  and  ND  professors  Elliot  Visconsi  and  Nitesh  Chawla  spent  [me  with

the  students.  Professor  Visconsi  spoke  to  the  importance  of  having  places  where  people  could  have  free  access  to  devices  that  are  capable  of  connec[ng  to  the  internet,  such  as  a  public  library.  Professor  Chawla  talked   about   the   importance   of   innova[on   and   how   vital   the   exponen[al   growth   that   results   from  innova[ve  products  and  services  can  be  to  economies  and  health  care.

going  to  be  nice,   so  I  did   it.   It   was   sort   of  soH."    Please  be  sure  to   check  out   the   last  Tiger   Tales   of   each  month   to   see   what  ac[vi[es   Extended  Day   has   planned   for  the   upcoming   half-‐day  Fridays.
