Act 3: Students will glue a self-portrait (or photo) onto paper and add the body. They will then draw pictures of their favorite foods, cut them out and glue onto the body. Books: If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff,  Fruit by Sara Anderson,  Cook-a-Doodle Doo! by Janet Stevens, a variety of Cookbooks, etc.Set-up ideas:

Center could be set up as a restaurant for first week. Provide menus (real or student-made), paper for taking orders, toy food, dishes, aprons, etc.

Set up as a Holiday Celebration. Provide decorations (from many types of holidays) Have wrapping supplies and cards available. Turn and cover some of your dramatic play furniture to resemble a fireplace and mantle. Leave the stove uncovered and students can pretend to bake. Provide plenty of art supplies, so the students can make decorations that are meaningful to them.

Activities: Discuss the various aspects of dining

with others. Students can practice ordering food from a menu and using table manners.

Allow the children to create a space they enjoy. They can pretend they are wrapping gifts or baking holiday foods for someone.

Writing Component: Draw and write about a favorite meal (Treasures Social Studies Flip Chart p.21).  Create a menu for a restaurant.  Write down the “order” for the people who are “dining” in the pretend restaurant. Write a simple recipe for a favorite food (Treasures Science Flip Chart p.24).  Write a shopping list for a trip to the grocery store.  Write labels for foods in the store (Writing Flip Chart p.24).

Books: Eating the Alphabet :Fruits and Vegetables from A to Z by Lois Ehlert, A is for Airplane/a es para avion by Theresa Howell, The Alphabet Tree by Leo Lionni, etc.Act 1: Use letter cards to form words (Treasures Phonics Flip Chart p.19-20).   A divided lunch tray works well for this activity!

Act 2: Determine the beginning letter for common words. Sort pictures by initial sounds (Treasures Phonics Flip Chart p.21, 23). Thematic “food” pictures could be used.

Act 3: Make word puzzles with CVC words (Treasures Phonics Flip Chart p.24).  Find high frequency words in magazines, newspapers, etc.

Writing Component: Make ABC cards about foods (Writing Flip Chart p.23). Write and illustrate sentences using high-frequency words (Writing Flip Chart p.20, 22).  Practice writing this week’s focus letters and add pictures (Writing Flip Chart p.19, 21).  Create a word web of favorite foods (Phonics Flip Chart p. 22).

Act 2: Provide hula hoops or large pre-cut paper circles for the children to sort and count classroom objects, such as pencils, crayons, books, etc.

Act 2: Observe how objects move and order them according to their speed (Treasures Science Flip Chart p.22). Children can create simple ramps for this activity.

Act 3: Introduce the science fair process and let students brainstorm things to explore and investigate. Create an investigation chart based on student interest. Students may add their ideas during center time.
