Starting Victoza
Titrating Victoza & Starting Dose:
3
▪ Sensitive patients:
- Start and stay at 0.6mg (monitor for weight loss)
- Titration is based off of how much you lose & symptoms
▪ Normal patients:
- Start with 0.6mg x7 days then increase to 1.2mg per day (injection)
- Titration is based off of how much you lose
- Do not exceed 3.0mg (special consideration for Saxenda)
Symptoms to watch out for
Symptoms during your titration:
4
▪ Symptoms you may be getting “too much”
- Extreme nausea or vomiting, some nausea is okay
▪ When to stop your titration:
- Any symptoms that reduce quality of life (vomiting, etc.)
▪ Symptoms don’t necessarily mean you need to stop titration, instead slow it down or back down on your dose
▪ Increase dose ONLY when you hit a weight loss plateau
▪ Continue using Victoza or other GLP-1 agonists for 3-4 months AFTER you reach target weight
Lab tests & how to tell if it’s working
Labs:
5
▪ Check insulin & leptin during therapy▪ Leptin may spike even if you lose weight and this is okay▪ Monitor thyroid function during weight loss (you may need
less thyroid hormone over time)
Price Ways to get Victoza cheaper:
6
▪ Victoza is expensive & Insurance doesn’t like to cover it
▪ Call insurance and ask which GLP-1 agonist they like (or symlin) -> use that one
▪ Try coupon codes online (google victoza coupon code) -> works for some people making it $25 per month
▪ Use covermymeds.com (prior authorization)
▪ Consider purchasing from Canadian pharmacy with prescription
▪ Consider other medications temporarily: rx for metformin + glipizide usually works
Victoza + Other medications
Using Victoza with other medications:
7
▪ For best results should be used with thyroid hormone (T3 or NDT)
