Remembrance MassOur Remembrance Mass continues to be appreciated by the congregation. Many thanks go to Andrew  and  Fiona Buchanan and the music group. They performed all the hymns chosen by the Bereavement Committee which make the celebration so special.  Glenda Haswell has to be mentioned as our representative who searches out and finds the most poignant hymns, songs and verses, which are used every year. Her choice of hymns is always faultless. This year we chose to hand out poppies as our Remembrance mass fell on the centennial celebration of the end of World War 1. Helen Tome is to be congratulated, as a Committee member who patiently made 200 poppies. Thank you Helen. We thank all the members of the congregation who made the mass so special and who join us in remembering our loved ones who have passed away. Our thanks are also extended to Nan Perreau, leader of the Liturgy Committee and Corrine Ng who produces our Remembrance post cards each year.

Plenary Council The Plenary

Council in 2020 is about the future of the Church. To prepare, we all are invited to reflect on the question: “What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” The Scripture reference for the Plenary Council 2020 is “Listen to what the Spirit is saying”. It is a passage from the book of Revelation.

OLOP PLENARY COUNCIL LISTENING and DIALOGUETHANK YOU to everyone who participated in the OLOP Plenary Council Listening and Dialogue Sessions on Monday 12 November and Tuesday 13 November. We had small numbers, but rich and meaningful discussions about the Future of Our Church in Australia. From these sessions, a submission to the Plenary Council will be prepared on behalf of Our Lady of the Pines. This submission, together with submissions from all around Australia, will guide the preparation of the agenda for the Plenary Council. But it is also important for us all to make a personal submission via the Plenary Council website.OLOP can provide a ‘shopping list’ of what we would like our church to look like, and what changes will be necessary to get there. But what is really important, is for the bishops to understand WHY you feel this way. What have been the experiences in your life that have brought you to suggest the changes in our church you are suggesting at this time?If you Google – Plenary Council, it will take you to a menu link to Plenary Council 2020 which is at the website - plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au This will display - Have Your Say — Respond Click on this and go down the page to the large box in the centre of the page marked – Have your say - submit your responses. Click here Then follow the prompts and click on the ‘>>’ button. You will be asked as series of profile questions, including your age, and then three boxes will appear asking for your responses to –What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time? (500 word limit - if you would like to upload additional material, you can do so at the end of the submission)What questions do you have about the future of the Church in Australia that you would like the Plenary Council to consider? (500 word limit - if you would like to upload additional material, you can do so at the end of the submission)andWould you like to share a story about your experience of faith or of the Church in Australia that has shaped you? (500 word limit - if you would like to upload additional material, you can do so at the end of the submission)If the first question appears a little abstract, you may like to reply to this question by typing in what you would like our church to look like in (say) 2025.In relation to the second question, you may like to type in here what changes you consider are necessary in the church if we are to reach our aspirations for our church set out in your response to the first question. In relation to the invitation to ‘share a story’, it is imperative that the bishops understand your experiences of church in your life. Some of these will be stories of great joy and some will be experiences of great sorrow. But it is important that the bishops hear all our life stories. Your personal stories will go to the Plenary Council Facilitation Team and the Bishops, but your name will not be made public. Our new archbishop, Archbishop Peter Comensoli, would like to develop a profile about our hopes for the church in Melbourne. Accordingly, when you get near the end of your submission, you will be asked –Would you like a copy of your submission emailed to you? (Note: any files you may have uploaded will not be included in the copy.)• Yes

Year C – 1st Sunday of Advent –2nd of December

2018GOSPEL

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive what is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.’

DID YOU KNOW?•Advent is the beginning of the church’s liturgical year.•The Advent period is concerned with ‘waiting’ for the coming of the Christ child.•A recurring theme in the gospels read during Advent is looking towards the end times, when Christ will come again.•Today begins the cycle of readings for Year C in the Lectionary. This means that most of the gospel readings are taken from the Gospel of Luke.•The Advent wreath is one way of preparing for the coming of the Christ child. The circle of greenery is a symbol of God’s love without beginning or end, while the candles represent the four weeks of preparation time. Day.Extracted from the Summit Online

This Weeks Gospel

When the question of Christ's kingship comes up in the Gospel, Jesus redirects us to the true meaning of divine kingship. Without denying that he is king, he says: "The reason I was born into the world is to testify to the truth." He is not the king of a country or a world; he is the king of truth, the ruler of reality. The perception of reality that we develop when Jesus is not our teacher and interpreter and revealer of truth is warped and blurred by the falsehoods and misunderstandings and counterfeits that float around in the kingdom of the world.

When we sin, it's because we don't fully understand the reality of the situation. Jesus is not yet fully the king of that part of our lives. For example, think of a person who has asked you for something that you cannot afford to give. Perhaps it's the sick neighbor. Or the co-worker who doesn't have the level of faith that you have. Or the aging parent who needs more and more assistance.

Do you feel like you don't have enough to satisfy their needs? Are you so tired from your own burdens that you cannot take on someone else's? Well, it's our flesh nature that says we cannot enjoy doing more for others than we're already doing. This is a warped view of reality; it looks like we'll be happier if we cater to our own desires instead of taking care of someone else's need.

In true reality, a joyful life- style develops when we listen to the voice of Jesus, even when he says, "go the extra mile" or "be like the Good Samaritan and take a detour to minister to others". We have to trust the truth that he teaches, regardless ofhow little we understand it.

Understanding grows in the doing of God's will more than in the thinking about it. Joy grows as we gain the understanding that comes from seeing some of the fruits of what we've done. When we sin, it's because we cannot envision the good fruits that will come from doing things the way Christ tells us to. Under his kingship and the Holy Spirit's wisdom, we gain freedom to overcome all of our sinful tendencies.

Reflect & Discuss:1."FEAR" is "False Evidence Appearing Real." What is fear telling you about the ways of Christ?
