Gheranda Samhita

⇒ Gherand - Samhita is a literature written on practical yoga.

⇒ This treatise is a conversation between Maharshi Gheranda and Raja

Chandkapali.

⇒ Maharshi Gheranda must have been a Vaishnava saint. Because Lord

Vishnu is mentioned in his mantras.

⇒ It is inferred from copies of the Gheranda Samhita that this is a 17th-

century treatise. Its first copy was found in 1804.

⇒ The yoga teachings in Gheranda Samhita is known as Shaptang Yoga.

⇒ King Chandkapali addressed Maharshi Gheranda as Yogeshwar and

asked for a solution to achieve philosophy of knowledge.

⇒ Maharishi Gheranda describes Ghathasta Yoga. Ghat means pitcher,

Maharishi Gherand has called the body as Ghat.

⇒ Maharshi Gheranda has described everyone can do yoga.

⇒ Maharshi Gheranda says Raja Chandkapali while telling him path of

yoga.

Nasti Mayasam Papam Nasti Yogatparam Balam.

Nasti Gyanaatparo Bandhurnahankaratparo Ripuh. (1.4)

There is no sin in the world like Maya and no force (Shakti) in the

world like Yoga. There is no another friend as knowledge and there is

no enemy as ego.

⇒ In Gheranda Samhita, Maya has been called sin, yoga is the ultimate

force, knowledge is friend and ego is enemy.

Sukraitardushkritah Kayejayeete Praninam Ghat

Ghatadutpadyate Karma Ghatiyantram i.e. Bhramate. (1.6)

The bodies of soul evolve from sukrit (good) and dusukrit (bad)

karmas. The body is produced by karma and karma from the body.

Aamkumbha Evambhastho Jeerayamaanah Sada Ghatah.

Yoganalen Sandhm Ghatshuddhim Samacharet. (1.8)

If the raw clay pitcher is filled with water, it will be destroyed by

melting. But if the ghata (body) is strengthened (by yoga fire) and filled

with water, it will neither be melted nor be destroyed.

⇒ This body can mature only through yoga. Therefore, yoga exercises are

necessary to make the body mature and strong.

Sapta Sadhan

Shodhanam Dridhata Chaiv Sthariya Dharaya Ch Laghavam.

Pratayakshm Ch Nirliptam Ch Ghatsya Saptasadhanam (1.9)

These are the seven sadhan (tools) for purification of the body –

Shodhanam, Dridhata, Sthariyam, Dharayam, Laghavam,Pratayasham

and Nirliptam.

1. Shodhanam – Refinement – purification of body and mind.

2. Dridhata – Strength - Physical, mental, reflective and emotional

perseverance.

3. Sthariyam – Stability – physical stability, mental stability.

4. Dharayam – Patience – Patience, endurance of the mind

5. Laghavam – Lightness - physical lightness.

6. Pratayaksham – Receptivity – subtle and internal experience

7. Nirliptam – The dormant state of mind.

Shatkarmana Shodhanam Ch Aasanen Bhavedaddham.

Mudraya Sthirtha Chav Pratyaharen Dheerata. (1.10)

Pranayamallagavam Ch Dhyanatapratyakhatmanah.

Samadhina Nirliptcham Ch Muktirev Na Sanshayah (1.11)

⇒ Shatkarma – Shodhanam

⇒ Aasana (Posture) - firmness

Page 6: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

3

⇒ Mudra (Pose) - stability

⇒ Pratyahar (Withdrawal) - Patience

⇒ Pranayama – Lightness

⇒ Dhyana (Meditation) - Affirmative, Self Realization

⇒ Samadhi (Meditation) – Emptiness

Shatkarma

The Shatkarma harmonize between the two main prana flows,

Eda and Pingla, which leads to physical and mental purification and

equilibrium. They also balance Tridoshas, Vata-Pitta and Kapha

produced in the body.

Dhautirvastistatha Neti Loliki Tratakam and.

Kapalabhatishchetani Shatkarmani Samacharet. (1.12)

The conduct of these Shatkarma:-Dhoti, Vasti, Neti, Lauliki (nauli),

Trataka and Kapalabhati is essential for a yogi.

Dhauti (Cleaning of stomach or digestive tract)

Antadhauti Rdantdhautirhardvautirmool Shodhanam

Dhotim Chaturvidhayam Kritva Ghatam Kurvanti Nirmalam. (1.13)

Dhautikarma has been considered to be of four types with the

distinction of Antadhauti, Danta Dhauti, Hrid Dhauti and Moolshodhan.

Through this, yogis make their body clean (healthy).

Explanation – Meaning of Antadhauti – Internal cleaning, the use of three

things in Antadhauti – air, water and cloth.

