The Peak Academy - Home Learning Group: Snowdon Date: 15 th June – Week 3 Subject: Art and Design Learning Outcome: To experiment with media and process, adapting ideas and outcomes as we go (problem solving). To imagine and role-play what it is like to be an architect and a builder (real world applications). Learning Task: To construct a building. FIRST – Before you can begin to construct your building, you need to decide what type of building you wish to make. Have a look at the ‘Architecture types’ pdf and decide what type of building you would like to construct (you may decide to combine more than one type). You may find watching the first two videos helpful here, to show you how ideas can be generated. NEXT – You need to decide what materials you are going to make it from. There are lots of potential ideas, but the main thing is that you can use anything you have available at home. This could be lego, wooden blocks, cardboard, food packages, things from your recycling bin etc. Below are some images of the structures created by some of my past students: The first 2 were built with cheaper version of Lego in only 1 lesson. The second 2 students were not allowed to use glue and had to think of other ways to construct their structures. They had recycled cardboard, string and masking tape. Below there are a few YouTube clips of homemade buildings, some are child size, others are smaller. I am only asking you to construct one building, but you may decide to build a street or city. THEN – Get making, the possibilities are endless! If you don’t believe me, watch the last video link, a real sized house made entirely from Lego. FINALLY – Photograph your building and send it to Miss Gay. Extension – Did you know 100 million people use Minecraft to create their own worlds, towns and cities? Maybe you have a computer game or app that you love to use. Create a digital building - You may use something like Minecraft, Roblox, Fortnite, Little Big Planet, Animal crossing, The Sims etc. Key questions: What is the difference between an architect and a builder? What problems did you come up against and how did you solve them? Links to useful websites/ video clips: Think like an architect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmHoGicPQQQ
