The Fifth Sunday in Lentalso known as

Passion Sunday11:00 am, March13, 2016 AD

Sacrifice of Isaac, Armenian Gospel, c. 1455

“Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.  He saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen

Abraham?”

Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to

throw at him, but Jesus hid himself...

John 8:56-59

The Fifth Sunday in LentOpening Hymn: 122 The Royal banners forward go  [Tune 2: Ganfalon Royal]

Worship continues on page 1 of the liturgy booklets. The Collect:  WE beseech you, Almighty God, mercifully to look upon your people: that by your great goodness they may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.Almighty and everlasting God, who hates nothing that you have made, and forgives the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

First reading: Exodus 24:4-8Psalm 143

1  Hear my prayer O Lord, and consider my ’ de’sire : hearken unto me for thy ’ truth and ’ righteousness’ ’ sake.2  And enter not into judgement ’ with thy ’ servant : for in thy sight shall ’ no man ’ living be ’ justified. 3  For the enemy hath persecuted my soul, he hath smitten my life ’ down to the ’ ground : he hath laid me in the darkness, as the ’ men that have ’ been long ’ dead. 4  Therefore is my spirit ’ vexed with’in me : and my ’ heart with’in me is ’ desolate.

5  Yet do I remember the time past, I muse upon ’ all thy ’ works:yea, I exercise myself in the ’ works of ’ thy ’ hands. 6  I stretch forth my hands ’ unto ’ thee : my soul gaspeth unto thee ’ as a ’ thirsty ’ land.

- 2 -

7  Hear me O Lord and that soon, for my spirit ’ waxeth ’ faint : hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go ’ down ’ into the ’ pit. 8  O let me hear thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning, for in thee ’ is my ’ trust : shew thou me the way that I should walk in, for I lift up my ’ soul ’ unto ’ thee. 9  Deliver me O Lord ’ from mine ’ enemies : for I flee ’ unto ’ thee to ’ hide me. 10  Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth thee, for thou ’ art my ’ God : let thy loving Spirit lead me forth ’ into the ’ land of ’ righteousness. 11  Quicken me O Lord for thy ’ Name’s ’ sake : and for thy righteousness’ sake bring my ’ soul ’ out of ’ trouble. 12  And of thy goodness ’ slay mine ’ enemies : and destroy all them that vex my soul, for ’ I am ’ thy ’ servant.Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Lesson: Hebrews 9:11-15But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Therefore he is the mediator of a new

covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 118 (vs. 1,2,3,6) O Love how deep, how broad, how high

-3-

The Gospel: St John 8:46-59 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” The Jews answered him, “Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon, but I honour my Father, and you dishonour me. Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it, and he is the judge. Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” The Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon! Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died! Who do you make yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’ But you have not known him. I know him. If I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. After the Gospel we sing: Praise to you, O ChristSermonOffertory Hymn: 121 Sing my tongue
