1.1.3-1 1.1.3-1Circuit Fault Diagnosis
Diagnostic ProcedureRefer to the following procedure for the circuitfault diagnosis:
1. Confirm Fault
To do the proper repair, confirm the faultsymptoms described by the customer firstly.Inspect the relevant component carefully toconfirm the fault symptoms and make record.DO NOT disassemble the component beforeconfirmation of the fault scope and causes.
2. Read Wiring Diagram and Analyze Causes
Make a complete analysis and judgement onthe fault components from power supply togrounding according to the sub-system wiringdiagram and determine the repair solution. Ifit cannot be determined, please read thesystem description in the “Description andOperation” section in the repair manual tounderstand the working principle. And inspectother circuits that has common part with thefault circuit, for example, the fuse, grounding, switch, etc. Inspect the circuit not covered instep 1. If other components in the commoncircuit work properly, it means the fault existsin its own circuit. Otherwise, the fuse orgrounding may have faults.
3. Inspect Circuits and Components
Always use the wiring diagram together withrepair manual and refer to the diagnosticprocedure for the relevant circuits orcomponents in the repair manual. For thecircuit with a control module, fully usediagnostic tools to do the test. Effectivediagnosis should be a logical and reasonableoperation. Fully use the diagnosticprocedures in the repair manual and start theinspection from the causes with mostpossibility and the components with easiestinspection way.
4. Repair Fault
Repair the fault. Refer to the wiring diagramand the description for fault treatment inrepair manual. For example, the diagnosticprocedure for poor grounding and the wiringharness connector treatment.
5. Confirm Circuit Working Condition
After repair, all functions should be reinspectedto confirm the fault repaired. For the fuse blownfault, Inspect all the relevant circuits using thisfuse.
Diagnostic Tools1. Voltmeter and Test Lamp
Use test lamp or voltmeter to inspect thecircuit status. Test lamp comprises a pair ofwiring harnesses and a 12 V bulb. Wheninspecting, connect one wiring harness to theground and the other one to the certainmeasurement point. If the bulb is lit, it meansthe measurement point has power supply.
Warning: DO NOT use test lamp to inspectthe control module voltage. Otherwise itcould damage the interior circuit insidethe control module. Please use a voltmeterwith 10 MΩ or higher internal resistance(for example, to test the ECM voltage).
Voltmeter has the same connection methodas the test lamp, but voltmeter can display thevoltage value of the circuit. Use a voltmeterwith high resistance to test the voltage. If thecircuit has poor connection, the voltmetermay show the normal value, but the voltagecannot drive the load successfully.

2. Self-powered Test Lamp and Ohmmeter
Use test lamp with own 12 V power supply orohmmeter to inspect the circuit for continuity.Test lamp comprises a bulb, battery and a pairof wiring harnesses. The bulb will be lit whenthe two wiring harnesses are connected. Before testing, disconnect the negativebattery cable and pull out the fuse of thecircuit. To test the circuit for continuity, connect two wiring harnesses to the twomeasurement points. If the bulb is lit, it meansthe circuit is normal.
Warning: DO NOT use self-powered testlamp to inspect the control module.Otherwise, it could damage the interiorcircuit inside the control module. Pleaseuse a ohmmeter with 10 MΩ or higherinternal resistance.
Ohmmeter has the same usage method asvoltmeter, but ohmmeter can show theresistance value. The lower resistance, thebetter continuity.
3. Jumper Wire with Fuse
Use jumper wire to test a broken point foropen loop circuit (circuit open). The jumperwire is a tool that should be in tandem withthe circuit.
Warning: To protect the circuit to beinspected, DO NOT use the fuse higherthan the rated capacity of circuit toinspect relevant circuits. DO NOT use thejumper wire as the input or output signalwhen a control module such as ECM orTCM is in the circuit. Otherwise it coulddamage the circuit interior inside thecontrol module.
Fault Testing1. Voltage Testing
Voltage testing is to test the voltage at acertain point. When testing a certainconnector terminal, insert the positive probeinto the wiring harness from the connectorback without assembling wiring harnessconnector.

1 When testing the voltage with test lampor voltmeter, connect the negative oftesting tools to battery negative.
2 Connect the other wiring harness of thetest lamp or the positive probe of thevoltmeter to the test position.
3 If a voltmeter is used and voltage displaylower 1 V above compared to the ratedvalue, it means a circuit fault. It means acircuit fault if a test lamp is used and lampis not lit.
2. Power Testing
1 Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2 Connect one wiring harness of the self-powered test lamp or the probe of theohmmeter to the test component. If usingohmmeter, please connect the twoprobes each other and use reset buttonto adjust the ohmmeter to zero.
3 Connect the other wiring harness of thetest lamp or probe of the ohmmeter to theother side of the test load.
4 If the bulb is lit, it means the circuit isnormal. If an ohmmeter is used and theresistance value is very low or close to 0Ω, it means the component has goodcontinuity.
3. Short Circuit Testing
1 Disconnect negative battery cable.
2 Connect one wiring harness of the self-powered test lamp or one probe of theohmmeter to the output terminal of thefuse.
3 Connect the other wiring harness of thetest lamp or other probe of the ohmmeterto the grounding.
4 Disconnect all the electrical loads to thefuse.
CAUTION: If not disconnecting all the electrical loads to the fuse, when testing the low resistance circuit like lights, the ohmmeter will always display the low value. This will cause wrong judgement.
5 Do the careful inspection from the placeclosest to the fuse.
6 If the bulb is lit or ohmmeter has valuedisplay less than 5 Ω, it means the shortcircuit to the ground.

4. Voltage Drop Testing
This is a test to inspect the voltage drop alongthe wiring harness, connector or switch.
1 Connect the positive probe of thevoltmeter to one end of the circuit close tothe battery (connector or switch side).
2 Connect the negative probe to the otherend of the circuit (the other side ofconnector or switch).
3 Switch on or off to make the circuit work.
4 The voltmeter will display the voltagedifference between the two test points.
5 If the voltage difference is more than 0.1V (less than 50 mV for 5 V voltagecircuit), it means a circuit fault. Inspect forloose, oxidized or corrosive circuit.
