Positive Discipline TechniquesAt Love N Cherish we do not inflict corporal punishment in any manner upon a child. (Corporal punishment is defined asthe use of physical force to the body as a discipline measure. Physical force to the body includes, but is not limited to,spanking, hitting, shaking, biting, pinching, pushing, pulling, or slapping.), Use any strategy that hurts, shames, or belittlesa child, Use any strategy that threatens, intimidates, or forces a child, Use food as a form of reward or punishment, Use orwithhold physical activity as a punishment, Shame or punish a child if a bathroom accident occurs. Embarrass any child infront of others, Compare children, Place children in a locked and/or dark room, Leave any child alone, unattended orwithout supervision, Allow discipline of a child by other children, Criticize, make fun of, or otherwise belittle a child'sparents, families, or ethnic groups.

Set boundaries with positive discipline. Discipline should be taught to children as part of their long-term socializationprocess, with gentle, trusted adults Build a trusting relationship with each child.Give children plenty of time to practice discipline skills many, many timesPrevent discipline problems in advance by altering the environment, schedule, or expectations

4. Discipline will be appropriate to the child's developmental stage

Address the child's needs. If a child is acting out, he or she probably has some negative emotions motivating the behavior.Involve the child in the problem-solving process. Ask whether the behavior is appropriate and how the child can change thebehavior to be more appropriate. Teachers may use the "Stop and Go" technique or other similar approaches.

Provide the child with feedback on behavior and choices, especially when the choices are appropriate - catch the childdoing things right!

Supervision of ChildrenAppropriate adult supervision is required at all times, both in the classroom and on the playground. No child is ever to beleft unattended or out of a teacher's sight. Only employees of the Academy count in supervision ratios. Employees whohave not worked for at least 6months in a licensed child care center may count in our ratios, but may not be left alone withchildren.

School age children must always be within a supervising adult's earshot but may occasionally walk in the hall or to therestroom alone or with a friend.

RatiosWe strive to maintain ABC Level A ratios at all times. We must always maintain DSS ratios as a minimum. DSS ratiosmust be posted in every classroom at all times. Teachers in two-year-old room and older may self- break at nap time oncethe children are settled and/or asleep.

When one teacher is working with a small group, the other will mingle with other children all over the room, encouragingsocialization, asking open-ended questions, helping children with self-help skills, and supervising blind spots.

Intoxication-child release policyIf a parent/guardian or other authorized pick-up individual arrives appears to be impaired, intoxicated or under theinfluence of drugs, do not not release the child to the person under any circumstance; we reserve the right to keep the childat the center. The teacher will consult with director and we will:1. Contact another parent or another approved emergency contact person to pick up the child;2. Call the Department of Social Services;3. Call law enforcement.

The above procedures may be used in any order necessary depending on the circumstances.

Tracking PolicyA parent/guardian or another adult must accompany every child to the classroom and notify the teacher that the child ispresent. Parents will use the interior key pad to sign in and out. Please recognize that for safety reasons children may notwalk to their classrooms alone. Teachers must be informed by a parent/guardian when a child leaves the classroom, goesoutside on the playground, and leaves at the end of the day. The Academy is not responsible for the child until a teacherrecognizes the child as being present.

Classroom teachers will enter the time of each child's arrival and departure on the classroom's Tracking Sheet. Do not leavethis responsibility up to parents; it is your responsibility to know exactly which children are in your care at all times and torecord their arrivals and departures.

Staff will count and record hourly (or as needed more often) throughout the hours of operation the number of the childrenpresent in each classroom.

Every time the children transition* to a different location, the teacher(s) will make a head count of the students and recordthe information on the Tracking Sheet. When children transition from one space to another, one teacher must be in front ofthe group and another teacher must be in back of the group with all of the children in between. Children should not go intoa space before an adult. An adult should be the last person to leave a space to ensure that all the children are with the group.Tracking will be kept on file for two (2) weeks.

*Transition means when children move from indoors to outdoors, from outdoors to indoors, when they enter and exit avehicle or move to a new location in and around the Academy or anywhere else that we have responsibility for the child.

August is a time full of transition for our Academy. Many children and teachers move into new classrooms, and manychildren join us from outside of the Academy. As a high-quality school, it is vital that teachers are present to receive thenew children, attend the training and work days, and be present at the start of the new session to set the tone. For thesereasons, all staff are expected to work during the month of August, and not request time off.