⇒ Dantadhauti ‘s mean has been taken to mean here – the cleanliness of

the apex area.

⇒ The meaning of Hriday Dhauti – cleaning of the heart area (stomach,

Page 7: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

food pipe etc.).

⇒ Moolshodhan – cleaning of the root part of the body, cleaning of the

anus, large intestine, urinary tubes, etc.

Result – all these actions make the body pure.

Antadhauti:-

Vatasaram Varisaram Vahanisaran Bahishkritam.

Ghatsya Nirmalarpaye Hrantadhottachtu Rvidha. (1.14)

There are also four distinctions of the Antadhauti.

1. Vatasar

2. Varisar

3. Vahnisar (Agnisar)

4. Bahishkrit

⇒ These four are done to cleanse the body.

A) Vatasar Antadhauti

Kakachanchuvadasyan Pibedvayun Shanaiyah Shanaiyah.

Chalayedudram Poshchadavatmna Recheyachhneyah (1.15)

Meaning – Shrinking both lips like a crow’s beak (like Kaki mudra), gradually

fill the air in the stomach. When drunk completely, operate in the

stomach (rotate the air in the stomach) and then remove that air (from

the mouth).

Benefit:-

Vatasaram Param Gopyam Deh Nirmalakarakam.

Sarva Rogakshayakaran, Dehanalvivardhakam (1.16)

Vatasar is a very secret action. It brings cleanness to the body. It destroys

all diseases and intensifies gastritis.

Caution – This activity should be done on an empty stomach and it can be

practiced daily. 2 to 5 times.

Page 8: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

5

B) Varisar Antadhauti

‘Vari’ means water, ‘Sar’ means element (essence), dhoti means wash, that

is, wash element with water.

This action is also known as ‘Kaya Kalpa’.

Aakantham Puryedavari Vakatren Ch Vibechchhanaiyah

Chalayedudrenaiv...... Chodararadrechayadadhah... (1.17)

Varisaram Param Gopyam Dehnirmal Kaarkam

Sadhayetprayatnen Devadeham Prapghate. (1.18)

Meaning: Drink water slowly; fill the food pipe with water up to the vocal

cords. After that, the water has to be removed from the downstream

by running the abdomen. This Varisar Antadhauti is the ultimate

secretive and cleanser of the body. The yogi, who tries this, gets the

same body as the deities.

⇒ Ιt is also called shank prakshalan.

⇒ Drink so much water that there is no desire to vomit.

Preparation

⇒ On the eve of practice one should eat light food. Like fruits or khichdi

etc.

⇒ Do not practice aasanas in the morning on the day of Varisar Dhauti

and remain empty stomach.

⇒ Light, loose and convenient clothes should be used while performing

the action.

Method of water preparation

⇒ Make lukewarm water by adding cold water to hot water. The water

should be as much hot as you can drink easily.

⇒ Add as much salt to make the water salty, but not too salty.

⇒ If there is waste in the water, then filter the water with a thin clean

cloth.

Page 9: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

Gherand - Samhita www.vedamrita.com

6

Location and environment – The best place for the Varisar Dhauti is the

courtyard or verandah, so that you can get pure air. You have to take

care of the proximity of the toilet at the time of location selection.

Method – At first, drink the two glasses of lukewarm-salty water quickly and

without stopping. If you drink intermittently, this action will not be

done properly.

⇒ After that, to whirl the water in the abdomen, do the five aasanas

described below in a rapid motion, which causes the water to come

down from the stomach. These are the five postures. Each aasana

should be performed eight times.

1. Tadasana

2. Oblique Tadasana

3. Katichakrasana

4. Oblique Bhujangasana

5. Udarakarshan (Abdomen Stretch Pose)

⇒ After this, drink two glasses of water again; go for defecation after

drinking a total of six glasses of water.

⇒ After this drink two glasses of water and do aasanas and then go to

defecation.

⇒ Do not wait more than two minutes for defecation. If the excreta does

not come out, don’t force it.” You have to come to the toilet again by

drinking two glasses of water again.

⇒ If pressure is still not created then don’t stop. Then you have to come

and drink water and do postures again.

⇒ You should drink water and do aasanas until clean water comes out.

⇒ First, simple excreta will come out, then thin stool will come out. After

that yellow water will come out. One who removes the Pitta (bile),

with yellow water, particles of feces will be remove which are hidden

here and there.

Page 10: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

Gherand - Samhita www.vedamrita.com

7

⇒ During this process, you will see peels of many colored stools. Black,

brown, pink, red. It depends on your food.

⇒ Clean water comes out after drinking about 16-20 glasses of water,

then the action should be stopped.

⇒ You should drink up to 20 glasses of water, then stop drinking it.

