PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Are you a young artist in England? Aged 4-18? Don’t miss this fantastic chance for your work to be shown alongside established artists in an exhibition that will tour to major galleries!Generation ART: Young Artists on Tour is a new exhibition that will begin at Turner Contemporary, Margate this June, before touring to New Walk Museum and Art Gallery and Soft Touch Arts in Leicester, and Quay Arts on the Isle of Wight in 2015-16.

If you’d like to see your art in these amazing venues - alongside work by established artists - all you need to do is send us a digital image of ONE artwork of which you are particularly proud.

Tell us how, when, where and why you made it - maybe you were inspired by a professional artist, or by a visit to a gallery? If so we would really like to know! It can be art in any medium - digital, video, painting, drawing, sculpture; it can be a finished artwork, or a piece of research - a drawing, study or model or maquette. Your choice!

The deadline for submissions has been extended to 10am on Monday 13 April 2015.

A panel of young and adult artists will then select the most exciting art for the exhibition. Even if your work doesn’t get to go on tour, it may well feature in the high profile Generation ART online resource, showcasing the talent and creativity of young artists today.

Submit your work online at www.engage.org/GenART and spread the word to your friends.

Teachers, workshop leaders and parents/guardians can also enter for individuals and groups aged 4 to 18 by click, so please let them know too.

Connect on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GenerationARTYoungArtistsOnTour, or if you prefer to use Twitter or Instagram you can use the hashtag #GenART_Tour to see updates and images relating to the exhibition.

Run by engage, the National Association for Gallery Education, in collaboration with venues and partners, Generation ART is supported by Arts Council England’s Strategic touring programme.

FAQ

(Frequently Asked Questions)

Why should I submit an artwork?

If you have made an artwork you are proud of, you could be in with a chance for it to be included in a national touring exhibition! Generation ART: Young Artists on Tour will celebrate the ability of children and young people to create excellent artwork, and promote the benefits of children and young people working with art, artists and galleries.

The exhibition will tour to venues in the South East, South West and East Midlands, giving communities in their areas access to an exhibition of artwork by established artists shown alongside artwork selected from children and young people all over England.

A larger body of selected work from the submission will form a unique, freely available digital resource which will support the exhibition tour, inspire teachers, artists and visual arts educators, and provide a legacy well beyond the life of the project.

The more high quality submissions we receive, the louder the message will be that young people are capable of excellence in art, and that the arts are important to learning and education.

Please do submit an artwork and pass on the opportunity to your friends, teachers or other adults with whom you do art.

Read more about the project aims and outcomes on at www.engage.org/aboutGenART.

Who can submit an artwork

- Can I submit my own artwork?Young Artists aged 14 to 18 (at 13 April 2015) can apply for themselves, and submit one artwork. Submissions must be validated by an adult. Young Artists must ask an adult educator to submit an artwork made in a group, see below.

Young Artists aged 4 to 13 (at 13 April 2015) must ask an adult educator (teacher, artist, carer/parent/guardian, gallery educator, youth worker) to submit an artwork on their behalf. For further information, visit the FAQ for Adult Educators.

- I turn 19 at the end of March or beginning of April 2015, can I still submit? We’re afraid not. If you will be over 18 at 13 April 2015 we are sorry that you aren’t able to submit. You are very welcome to get involved with Generation ART in other ways. Connect with Generation ART on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GenerationARTYoungArtistsOnTour. If you prefer to use Twitter or Instagram you can use the hashtag #GenART_Tour to see updates and images relating to the exhibition.

- Why is the opportunity only open to young artists from England?Generation ART is a pilot programme run by engage, the National Association for Gallery Education, which has received Strategic touring funding from Arts Council England. It is hoped that the programme will return in 2017 and will be open to entrants across the UK.

If you are from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland we would encourage you to get involved with Children’s Art Week, a UK-wide programme encouraging children, young people, families and teachers to engage with the visual arts, which will take place later this year from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 June. Further information is available at www.childrensartweek.org.

- Are there any other restrictions?Yes. Please note that immediate family members of employees or trustees of engage, of Turner Contemporary, of New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, of Soft Touch Arts, of Quay Arts, or of the Spark Arts for Children, are not able to apply.

How to choose an artwork

- I have made lots of great artwork! What should I submit? There is no required style or theme, so you are free to impress as you like. The selection panel includes young people and adults, so you need to surprise and excite a range of people with different tastes and interests. Show them what a new creative generation can imagine and make.