On any workday there will be no more than one full time employee and one part-time (floater) off in order to ensure a safeand healthy daily operation. Time off will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Last minute requests for days offwill be honored whenever possible and when coverage is available. Time off must be requested at least 2 weeks in advance.Teachers from the same team may not take the same days off. Classroom teachers, talk to your team mate to ensure that

there are no conflicts

S Look at the calendar to determine which days are available BEFORE making plansS If you are requesting fewer than 5 hours, use a <5 slot and write the hours you are requesting off. If you are

requesting 5 hours or more, use a 5+ slot.S Write your first and last name in pen in the appropriate slot, and the hours you are requesting off.S DO NOT write your name where no 5+or <5 slot exists.S Classroom teachers, tell your team mate which days you have requested offS If you change your mind about taking a day tell the Director and she will remove your name. directly to the Director before adding your name to the calendar.S IF days are blocked off because staff are required to work, do sign up for them since you are required to work. If

days are blocked off for a different reason, follow the instructions indicated on the calendar to submit a reqestS It is your responsibility to check Love N Cherish Academy's Academic Calendar to know when important events

are scheduled to occur that you are required to attend.S If the time-off calendar is not yet up for the time you wish to request, or if the calendar says"use a leave request"

on that day, print a Leave Request Form from the www.lovencherish.org. Do not put any other requestin in theLeave Request Folder-they will not be seen by the Director and they will not be honored.

S If you have followed these procedures your request will be approved. Requests that do not follow policy orprocedures will not be considered.

What to do if the day you want is already full:Choose a different day.Consider switching shifts with you team-mate if that will accommodate your request.Ask the other people signed up for the day if they are able to switch days. After trying the above ideas, let the Direct know that you are interested in the day. If someone else cancels, we may be ableto approve your request.People generally have plans for the time they request off, so your best bet is to look at the calendar before making plans, and choose days that are available.

LNCA APPROACH TO CURRICULMThe curriculum reflects a balance of developmental areas including social-emotional development, large and small motorskills, creative arts, dramatic play, reading and language, science and discovery, math and problem-solving, health andsafety, social studies, and technology. The Academy uses teacher- created curriculum using the NAEYC CurriculumStandards(http://www.naeyc.org/files/academy/file/AllCriteriaDocument.pdf), the South Carolina Early Learning Standards(http://childcare.sc.gov/main/docs/gsgs_finalbook_022608.pdf), and Kindergarten AcademicStandards(https://ed.sc.gov/agency/se/instructional-practices-and-evaluations/). A guide for parents is also available(http://childcare.sc.gov/main/docs/ParentGuidetothestandards8.6.08.pdf). Teachers also consider information received fromchildren's assessments and individual families when implementing the curriculum. Currently, the work of prominenttheorists in the field of early childhood education contributes to the curriculum foundation. Piagetian theory, whichdescribes the interaction of children with their environment in the development of intelligence, strongly influences theinstructional methods used in the program. Our classrooms are rich in "hands-on" materials and provide many opportunitiesfor children to actively participate in their own learning.

Teachers and co-teachers serve as guides in the learning process. It is the teacher's responsibility to organize a classroomthat provides for children's safety and facilitates exploration, problem-solving, language and literacy development, andcollaboration. The teachers strive to ask appropriate questions and guide the children into evaluating their actions andsubsequent learning. Children's ideas are respected, and they are encouraged to discuss and act on them until they aresatisfied with the results. These teaching strategies are designed to instill independence, courage, and cooperation in youngchildren --traits which will have lifelong benefits.Skill development is an important part of the curriculum. Language, problem-solving, mathematical understandings, fineand gross motor skills are developed appropriately through large and small group activities, attractive and well-equippedlearning centers, and outdoor experiences. Field trips are chosen for their value to the children's interests and learning needs

Field TripsField trips are to enhance and reinforce weekly learning objectives and to provide first hand experiences for the children. All field trips must be planned and approved prior to sending information home to parents. Please refer to the Field TripPlanning form for more information. The Academy's enrollment contract includes a Field Trip Authorization Form. However, a parent's signature will be required each time children aged three and up are going to use LNCA's bus to leavethe Academy grounds for a planned outing. When planning a field trip, the Teacher submits a Field Trip Checklist to anadministrator at least two weeks in advance. Approved outings are designed to contribute to the curriculum and bringlearning to life through a hands-on look at the world beyond the Academy.

Expectations of SupervisionStaff should focus their full attention at all times when supervising children. Frequent interaction is required. This isaccomplished through talking and encouraging the children, setting out new activities and closing old activities.Conversations between staff and parents should be short when supervising children. Staff must be aware of all of thechildren while dealing with a small group or helping a parent. This is critical to a safe and effective classroom environment.Keep a head-count of all children at all times, especially after transition between indoor and outdoor activities.Notify another staff member before you leave the room or the playground. Be mindful to limit the number of times that youleave the classroom and keep those times brief. It is your responsibility to secure supervision prior to leaving yourclassroom or your children.Supervision is active, not passive!