Aasanas and their peculiarities of the shank prakshalna – The aasanas

should be done sequentially as described below, because each aasana

extends the small intestine, extends its walls and pushes the feces in it

towards the lower side.

1. First posture – Tadasana.

When we practice Tadasana, our food pipe, stomach and

intestines expand. These protrude the valve of the muscle between

the stomach and the esophagus, which is called the pyloric valve. When

it opens, the water passes through it and reaches the small intestine.

Therefore, when practicing Tadasana, the layers of muscles open slowly

and water enters there.

Aasana Method -

⇒ Stand straight, leaving a distance of 10 cm between your feet.

⇒ Make the body stable by putting the weight of the body equally on

both the legs.

⇒ Tuck the arms on top of the head by intertwining the fingers. The palms

remain upward.

⇒ Stabilize the vision at one place and lift the heels and put the entire

weight of body on the toes and fingers.

⇒ Stay in this state for a while, then come down.

Breathing – Do inhale while lifting the body up.

Stop breathing after raising the hands and body.

⇒ Exhale while bringing the body down.

Page 11: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

Gherand - Samhita www.vedamrita.com

8

2. Second Practice – Oblique Tadasana

In oblique Tadasana, we tilt our body to the left. Due to which the

expansion of one side of the body and the other side contracts.

⇒ When the body bends on one side, then the layers of sputum on that

side spread and the layers on the other side become compressed.

⇒ In this way, the layers of the intestines are alternately spread and

contracted with water to penetrate from one to the other, second to

third, and remove the rotten food particles within the layers. Removes

the dry stool.

Aasana method: - Stand up keeping both the feets about two and a half feet

away from each other.

⇒ Come to the state of Tadasana, the heels will remain on the ground.

From the waist up, bend the body to the right, then bend to the left.

3. Third practice: - Kati Chakrasana

Kati means waist and chakra means circle or rotation.

⇒ In this posture, the body is rotated from near the waist.

Aasana method: - Stand up having a distance of two to three feet between

the feets. Spread out the arms at shoulder height.

⇒ First, the body is folded to the right near the upper part of the waist. In

which the left hand is on the right shoulder from the front and the

right hand is wrapped around the back of the torso. Look back from

the left shoulder. Then from the opposite side.

⇒ During the whole exercise, the arms and the back remain relaxed as

possible. This causes complete movement of the body, the body twists

completely. The stomach and muscles squeeze when twisted. Due to

this squeeze, water and pressure are mixed together and a push.

4. Fourth Practice: (Oblique Bhujangasana)

There is also a squeeze of the stomach and intestines, and the septum

between the small intestine and the large intestine, which is called the

Page 12: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

Gherand - Samhita www.vedamrita.com

9

ileocecal valve, opens so that water can enter the large intestine.

Aasana method: - In the case of Bhujangasana, bend your back slightly to

the right. Now fold the head and look at the left heel from the top of

the right shoulder to the back.

⇒ In the final state, the arms should remain completely straight and try

to bend the head and back without any force.

Breathing: - Inhale air while raising the body. Stop breathing in the final

state. Exhale, bringing the body back to the ground.

5. Fifth Practice: - Udarakarshan

‘Udara’ means stomach and ‘Aakarshan’ means stretching or

massaging.

⇒ During this aasana, the abdominal muscles are stretched and they get

a good massage.

⇒ During this aasana, there is gradual contraction and expansion of the

digestive organs, nerves and muscles, so it is particularly helpful and

effective for the treatment of stomach related disorders.

Aasana method: - Sit into a squatting pose keeping both feet a half meter

away from each other. Turning the torso from the waist as far back as

possible, look backwards and at the same time bend the left knee to

the ground. Then do it from the opposite direction.

⇒ With this aasana, water operates into the large intestine and pushes

the stool out.

After Shank prakshalna, two more actions are necessary.

1. Kunjal 2. Netikriya

Post-exercise relaxation: - After practice, rest for 45 minutes.

At this time your digestive system relaxes and after the release of toxic

substances, it acquires new energy.

⇒ Do not sleep for three hours after this, you can get a headache if you

go to sleep.

Page 13: ^^ vksme~ ** Gheranda Samhita - Vedamrita

Gherand - Samhita www.vedamrita.com

10

⇒ It happens many times in the practice that the body temperature

increases as you practice, because lukewarm water produces

perspiration. When body temperature increases, so many people think

at that time that I am getting fever. But this is not the case, it does not

cause fever.

Post meal exercise: - After forty five minutes of practice, you can eat khichdi.

Do not put too much burden on the digestive system after shank

prakshalana, so it is necessary to eat light food and khichdi is very light

and digestible.

⇒ Make liquid khichdi like water and add more amount of ghee to it.

