INTRODUCTION
KZN Climbing is a member of the South African National Climbing Federation (SANCF) which falls under
the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and is committed to the continual improvement of
competition sport climbing in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN). The main aim of the climbing league is to provide an
opportunity for adults and children to compete in a competitive, but fun atmosphere, at a standard that
will prepare them to represent their province. The competitions will be run according to IFSC competition
rules and will adhere to SASCOC’s strict code of conduct, unless local circumstances and conditions
dictate a change in rules and structure.
The competitions are structured into A and B Leagues. The coaches will decide which league climbers will
compete in according to the skills and enthusiasm of each climber. There are separate bouldering, speed
climbing and lead climbing leagues. Competition dates and categories can be found in this booklet. For
the benefit of parents who are unsure of the different categories, please have a look on the web for
videos.
The officiating committee of KZN is made up of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer,
Corporate Governance, Jury President. The committee is supported by various sub-committees.
This booklet contains information about the climbing competitions that take place in KZN and
competition dates for bouldering, lead climbing and speed climbing. The selection process for national
climbing competitions is briefly outlined. More information about climbing can be found on the SANCF
website.

A. Access to Competition venues.
No climbers competing in the Lead Climbing Competition will be allowed to be present at the competition
venue during the route setting phase and may not use or view the routes until required to do so.
B. Rules
Please note that it is the responsibility of each climber to memorise and understand the lead competition
rules. Failure to abide by the rules could result in disqualification. While it is expected that
teachers/parents coaches are familiar with the rules, ultimately the climbers will suffer the consequences.

Copies of the rules will be posted at the competition venue at prominent points.
C. Volunteers
Anyone interested in assisting as an official at the competitions, as judges, scorers, belayers, sponsorship,
catering etc., please contact the Jury president or the Secretary. Details can be found at the end of this
document.
D. Sponsorship
If anyone has any contact details or suggestions for sponsors, kindly forward this information to the
secretary.
E. School/Club Managers/Coaches Responsibilities
To finalise their lists of competitors and submit competitors’ details, via email to the secretary, 1
week before the event. This is required to plan effectively for the events. To submit registration
fees from schools, prior to the events. Climbers will not be allowed to compete unless fees have
been paid.
To ensure that each climber is entered into the correct age group as detailed below:

U17 Born in the years 2001 or 2002
U15 Born in the years 2003 or 2004
U13 Born in the years 2005 or 2006
U11 Born in the years 2007 or 2008
U9 Born in the years 2009 or 2010

To promote the wearing of suitable attire with school/club colours/emblems.
To ensure that all climbers wear acceptable safety wear, including helmets.
To identify and provide assistant climbers, to help with the belaying.
To find parents who will assist in the scoring, as judges.
To ensure this document is made available to coaches and parents.
F. Nationals
The top 5 climbers in each category qualify to be a part of the selection process to represent KZN. The
selection process will be a part of the league series and climbers may be selected to represent the
province before the completion of the series. Parents and coaches will be informed timeously of any
selection. An addendum will be made available on the process of selection.
Climbers who are unable to complete the series for medical or personal reasons but have shown
commitment to the sport may also qualify for selection, provided it is not to the detriment of climbers
who have undergone training schedules and have qualified by their position.
G. Refreshments
Refreshments will be available for purchase at the events held at Southern Rock and Kloof High School.
Climbers will need to provide their own refreshments for the events held at UKZN.
H. Prize Giving
Prize Giving will take place after the final event and all climbers are requested to attend.

1. Fees
Compulsory fees need to be paid in full, before any climber can take part in any provincial climbing
competition. Fees are to be paid directly into the KZN Climbing account:

R550.00 – per climber, for all provincial competitions held from February 2018 – May 2018
R200.00 – SANCF registration fee (mandatory fee)

All fees to be paid by 15 February 2018. Late fees will attract a R50.00 penalty fee.
Fees for the National Competitions will be discussed after the KZN Climbing finals and are separate from
the provincial fees.
2. Registration
Registration will start at 7h30 for weekend competitions, with the competition beginning at 8h00 and at
15h00 for weekday competitions with the competition starting at 15h30. Climbers (or their managers)

must report to the registration desk to have their names ticked and to confirm their age group. All fees
must be fully paid for climbers to compete in the competitions.
3. Briefing.
All managers and coaches are required to attend the briefing. The briefing will outline the procedures of
the day, scoring systems, safety considerations and general housekeeping. Failure to attend the briefing
will not be regarded as an excuse for failing to follow procedures or rules. Climbers will have their
briefing separately.
4. Viewing of routes
At the viewing of each route, the local rules will be explained by a route setter. This will be done for each
age group. Climbers may not ask about beta (information regarding climbing the route).
5. Isolation
There will be no isolation zones enforced except in the final event. It is felt that the opportunity to
support each other and encourage comradery outweighs any perceived advantage of isolation zones in
the preliminary events.
6. Climbing zone
The climbing zone will be demarcated by tape and/or desks and will be out-of-bounds to climbers,
managers, coaches and parents unless they are climbing or conducting official business. This is to keep
the area free and to improve safety.
7. Order of climbing
7.1 Lead: Two routes are climbed in each event. The order of climbing will be
determined initially alphabetically and then by previous scores. Climbers will be
informed of the order of climbing and must stick to it unless given permission by the
Jury President to change it. Climbers must be fully prepared to climb (harness on,
helmet on, shoes laced) at the time the climber before them has started their
attempt.
7.2 Bouldering: The number of problems (routes) will be determined by each venue. Climbers
will not climb in a specific order, except in the finals.

8. Score sheets
Climbers may view their score immediately after their attempt. In the case of a query, they must first
respect the observations made by the scorers and if after discussion there is no amiable conclusion, the
Jury President will be called to preside the matter.
9. Scoring
9.1 Lead: Scores are calculated according to the furthest holds held or used (positive
use) by the hands on the designated route. No score shall be awarded for a “touched” hold. A
hold will be deemed as “controlled” where a climber is able to use it to achieve a stable or
controlled position. A hold from which a climber has made a controlled movement in the
interests of making progress on the route will be deemed as “used” and will be given a “+” score.
No points will be awarded if the next hold is touched, but not used. The judges will make the call
as to whether the hold was touched or used. (Example – reaching and making finger contact is
‘touching’ and does not necessarily mean that it is in the interest of furthering progress on the
route.
To complete a route the climber must clip one of the final quick-draws at the top of the route
An attempt on a route shall cease if the climber:
- Falls
- Exceeds the fixed climbing time for the route as stipulated by the judge.
- Uses any part of the wall, holds or features, demarcated as out of bounds by tape.
- Uses, with their hands, the holes provided in the climbing wall for the placement of holds.
- Uses the side edges or the top edges of the wall, hangers, bolts or quickdraws for climbing
- Fails to clip a quick draw in accordance with the rules (ie. In sequence and before feet
move past the bolt (clipping in the roof has its unique circumstance.)
- Returns to the ground with any part of the body after having started their attempt.
- Uses any artificial aid. (like standing on a bolt or nut).
9.2 Bouldering: Points will awarded for completing a problem. Bonus points will be awarded when
the bonus hold is used (not just touched). The number of attempts will be recorded but will not
be used to determine scores.

10. Qualifying rounds.
Qualifying rounds are considered to be all the routes climbed in preliminary events as well as the 1 st route
on the day of the finals. The 1st route on the final day receives the same weight in ranking as the
previous qualifying events.
11. Finals.
The 2nd route in the final event is considered the final. Climbers who are ranked in the top 5 (or more at
the discretion of the organisers) will make the finals. A Super Finals will be held in the event of a tie and
therefore an additional climb will be done. Timing can be used to determine a result in certain
circumstances at the discretion of the organisers.
12. Ranking system
At the end of each round, the total points score for that round will be used to rank them according to the
IFSC World Ranking Table (Appendix 1). The top 4 scores will be used to calculate the ranking. These
ranking points will be added before the finals to determine the top 5. The ranking of each climber will be
made available for viewing in a maximum of 3 days after the event and any queries can be made to the
Jury president.
13. Timing
13.1 Lead. A maximum of 5 minutes will be allowed for all routes in the preliminary routes. Time is
taken from the point at which the climber leaves the ground. Any undue delay in the start will
receive a time penalty at the discretion of the judge.
Please note: Time is aimed at keeping the momentum of the competition and is not considered
to be a part of the scoring system unless used as a last resort when previous rounds fail to
separate results.
13.2 Bouldering. Climbers will be given an allotted time to attempt all problems in any order in
preliminary rounds. Five minutes per problem will be allocated in the finals
14. Objections
Any queries/objections have to be lodged with the Jury President no longer than 10 minutes after the
results have been posted. These will be resolved after consultation with all parties concerned.

15. Safety issues
Climbers must take responsibility for their own safety in ensuring that they wear a harness correctly, tie in
properly (figure 8 knot) and clip the quick-draws correctly. Belayers will assist them if necessary and will
check the knot hand harness. Where it is deemed necessary by the Safety Officer, Route setters and Jury
President, the 1st or 2nd quick-draws will be pre-clipped.
If a judge decides that further progress on a route is considered dangerous, the climber will be asked to
stop. This is likely to occur after a wrong clip, a Z clip or a movement that takes them to a position in
which a fall will be dangerous.
First Aid will be available at the venue.
16. Technical incidents
If during a climb a technical incident occurs a climber may choose to carry on in which case they can no
longer claim an incident. If they feel it has impeded their effort, they may claim a technical and request
to lower off immediately after speaking to the route setter, belayer or judge and describing the incident.
The Jury President will, in consultation with the chief route Setter, Judge and belayer, make confirmation
or non-confirmation of the incident and determine when the climber can try again.
17. Belaying
All belayers will use a device approved by the organisers and Jury President after consultation.
Senior climbers are expected to make themselves available on request to assist in belaying.
18. General Discipline and behaviour
Behaviour of climbers must be guided by:
- Rules of the competition
- Code of conduct of the schools and clubs
- Common sense, respect and integrity.
19. Anti-Doping
The SANCF is affiliated to both the IFSC (International Federation of Sport Climbing) and SASCOC (South
African Sports Council and Olympic Committee) in terms of which the SANCF has adopted the World Anti-
Doping Agency (WADA) Code. The code applies to all competitions held under the auspices of the SANCF
and all competitors, coaches, trainers and officials have deemed to have agreed to comply with the code
and are fully aware of the list of prohibited substances and medication and confirm they have not taken

any of these substances. A full copy of this can be downloaded from the SANCF website www.sancf.org.
Doping violations will be dealt in accordance with the IFSC Anti-Doping policy and Procedure.
20. Designated Officials
Note: All officials are volunteers who are giving of their free time without monetary compensation and
need to be respected for their efforts. Any aggrieved parents and climbers need to consider the bigger
picture and behave appropriately.
Where a designated officials’ son/daughter is competing on a route and that official is judging, scoring or
is in any way involved in officiating on that route or where there could be a conflict of interest between
an official and their son/daughter, it is their responsibility to notify the Jury Presidents and may choose to
recuse or remove themselves. Failure of the official to do so could place the results of the son/daughter
competitor at risk.

Explanation: A the end of each event, climbers are awarded points according to their position in that
event as shown below. The system is weighted to reward consistent performances while not prejudicing
a top climber who has a bad day.

By completing and submitting this form, __________________________(athlete’s name) agrees and undertakes in favour of the South African Climbing Federation ("SANCF") and any provincial body holding membership in SANCF, including KZN Climbing, UKZN, Westville Girls High School, Kloof High School Climbing, as well as Southern Rock, Durban and any of the aforementioned entity's employees, officers, members, servants and agents (hereinafter collectively referred to as “the Organisers”) that:

KZN Climbing Indemnity
I, the athlete of name, address and date of birth below and duly assisted herein by my guardian if I am a minor, do hereby agree and undertake in favour of KZN Climbing, its committees, members, servants and agents (herein referred to as “KZN Climbing”) that:
1. I am aware of the dangers of personal injury or death inherent in mountaineering, hiking, scrambling, bouldering, speed climbing, rock climbing and activities incidental thereto to which I may be exposed as a result of my participation in league activities and activities organized by or on behalf of KZN Climbing and I understand and accept that my participation in any such activities is at my own risk for which I accept all responsibility.
2. I, accordingly, hereby irrevocably waive, relinquish and abandon all claims of any nature whatsoever which I may have against KZN Climbing or any of its members, arising out of my participation in league activities and activities organized by or on behalf of KZN Climbing, for loss or damage to property, personal injury or loss of life, howsoever caused and irrespective of whether the loss or damage occurred as a result of negligence.
3. Should I be injured whilst participating in league activities or activities organized by or on behalf of KZN Climbing, I hereby appoint and authorise KZN Climbing member co-ordinating the activity (or such other person who is co-ordinating the activity on behalf of KZN Climbing) to consent to my undergoing surgical or other medical treatment which in the opinion of the attending medical practitioner is necessary. 5.1 I agree to be filmed, photographed or otherwise recorded while performing at KZN Climbing competitions and more generally in the context of authorised or recognised KZN Climbing events (e.g. interviews).
5.2 I grant KZN Climbing a royalty-free license to use such photographs or audio-visual recordings without limitation of time or territory for the promotion of Sport Climbing and to authorise third parties (in particular its broadcast partners) to use such photographs or audio-visual recordings in their coverage of KZN Climbing events through any media (known or to be known).
5.3 I agree that KZN Climbing or its affiliates may use my email address to send me newsletters or other KZN Climbing related information.
