Specialist Home Learning Program

Chores Sub-school: Seniors Week: 6 Date: Tuesday 19th May

What am I learning? I am learning to wash dishes by hand.

What is my teacher looking for? I can use a sink and cleaning materials to clean a load of dishes.

Not everyone has a dishwasher. I have only had one for a few years. Before that, it was all by hand. You may not have one now, or you might not have on in the future, or your might break down. Either way, it is probably a good idea to get used to washing by hand, just in case. So here we go:

Step 1: Dirty some dishes.

Cooking or eating will do this pretty quickly.

Step 2: Assemble your supplies.

Some things that you will need include: - Dishwashing detergent- A cloth- A scrubber of some kind- A sink full of water- Gloves (optional)

We have a special scrubby brush that you can see to the right. You put the detergent right in it so that it comes out through the sponge. It is very handy.

Step 3: Plug your sink and fill it with warm water and detergent.

Don’t make it too hot. You will be putting your hands in it after all. Warm water will do just fine. I like to squirt the detergent into the stream as it is running. This makes it mix in well and get plenty of suds.

Step 4: Scrub your dishes, one by one.

Using your cloth, or your scrubber wash the dishes in the soapy water.

If the cloth is not cutting it, a sturdier scourer might be needed to get the harder bits off.

Step 5: When you are finished, take a moment to wash the sink as the water drains.

While you are at it, why not kill two birds with one stone? Take your cloth and give the sink a wipe down. And don’t forget to rinse out the cloth and scourer at the end.

Questions to ask your child:

Which way do you think washes dishes better, a machine or by hand?

Why do we use warm water?

Why do we rinse the cloth/brush at the end?
