1. Purpose of the missionThe STSM took place at the Institute for Architecture Design, Arts and Theorie (EKUT) of the

Karlsruhe Institute for Technology. It will continue previous endeavours of the applicant in digital preservation of 20th century heritage. As such, following activities are envisaged:

- cooperation with the Southwest German archive of architecture and engineering, led by Prof. Dr. Georg Vrachliotis, a colleague of the host

- cooperation with the Centre for Applied Cultural Science - Centre for digital tradition (CODIGT) Dr. Ralf Schneider.

Both envisage possibilities of archiving models of buildings from the archive, currently existing in physical form or as software models from earlier versions of the software.

- continuation of the work with the host, Dipl.-Ing. Alex Dill on encyclopedic assessment of 20th century heritage, started during the ESF network NeDiMAH which led to a publication. As such, the encyclopedia of conservation from Mendrisio, to which the host has contacts, will be browsed to check for which buildings for which there is already a photographic archive of the author (as of the mentioned publication) restoration activities have been assessed. The same browsing will see the overlapping between the archives mentioned above.

It is envisaged to end with a publication. One is already under review to be presented before the mission in Romania.

2. Works performed during the STSM

- research1. Review process

Case studies (for WG3, see the attached tables for more criteria and details, they were not included for copyright reasons):

1. industrial areal in Darmstadt. (conversion)

The former administration and industrial building are integrated in a housing and office complex in original way, as the other buildings are new. Building and restoration was conducted by the office Kramm et Strigl. The industrial building was built 1920. The redesign of the area happened 1999 under the name Bürgerparkviertel (quartier of people park).

2. Facade of the ECC Mall in Karlsruhe (conversion and replacement of elements)

When the shopping mall was built, a number of buildings were demolished. However the monument listed facade of the former chamber theatre had to be kept in the new facade design done by Kramm et Strigl. The new facade of the shopping mall is a media facade. The project is from 2000 and got a 1st prize.

3. ZKM (Centre for Art and Media), Karlsruhe (conversion)

The building is the core of the development in that area of the city, followed by the School of Art and Media, and the Film Palace, and the company 1 &1 among othersIt was previously a munition building during the war, architect Philipp Jacob Manz. The conversion took place 1997. The garden spaces in the front are by landscape architect Dieter Kienast. The architects of the conversion were Schweger and Partner.A collection of previous photos can be found in the exhibition itself.

4. State theatre Darmstadt (classical restoration)

Restoration by office Lederer 2010 of the postwar building of Rudolf Prange (1972) - competition 1963

5. Dammerstock washing salon, Karlsruhe (conversion)

This is part of a neighbourhood of the modern movement. The neighbourhood was built following a competition from 1928, on which Walter Gropius and Otto Haesler took part among others. The washing salon is of Otto Haessler, a remarkable architect for the use of steel in housing. The redesign with change of function to an architecture office was done by the architects Rossmann and partner.A collection of previous photos can be found in the Bauhaus archive.

6. St. Stephan church, Karlsruhe (replacement of elements)

Urbanistically the church influenced the building of the Library of Baden on the opposite side, the competition drawings of Aldo Rossi study the shape of the church. Columns and cupola are inspired also in the winning project by it.The church was built 1808-1814 by the architect of the city Friedrich Weinbrenner. The church was partially destroyed in 1944 in bombardments. After that the cupola was replaced by a reinforced concrete one (1951-55).A collection of previous photos can be found in the land archive of Baden Württemberg.

7. Stephanien bath, Karlsruhe (conversion)

The building is in the vicinity of the Alb river and the railway and well integrated.Originally it was bathing building by Friedrich Weinbrenner, the architect of the city, as the area is rich in thermal water.

8. Heidelberg old bath (conversion)

The building is on the way from the railway station to the old city, and includes a passage connecting two opposite streets. The building used to be a public bath in Art Nouveau style from 1906. It was closed 1981. 1989 it was tried to renovate, but for financial reasons it was not possible. It was transformed in restaurant use in 2013.

9. Student dormitory, Karlsruhe (conversion)

The building is part of the campus, together with some offices in the historic building of the hospital. The building was originally student dormitory, then belonged to a children hospialt and now it is student dormitory again. The other buildings of the children hospital were converted as well, to the international students offices.

10. Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt (conversion)

This is a neighbourhood of Art Nouveau which is a candidate for UNESCO. Some of the buildings became museumsThe artist colony was active 1899-1914. Some of the houses ateliers are designed by star architects of the time (ex. Peter Behrens)The conversion was done by Städtisches Hochbauamt and Christiane Geelhaar.

11. Architecture building on Karlsruhe Institute of Technology campus (replacement of elements)

The building is part of a campus which is integrated in the forest which shaped the north of KarlsruheThe university of Karlsruhe started as the School of Architecture of Friedrich Weinbrenner around 1800. The building of the Faculty of Architecture was built 1898 by Josef Durm in Gründerzeit style with Art Nouveau influences. It held the name Aula building because of the beautiful aula, destroyed by a bomb 1944. In its place 1960s architecture came. 2011 the building was restored with a new energy concept for the Atrium.

12. Mathematics building on Karlsruhe Institute of Technology campus (replacement of elements)

The building is part of a campus which is integrated in the forest which shaped the north of Karlsruhe. The building of the faculty of mathematics was a 1960s postwar building like many in the campus, some of which (chemistry) are protected. But it featured hazardous materials (asbest among others) for which reason a special approach was needed to remove those structural parts and in the process the building grew to twice surface and developed an energy facade. It won a prize for dealing with postwar substance in university milieu (ingenhoven architects, the architects of the Stuttgart 21 railstation).A collection of previous photos can be found in the city archive of Karlsruhe.

13. Castle in Bruchsal (replacement of missing parts)

The building is accompanied by a garden and is headquarters of State Castles and Gardens Baden-Württemberg.The building was damaged in WWII as a consequence of Bruchsal being an important railway station and rebuilt. Especially important is the staircase by Balthasar Neumann, one of the most important in Baroque (along with the one in Würzburg). The decoration of the windows was only painted and was not reconstructed as such. It is an example of post WWII reconstruction typical for Germany.A collection of previous photos can be found in the exhibition itself.

- Integration in WG3 work (information compiled by the WG leaders)

The topics the grantee subscribed to contribute in the WG:

Topic 3.A2 Conservation work on damaged parts of HBsObjective: - Use of appropriate conservation materials that match well aesthetically and technologically with preserved parts of HBs and its surroundings and that ensure adequate reversibility of the intervention performed. Case study: state theatre DarmstadtThe Mendrisio archive (next point)

Topic 3.A3 Replacement / reconstruction of missing parts on HBsObjective: It includes modern and invasive materials (artistic or/and political gesture, etc.) that might make the restored part a “piece of art”Case studies as marked for replacement

Topic 3.A4 Re-use / retrofitting of HBs & sitesObjective: - Retrofitting principles - extension of interventions (MBO),- Advanced engineering materials issueCase studies as marked for conversion

The interventions in the case studies considered are considering advanced materials of the 20th century such as reinforced concrete in the reconstruction (for St. Stephan church or the Bruchsal castle, or the architecture faculty) or even advanced materials of the time in construction (Dammerstock, ZKM). In case of the mathematics faculty hazardous once modern materials have been replaced.

Regarding illumination of HB in case of the EC centre it is a permanent one, while the castle in Bruchsal is illuminated on occasions (for example Christmas).

Regarding the other related surroundings topic of change of the function of surroundings, in case of the ZKM the whole areal changed from industrial to high tech, and in Bruchsal from private residence to museum. In case of the former hospital the whole areal changed to be included in the neighbouring campus. The Dammerstock and the Mathildenhöhe and the Schlachthof Darmstadt are part of housing neighbourhoods now and in the first cases also then, but the user needs upgraded. The campus is to be seen as an urban area as well. Some of the Mendrisio cases are urban neighbourhoods as well, such as the Speicherstadt Hamburg or the Olympia park and Guell park Münich.

After discussion with the WG3 leader Christian Degrigny the case studies to be included in the form remained:

8. Centre for Art and Media, Karlsruhe9. Castle in Bruchsal10. Faculty of Architecture, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

For these detailed discussions were conducted with Klaus Nippert and Henrike von Werder.

2. Setting up comparative analyses

The case studies were compared among themselves and with the examples from Romania. For Romania there are following examples:

1. Dealu Frumos church (conversion)2. The Ark industrial building, Bucharest (conversion)3. Former Gabroveni inn, Bucharest (conversion and replacement of elements)4. Headquarters of the Union of Architects, Bucharest (conversion and replacement of

elements)5. Wilson block of flats, Bucharest (replacement of elements)

Comparisons were made differently for replacement of elements and for conversion respectively.

Comparisons could be made for:- Industrial buildings conversion- Churches conversion- Thermal bath conversion- 20th century housing- University buildings- Unitary quarters

These comparisons were made also to the ideal projects presented in the presentation.

3. Comparison of the photographic archive to the Mendrisio case studies

The study permitted seeing conservation approaches for buildings for which the documentation was already gathered.2 of these case studies are in Germany.

Cross country comparison was also possible for these, namely regarding for example the issue of authenticity in reconstruction, industrial buildings, or upgrading the original functions.

Similarly will be proceeded with the database on landscape from the Le Notre reports.

The monument list of the city of Karlsruhe was available, and the laws on monument protection in Germany were consulted, among others through cooperation with castle Bruchsal staff.

- teaching

Teaching is an issue which as a researcher is not accessed at the home university. Nevertheless, the lecture presented the experience in teaching “Protection of localities against risks” at the home university as well as the network online reviewer for New York. Some of the building typologies from New York appear in the case studies. It is to be thought to extend in a publication the teaching experience as done and as presented in the lecture.