They are especially keen to see that you have worked with artists, looked at work by other artists, or visited galleries or outdoor art. They might be impressed if you have tried a new technique or experimented by mixing up media or inspirations from different sources.

Please note: The organisers will not select artwork that they consider obscene, pornographic, that contains swear words or that could reasonably be deemed offensive.Work that is too large, fragile, dangerous, unstable or technically complex to install may not be selected for the exhibition (although it may be included in the digital resource). You should bear this in mind when deciding what to submit.

- What information will I need to provide? On the submission form, you will be asked what your ideas or aims in making the artwork were, and if you faced and overcame any challenges in making the artwork. Please think about this before you start the form.

You will also be asked to give the title, size and media (what you made the work with) / process (how you made it) - please ask an adult if you are not sure how to answer these questions.

- Does the age category apply to when I submit my entry, or when I created the artwork? Please choose the age category which applies to when you created the artwork.

- Can I submit artwork that I created for another project? Yes, as long as the artwork fits with the guidelines in Terms & Conditions, and has been made since 1 January 2014.

- Can I submit artwork that was created for an exam? You cannot submit an artwork made for an examination that hasn’t taken place yet. All coursework and externally set tasks remain the property of the exam board until moderation has taken place and the final marks have been agreed, and should not be viewed by anyone else ahead of that time. You can submit work made for an exam in the past.

How to submit an artwork

- I’ve chosen my work, what do I do next?Go to www.engage.org/GenART to submit your own artwork. Try to add as much information as you can and follow the instructions on the form. Make sure you have read the Terms & Conditions before you submit your work, and don’t forget - you will need an adult to validate your submission.

- How will I know you have received my submission? You will receive a message thanking you for your submission on screen when your artwork has been submitted.

- I’m not sure about submitting my work digitally? Give yourself time - don’t leave it until the last minute! Place your artwork in good light to photograph it and keep the camera steady. Save your photo as a JPG, TIFF or PNG file and check that the file is no bigger than 2MB. Attach your photo to the form. Ask your teacher, workshop leader or someone in the family if you are unsure about file sizes or types.

- My work is a film, how can I submit it?Film or moving image files can be submitted through a link to a film-sharing platform such as Vimeo or YouTube. Do not try to upload a moving image file to the entry form - instead copy the

exact link in to the form. Films should be no longer than 3 minutes long.

I’ve submitted my artwork, what happens next?

- When will I know if my submission has been selected for the Generation ART exhibition? Selection for the exhibition will take place in April 2015. We will email successful applicants to request the original artworks by 30 April 2015. Please see below.

- When will I know if my submission has been selected for the Generation ART digital resource? Selection for the digital resource will take place in April 2015. If your artwork is selected to be included in the digital resource, but not the touring exhibition, we will let you know by 30 April 2015. We may ask you to send us further information or a higher quality digital image. You will not need to send us the artwork in the post.

All of the artists in the exhibition - and adult entrants who submitted their work - will be invited to attend a celebratory event, details of which are to be confirmed.

- What is the best way to keep up to date with latest news on Generation ART?  Everyone can connect with Generation ART on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GenerationARTYoungArtistsOnTour. If you prefer to use Twitter or Instagram you can use the hashtag #GenART_Tour to see updates and images relating to the exhibition.

What happens if my artwork is selected for the exhibition?

- If my artwork is selected for the Generation ART exhibition, will I be responsible for framing or presenting it? No. Selected artists will only be responsible for safely sending their unframed artwork to Generation ART, who will frame and present the works for exhibition. You will need to send your work by post to an address in London - please think about how you will be able to package your work safely before you submit it.

Work selected for exhibition which cannot be posted e.g. sculpture or other fragile or bulky work may be transported and returned by Generation ART. We will contact selected exhibitors to organise transport.

- If my artwork is selected, do I have to pay the postage to send it? Yes, the cost of postage of selected artworks is the responsibility of the applicant. However the cost of all transport whilst part of the exhibition, and return postage of artworks if required will be covered by Generation ART.

- I am not sure about the best way to post my artwork? If your work is selected for the exhibition, we will send you through some general guidelines about best ways to package and post your work so it arrives safely.

- If my artwork is selected for the exhibition, will it be returned? Yes - but make sure you specify this on your submission form. Selected artworks will tour with the Generation ART exhibition until May 2016. If requested artworks will be returned unframed and by post in June 2016.

How else can I get involved?

If you are from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland we would also encourage you to get involved with Children’s Art Week, a UK-wide programme encouraging children, young people, families and teachers to engage with the visual arts,

which will take place later this year from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 June. Further information is available at www.childrensartweek.org.
