DESCRIPTION
Curated by Mónica Álvarez Careaga Forest is a topic of European culture. In the overall analysis of intellectual appropriation of nature that creates the idea of landscape, it occupies a very important position. Its symbolic complexity has been analysed as regarding the maternal and feminine. The forest is a place of abundance and darkness. It is a mysterious place where fantasy becomes reality. This exhibition “The Clearing in the Forest” brings together six artists living and working in Cantabria (Spain). Their work is dominated by formal interest and connects us with universal aspirations of significance.

他们是Miguel Ángel García、 Carmen Van den Eynde、 Antonio Mesones、Vicky Kylander、 Vicky Uslé 和Nacho Zubelzu。

y moderna.
tras fortalezas culturales y sociales.
Antonio Mesones, Vicky Kylander, Vicky Uslé y
For the second year running the Government of
Cantabria (spain) has made a commitment to
promoting the best plastic art created in our re-
gion internationally. Contributing to the interna-
tionalisation of our creators is an indispensable
aspiration for those of us who see Cantabria as a
creative, innovative and modern region.
An important art scene is one of our cultural and
social strengths. The exhibition i am presenting,
“el claro en el bosque” (The Clearing in the Forest)
portrays the beauty and power of nature as inter-
preted by six important artists with links to Can-
tabria by birth or residency. Miguel Ángel García,
Carmen Van den eynde, Antonio Mesones, Vicky
Kylander, Vicky Uslé and nacho Zubelzu have,
without doubt, had the chance to nurture their
talent through the inexhaustible inspiration of our
natural heritage.
Helped by the Cervantes institute in this interna-
tionalisation work, over the course of this year we
are pleased to be showcasing some of our most
thrilling art at the two big metropolises of Asia,
beijing and Tokyo, where the public will no doubt
appreciate this fabulous offering.

exterior. Reúne los trabajos de seis artistas: Miguel
Ángel García, Carmen Van den Eynde, Antonio Me-
sones, Vicky Kylander, Vicky Uslé y Nacho Zubelzu
2014. Estamos seguros de que estas nuevas rutas
hacía Oriente para nuestras creaciones culturales
traerán muy buenas nuevas.
The Cantabrian Government’s Ministry of educa-
tion, Culture and sport is implementing a series of
internationalisation initiatives aimed at promoting
the mobility of cultural production from our region.
To achieve this goal, last year we began a strategic
partnership with the Cervantes institute, yielding
some very positive results. The Claro en el bosque
(Forest Clearing) exhibition that we are presenting
on this occasion maintains this ambition to be
present internationally through the institution that
exports spanish culture abroad. it brings together
the work of six artists: Miguel Ángel García, Carmen
Van den eynde, Antonio Mesones, Vicky Kylander,
Vicky Uslé and nacho Zubelzu, who with their crea-
tive intelligence shed light on the relationship bet-
ween nature and the individual, on a tour that calls
in at the two big Asian capitals: beijing and Tokyo.
We would like to give our thanks to the prestigious
contemporary art fair, Art beijing, and the Cervan-
tes institute branches that will host the work of the
Cantabrian artists in 2014. We are confident that
these new routes to the east for our cultural crea-
tions will bring very glad tidings.

is contributing once again to the international dis-
semination of new spanish artists.
This project, bringing together the most recent
work of six artists with links to Cantabria by birth
or residency, begins its itinerancy in the context of
the Art beijing fair, before moving on to be exhibi-
ted this year at the Cervantes institutes in beijing
and Tokyo.
Mónica Álvarez Careaga leads this project under
the thought-provoking title of “el claro en el bos-

listic interpretation of the landscape as a meeting
place and a source of emotional creation.
in 2014 the Cervantes institute renews its partner-

Naturaleza y luz.

The concept of the forest is commonplace in eu-
ropean culture, like the garden or paradise. in the
overall analysis of the intellectual appropriation of
nature that creates the idea of landscape, it plays
a very important role.
its symbolic complexity has been analysed by eduar-
do Cirlot in relation to motherhood and femininity.
The forest is a place of abundance and of darkness.
Jung analyses it in relation to childhood fear of the
dangers of the unconscious, which appears in many
european narrative traditions. The forest is the oppo-
site to the safety of the home and the inhabited; it is
full of surprises and strange apparitions.
in contrast to the dark, close and mysterious fo-
rest, the idea of an illuminated area, a “clearing”,
represents the light we need when we go into the
unknown, to understand our position, to assess
the dangers. Light also enables rest and reflection.
Away from the city, away from obligations and so-
cial norms, it is a mysterious place of fantasy.
This is the idea of the forest clearing that i have
chosen as the theme for an exhibition of the work
of six artists linked, by birth or residency, with the
spanish region of Cantabria, whose characteristic
landscape is the Atlantic forest.
The work of these six artists is presided over by
formal interests, but it is imbued with universal as-
pirations of signification. Their pieces capture the
light of a typically artistic intelligence and seek to
express a personal relationship with nature. Full of
references to plant life, they appropriate the power
of contemplating nature.
nature is present in the leaves developed by the
whirlwinds of nacho Zubelzu, in the clutter of tree
tops of Miguel Ángel García, in the symmetrical
patterns of Vicky Kylander, in the cartographic
forms of Vicky Uslé, in the abstract blooms of An-
tonio Mesones, in the idealised still lifes of Carmen
Van den eynde. nature and light.

MIGUEL ÁNGEL GARCÍA 11

sociales. La caída del muro de Berlín en 1989
vuelve a la memoria del artista. Los graznidos
retumban como las reivindicaciones insatis-

García evita voluntariamente la mirada de-
tallada sobre los animales, buscando una
foto crepuscular, desolada, amenazante,

desolate, threatening photo of the branches

Antonio Mesones

Antonio Mesones’ pictorial forms are cons-
tructed using a process similar to a bloom.
The emergence of new petals added to the
previous ones in successive rows creates
powerful abstract images using the traditio-
nal pictorial resources of glaze, colour and
brushwork.
Mesones places time on the flat surface of
the canvas though the repetition of a chro-
matic gesture, investigating this constituent
material of life in a mysterious fashion.

Vicky Uslé

Nacho Zubelzu

za, simplificada, reducida a su esencia for-

nacho Zubelzu displays a dual capacity as
artist and naturalist that has defined his in-
terest in animal species, the landscape and
permaculture.
A gifted illustrator, Zubelzu is also an artist
of two sides: part of his work is populated
by lines and scratches that suggest hair,
grass or straw, and the other part consists
of waves, flowers and hearts. This simplified
approach to nature, reduced to its formal
and chromatic essence, culminates in his
piece “Trashumancias” (Migrations), 2013.
it is a series of collages of small pieces of
paper cut and pasted onto canvas, evoking
both the waves depicted by the movements
of animal herds on their seasonal move-
ments in search of pastures and the relief of
the landscape itself, covered in white snow.