Many times it also happens that there is no defecation for two to three

days, after the shank prakshalna. This does not mean that you are

getting constipated. This means that the stomach is completely empty

and after exercise food or khichdi takes a lot of time to travel in a 22-

feet long intestine. So whether there is defecation or not, there is no

need to be panic.

Rules of food: Up to seven days: - Milk or milk product, butter, cream, sweets,

tea, coffee, lemon, fruit, betel leaf, cigarette, tobacco, khaini, zarda

and similar intoxicants etc. are prohibited. Take satvik and simple food.

For forty days: - Do not consume non-vegetarian and allopathy medicines

or chemicals

Time:- It should be practiced at intervals of six to six months i.e only twice

a year. March and the month of September is considered suitable.

Precautions: Warisar is a secret kriya. The secret is that its method is very

long and all of it don’t know.

⇒ ⇒ ⇒ ⇒ ⇒ Don’t perform this action without getting direct education from a

yoga qualified teacher. it should be done with empty stomach and

bath is prohibited up to three hours of action. don’t sit under the fan

intensified. This kriya is highly confidential and It is also rare for the

Deities. Only by doing this karma does the body become like a

deity. There is no doubt about it. 19-20.

⇒ ⇒ ⇒ ⇒ ⇒ In this activity, the transmission and contraction of the stomach is

done. Which would massage all the abdominal organs and make all

internal organs systematic organized, their functionality increases. In

and hour) and circulate it and leave it out through anus. It is called

top secreat Bahishkrit Dhauti.

⇒ There is also another practice of Bahishkrit Dhauti, which is called

Mahadhoti or excluded prakshalna Dhauti. Before understanding this

dhoti, it is necessary to understand about its anatomy, because while

in general physiology there is knowledge of the nerves of the nervous

system, the physiology of yoga is even more subtle.

Meaning - Yoga should not be practiced in a far country, in forrest and in

the capital. Otherwise there can be loss in accomplishment, because

no one has faith in a distant country, Aranya (forest) remains guardless

and large population, light and uproar in the capital. That is why these

three places are forbidden for this.

⇒ In a beautiful religious country, where food is accessible and the

country is also free from disturbance, make a hut and make wall

around it. There should be a well or reservoir nearby.

place. Pranayama should be practiced there.

⇒ It is appropriate to start practice in spring and autumn. Because by

starting yoga in spring and autumn, one can attain Siddhi.

Mitahar- According to Maharshi Gheranda, the rule is to eat food, filling

50 percent ie half part of the stomach with food and remaining 25

percent i.e. one fourth part with water and keeping the remaining 25

percent ie one quarter empty for air circulation.

⇒ A seeker who does not diet during the time of starting yoga, many

diseases occur in his body and he does not have the perfection of

yoga.

Dietary Ingredients- The seeker should eat rice, barley, sattu, wheat flour,

Garlic, Kamarkha, Piyar, Asafoetida, Bean, Bada etc. is prohibited in

midday and evening time.

Special-Maharshi Gheranda has stated both milk and ghee prohibitory and

dietary.

Reason- Maharshi Gheranda has stated that milk and ghee are prohibited

in the beginning of yoga. Because milk increases sexual desire. But

after the practice of shatakarma, asana, mudra, pratyahara, sexual

desire turns into spiritual desire. Then Maharshi Gheranda has said

that the consumption of milk and ghee is dietary and said that before

pranayama, the consumption of milk ghee is mandatory because heat

is produced by pranayama and that heat starts burning the fat of the

body. Hence the habit of eating ghee among the practitioners of

Pranayama. So that the power of the body can compensate.

Meditate on your heart, imagine that there is an nectar sea (Amrit

Sagar), amidst the Manidweep (island), the island has many fruit-laden

trees, many flower types, a Kalpavriksha with four branches representing

the Vedas. In this way, meditate on your guru or your favorite deity in

your heart.

(2) Concentration on Guru in Sahastrar: - Sahastrar has a lotus of thousand

petals, among which there is a lotus of 12 petals. In the middle of it is a

pair of swans of nad (sound) and light. This is the lotus feet of the Guru,

here the Guru is sitting with his power wearing a white robe and a

garland, who is sitting wearing a red robe. In this way meditate on the

Guru in Sahastrar.

2. Jyoti Dhyan: - In Muladhara, there is the serpentine form of Kundalini

Shakti, here the soul resides in the form of a flame of a lamp. Here Jyoti

meditation is the meditation of the bright Brahma.

⇒ This light should be meditated on the aagya-chakra.

the sukshama Kundalini gets a rhythm in the soul, thus this meditation

is called sukshama meditation. This leads to self introspection.

⇒ Jyoti meditation is a hundred times better than sathool meditation.

⇒ Sukshama meditation is a million times better than Jyoti Dhyana (light

meditation).
