JRBA REACHES OUT
Missions Committee
I. Disaster Relief : Let us reach out in love to the many people devastated by the flooding, tornadoes, etc. of recent days.A. Financial: Cash gifts sent to our Baptist General Association of Virginia Disaster Response will help a lot. Also, let us be prepared to
give generously to this cause at our Annual Fall Meeting on October 18.B. Mission Going: If you are trained in Disaster Relief and are willing to help in relief work, please contact Aaron Lee, at 1-800-255-2428.

C. Hospitality: As persons come through our area fleeing from the disasters, let us show Christian love to them as we lovingly help them find shelter and food and help meet other needs.
II. Our Blue Ridge Food Ministry needs many volunteers to help with food distribution at 9:30 AM on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month.
III. Our 2018 Missions Blitz took place on September 29. We pray that each church and each participant received a spiritual blessing through serving others in Jesus’s name. We also pray that we were able to bless many lives through our missions efforts.
IV. Through our Hope for Appalachia missions we are asked to collect new hats and gloves, and new or “gently-used” clean coats for adults, youth, and children of Appalachia. Please bring them to the associational offices by October 24, 2018.
V. Rise Against Hunger : Please continue to give your gifts for Rise Against Hunger so we can package more meals than ever in the spring of 2019.

DISASTER RELIEF UPDATE
I just returned from serving as a Crisis Care Chaplain with a BGAV Disaster Response Team. Our team operated in and out of Washington, NC, based in Second Baptist Church, to bring aid in many different ways. The feeding crew was the first of many on the ground. As of September 28, eleven units from around the state had responded. As of September 24, the feeding team demobilized after feeding 35,631 meals to those who were impacted by Hurricane Florence. The work has been expanded to hold recovery crews in First Baptist Church in Washington. The teams are providing flood and debris cleanup throughout Beaufont and Jones Counties. Crisis Care, showers, and laundry offer additional support. The Disaster Response will be ongoing for 8 – 9 months and volunteers are needed in the roles of cleanup, feeding (the volunteers), and laundry. There will also be a need for those who have maintenance or mechanical experience. There will be plenty of miscellaneous tasks for all who are intersted in serving.
If you have never been a part of a feeding group, recovery group, etc., please consider going. The basic training is available online at www.my.BGAVDR.org. Additonally, the current need for volunteers is so great that you can volunteer and train “on site”. There is more than enough work to keep all busy for a long time! Jesus tells us to “love God and then love our neighbor,” so let’s go because we love God and make love for our neighbors real.

CHURCH OUTREACH
Antioch Union provided 4 hat/glove sets and 6 hat/scarf sets for Hope for Appalachia.
On Septembe 22, seven members of Buckingham gave out free hotdogs, water, chips, and cookies atChrisitan Outreach in Jesus’s name.
The Sunday School Fellowship Class of Cedar recently sponsored two benefits to raise money for a Jesus film and church planting resource kit that would reach 30,000 people. Their goal in this endeavor was to raise $3,240.00 – they exceeded their goal by over $600.00! They give all the praise to God for this wonderful success. The choir and church family visited Heritage Hall Nursing Home on August 22, and enjoyed a time of song and fellowship with the residents there. The Women on Mission continue to collectfor the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes and Hope for Appalachia boxes through the water bottles passed out earlier to be filled with change or checks.
Goshen completed a project for the Missions Blitz on Saturday, Sepember 22, with eleven participating. They traveled to Envoy at The Village in Fork Union, a skilled nursing facility.

