LUNATICFROM LATIN: Lunaticus (luna = moon)
Dating back to the 13th century, a
lunatic was thought to be someone who
went insane depending on the
phases of the moon (possibly bi-polar
disorder).
Today “lunatic” is a synonym for “crazy.”
Interesting connected words: an Insane Asylum is commonly referred to as a Loony Bin. The word “loony” also comes from the Latin word “luna” although its connotation has been completely lost.
