LUNATICFROM LATIN: Lunaticus (luna = moon)

Dating back to the 13th century, a

lunatic was thought to be someone who

went insane depending on the

phases of the moon (possibly bi-polar

disorder).

Today “lunatic” is a synonym for “crazy.”

Interesting connected words: an Insane Asylum is commonly referred to as a Loony Bin. The word “loony” also comes from the Latin word “luna” although its connotation has been completely lost.

By the 17th century, a lunatic was either a foolish man or a madman