Antioch (Scottsville) served 207 individuals at their 5 Loaves 2 Fish Ministry Meal in August. They distributed 78 boxes of food. 123 folks were fed at the September event. Antioch members and friends collected a tractor-trailer load of supplies for flood victims in NC and left with it on Friday, September 21. Earlier Gary and Perry Clore took a truck load of supplies to North Carolina.
First Baptist Dillwyn carried out several projects for the Missions Blitz on September 29. They did repair work on the home of a family in need. A hotdog lunch was prepared and served to many persons. Lunches were delivered to individuals who could not come to the church. Personal letters were written to college students, community service people, shut-ins, and others. Magazines, Bible Studies, Medical tracts and other items were distributed to those who came by the church. FBC members joined others form JRBA in building ramps for 2 families. The Adult Men and Women’s Sunday School Class brought their “adopted” family to the church to share lunch. The Foundations SS Class prepared and delivered “Happiness Bags” to folks going through rough times. The bags contained all kinds of goodies: tissues, chocolates, notecards,mints, hand sanitizer, crossword puzzles, word finds, etc. The chlldren of FBC made about 25 treat bags for the deputies of the Buckingham Sheriff’s Department. Through these projects FBC expressed the love of Jesus to those who came to the church and to those who were visited. FBC had 40 participants in the Missions Blitz who provided blessings to many people.
Jones Chapel will host a Trunk-or-Treat on Saturday, October 27, in the church parking lot for chldren who would like a safe place to show off their costumes and get candy! Jones Chapel is a sponsor of the Pregnancy Center and participated in the Walk for Life at High Bridge Trail State Park on September 29. Their ongoing mission projects include the youth collecting coats for students, collecting food items for Backpacks of Love, and purchasing items for Hope for Appalachia.
Mulberry Grove’s concentrations for September were the Alma Hunt Offering for State Missions, preparing for the JRBA Mission Blitz on September 29, and collecting hats, gloves, blankets, and coats for the Hope project. Donations for the Appalachia project will continue until mid-October. Members continue to volunteer at the bi-monthly food distribution at the Crystal Cathedral, and the outreach ministry to shut-ins is ongoing. Members have provided 9 blankets and 1 pair of gloves for Hope for Appalachia.
Current efforts at Sharon include collections of additional school supplies for local children, and warm, winter outerwear for the fall delivery by Hope for Appalachia. Monetary contributions are focused o the Alma Hunt State Mission Offering, and support for Virginia Baptist Disaster Response teams. Rose of Sharon WMU continues visiting with and delivering meals to those who are sick or home-bound.
On Wednesday, September 26, Jim and Joy Dorsey delivered Tar Wallet’s Hope for Appalachia items to Culpeper.

OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE>>>
I have taken on the responsibility of bringing a HOPE team to Kentucky this coming spring. Please keep our team and all of the other teams in prayer. Mt. Zion will adopt a school again this year and we need each of you to make boxes if you can. I will be getting information out to you as to making
the boxes fit the appropriate age and gender. (The list may be slightly different this year.) It is very
important that every box contain the listed items. It looks like approximately 1400-1500 boxes will be needed in all this year as additional schools have requested to be included.
I need volunteers to actually go in the spring when we deliver the boxes and interact with the students. Please pray about it. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me. And, of course,
we are going out on November 28, to carry coats, hats, etc. to the schools, too. If you want to go on the fall delivery, please call me right away and I will get information to you. If you plan to go, you must get a background check on yourself and have the results when we go to the schools. Thank you for your consideration and help. Your prayers are coveted for the entire ministry.

Pastor’s Huddle
It was nice to gather with our “core” of pastors at the last Huddle. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by Hurricane Florence and to the volunteers as they serve in the Carolinas (for one of our pastors, Rev. Woody Moore, in particular, who was missed at the Huddle while he was serving. I want to encourage each pastor to plan on joining us for our next meeting on October 17. Jones Chapel Learns and Grows
Pastor Richard has been leading a Wednesday night Bible Study on the Book of Daniel over the past several weeks, leading up to a new study on the Book of Revelation. Anyone who would like to join in for this study is welcome.

Goshen celebrated its 160th birthday on Sunday, September 23, 2018. JRBA congratulates Goshen on its many years of faithful service to God and to the community.
Cedar extends sympathy to the family of Dennis Waycater who passed away on August 24.
Jones Chapel extends heartfelt sympathy to Carlton Ownby and the rest of the family, on the passsing of his wife, Mary Ownby.

Dear JRBA,Your gift* matters! Your gift heals! You make redemption and Jesus real. Your compassion makes disciples – and even ministers! Because of you, Pastor Costella Forney can share her story of transformation.
Incarcerated at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women since 2001, Costalla spent her time developing a close relationship with the chaplain…She participated in programs like Baptism class, Church Choir, and Bible Study. She received pastoral counseling. As a tutor in the WorkWise program, Costella worked diligently on her life and spirit. Her strong faith was so evident that her chaplain invited Costella to become a member of the Worship Leadership Team where she served the “inside” church for many years. She had many fears as she approached release in June 2016. She said, “God took care of it all. That is my testimony. Just a sample: As I was getting realeased, I had 3 big practical fears. My first fear was actually walking out of the gate. In the back of my mind I kept thinking, my legs would give….my knees would buckle….so overwhelmed that I couldn’t take it. But, God took care of it. An officer talked to me, calmed me, made it better. My second fear was probation. What would it involve? When I went, the lady gave me a form to fill out and I turned it back in. She told me orientation is on Wednesday – and that was it. I was like, That’s it? Yes. That was it. God took care of it! For eight months I reported – and then I was put on Shadow Track. My third fear was driving. I was petrified. Things had changed so much since I had driven. The thought of taking the test shot my nerves. But, I studied online and passed both test with 100%. I got a car in December (another God-gift) and I have been driving ever sense – just recently getting on the interstate! God took care of it! God has been with me all the way. The things I learned in prison from my chaplain and volunteers, I have applied. Whatever my fears, God is with me. God took care of it. God has been so good to me.”
Costella was invited to preach at John Wesley United Methodist Church on Mother’s Day 2017 – her call was evident. Costella studied and worked as a lay-servant and had taken classes all along. This year the District Superintendent surprised Costella callilng her in to speak with him. Smiling, he said, “It isn’t every day that someone is appointed the pastor of the church where they grew up.” And with that, her call and her job as pastor was sealed. After licensing class in May of 2019, Costella will become a licensed local pastor for the United Methodist Church. In the meantime, Pastor Costella Forney is sharing her living testimony while serving as pastor to her beloved church.

shipped to Haiti. They went in a shipment of 285,120 meals to the RAH partner, Haiti Outreach Ministries. This is an organization that nourishes lives through food assistance and other services in Haiti.

If your church would like to conduct an “Embrace the Joy” Emphasis in your church, please contact Eddie Stratton or Don Campbell, BGAV Development Office, at 1-800-255-2428. “Embrace the Joy” is a 3-week emphasis equating generosity and joy. It is Bible-based and stresses the joy of stewardshp generosiy. It is led by an outside consultant who works with the church staff in the calendaring and conducting of the event. The event will challenge members of the congregation to prayerfully and reasonably consider their anticipated generosity for the following calendar year. The approximate expense for this program is $250 for a church with a membership of 149 or less.
Another Stewardship tool is available from the Virginia Baptist Foundation. “Miraculous Generosity” is a FREE DVD Bible Study designed to unlock the generous heart in every believer. It explores how God transforms our humble gifts into modern-day miracles when we step out in faith. JRBA COMMITTEE MEETINGS
The JRBA Program Committee met on Monday, September 10, at the Associational office to work on the program for the upcoming Annual Fall Meeting. In attendance were committee members Phyllis Tyler, Clarence Gormus, Judy Ownby, Geraldine Whaley, and Moderator Rev. Michael Khol. Rev. John Moxley and Rev. Jimmy Dunn attended, representing the host church, First Baptist Dillwyn. A draft of the program was completed and members of the committee plan to contact all those who will be asked to participate. The early business session will be followed by a fellowship dinner and a traditional worship service. The program will be presented for approval to the Executive Board on October 8.
The JRBA Finance Committee also met on Monday, September 10, to prepare a proposed budget for 2018-2019. In attendance were Chair, Judy Ownby, and committee members, Audrey Ragland and Betty Toney. The 2017-2018 budget and expenditures were examined and a proposed budget was outlined, in accordance with new guidelines adopted at the July 2018 Executive Board Meeting. The proposed budget will be presented at the October 8th Executive Board Meeting for discussion and approval. Once approved by the board, it will be presented for final approval at the Annual Fall Meeting on October 18.
The JRBA Audit Committee (Audrey Ragland and Frank Breault) met with Judy Ownby, Treasurer, to examine the 2017-2018 financial records of JRBA and the John E. Mann, Sr. Benevolence Fund. All finances were found to be in order. The committee’s report will be presented at the October 8th Executive Board Meeting for approval.

As our church year wraps up and our Harvest Festival season starts up, let us turn to the LORD and celebrate what He is and will continue to do through His servants. By the time you read this, we will have the Missions Blitz behind us (although as I write this I have to speak in faith that all will go well😊). I am always encouraged when I see churches coming together for a greater good. I want to thank each church for what they are doing in their own communities, in the name of Jesus, to further His kingdom and the Gospel. I look forward to my second year as Moderator of the association and trust for another fruitful and peace-filled year.

7 WAYS TO SHOW APPRECIATION TO YOUR PASTOR
1. Simply say “thank you” for what they do. Most pastors don’t hear this enough. Send a card or email, or call them up.2. Thank their family. Remember that it is hard to be a pastor’s spouse or kid. Let them know you appreciate them, perhaps with a tangible gift.3. Recognize special days for the pastor and their family. (Birthdays, Anniversaries, etc.)4. Pray for your pastor! Ask for specific requests, pray for them, and follow up by asking how these things are going.5. Organize people in your ministry to provide some sort of recognition for the pastor.6. Protect your pastor and have his back. Never undermine or engage in ungodly criticism of your pastor – support him, whether or not you
agree. 7. Lead your ministry well. When you say you’ll do something, follow through! If your pastor knows he can depend on you, it will be a true