The seminar “Lifestyle” had the following topics:- Week 1 subdivision of lectures by students, pin up of the 3 home exercises (a found object on

lifestyle, what is architecture – wondering, something for the future – perception) - Week 2 pin up of the posters by students (dadailos, the flyer), lecture by the host- Week 3 lecture by the grantee, lecture by the host continuation of art nouveau and modernism

scenes, pin up of posters “architecture meets everyone”- Week 4 visit to furniture factory FA Feederer, one of the sponsors of the conference- Week 5 round table on the topic “Illusions”

The topic of the project was to design an ideal kindergarten in parallel with an intervention to idealise an existing kindergarten (Santa Klara). The project supervision had the following topics:- Week 1 general discussion on nickname of the kindergarten, logos etc. as well as on the

concept of garden for children- Week 2 pinup of posters of clothing inspired by the nick name of the kindergarten- Week 3 pinup of posters on how to configure eating and sleeping in the kindergarten- Week 4 individual corrections on plans- Week 5 individual corrections on plans (pin up 15 december)

Two kindergartens were visited: Santa Klara (heritage building) and Sankt Georg (recent building, 2014). Both belong to Karlsruhe south west, parish St. Nicolas (catholic kindergartens), in the vicinity of two of the case studies.

4. Results

I am a graduate in architecture (1999) of the University of Karlsruhe, today Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Mr. Alex Dill was assistant to my diploma professor. In 2004 Mr. Alex Dill started a series of conferences to the preservation of the buildings of the Modern Movement, and later became member of the board and chair of DOCOMOMO (the Association for documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement) Germany. We already cooperated in this context with two reciprocical short visits in frame of the ESF Network for Digital Methods in Arts and Humanities, which resulted in a number of publications. One of these publications is an authored book gathering together the buildings, sites and neighbourhoods visited by the applicant across Europe. It includes introductory essays, vita of the architects, list of

works, and the literature on which basis this was made. A step further would be that in the direction of the conference, which is how to conserve this heritage, or how to intervene on it.During this STSM we worked on a second book of this type. This second book includes reports on integrations of buildings in landscapes, as travel log, with maps and links to further photos like in the previous books, and it is envisaged to have a first part on the conference which this year will be about landscape. The conference will be co-organised with Prof. Henri Bava, my diploma co-referent and landscape professor, and at whom I will start the habilitation. Hence, instead of doctorate summary the book can include a habilitation summary. The conference will feature as partner the home university and the Le Notre Institute, represented by a teacher from Nürtingen, where also the COST action TU1401 is chaired. Several meetings to organise the conference took place. An application has been filled to the Marie Curie Alumni association to sponsor the book and another one for the travel to the conference in February.

During a second book from the NeDiMAH network the applicant came to cooperation with the Centre for Applied Cultural Science. This has a unique centre for the field, namely the Centre of Digital Tradition (CODIGT) led by a former research assistant colleague from the time in Karlsruhe (Dr. Ralf Schneider). Karlsruhe as location is unique for digital tradition, featuring the Centre for Art and Media, a museum for this kind of art. Apart of Ralf Schneider cooperation continued with the authors in the book, Dr. Jesus Munoz and Dr. Florian Faion, and their heads of department.

The two initiatives are connected through the South-West German Archive for Architecture and Engineering. Some of the emblematic sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement are in South-West Germany, for example the Dammerstock Siedlung in Karlsruhe, but also sites of the Werkbund like the Weissenhof Siedlung in Stuttgart. They were restored in recent time, and the visit to the restoration sites was part of the conferences held. This restoration will be put in the context of the Encyclopedia of Conservation of the Modern Movement, an initiative of the University of Mendrisio, Switzerland, which was also presented at the conference and to which thus connections of Mr. Dill exist. Prof. Georg Vrachliotis is the head of the South-West German Archive for Architecture and Engineering and a colleague at the same institute (Design, Arts and Theory – EKUT) of Mr. Dill (they lead different chairs in the institute). Prof. Vrachliotis did his PhD at the ETH Zürich where a strong group exists on digital landscape architecture. This enhances the importance of dealing with neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement (as in WG3 and 4). Karlsruhe is relevant for dealing with neighbourhoods since the central of the State Parks and Castles of South West Germany is also located in Bruchsal, near Karlsruhe, and the head of it, Prof. Hartmut Troll, who was visited. The South-West German Archive for Architecture and Engineering organised during the time of the stay in Karlsruhe the exhibition „Frei Otto. Thinking in Models”, which was visited 3 times, twice with guided tour.Apart of the South-West German Archive also the archives of the university were consulted for the 3 case studies on the campus.

The goal was thus to extend the database of the documentation of the Modern Movement experienced by the author (the book is a further output of the doctoral research which dealt with cross country comparison of intervention on early 20th century buildings) with conservation approaches on site or digitally. For the latter the way data is preserved in the archive will be

studied – models in physical space, models on digital media and a concept developed. This could lead to further cooperation and project applications in the field. At the university archive the possibility for a future project in the field of stereo photography emerged. The archive has a collection of glass plates with such images of monuments for which a model for a 3D digital model should be developed. But also in the field of e-installation with Dr. Florian Munoz and Dr. Jesus Morcillo there are further possibilities of digital cooperation.

Regarding participation to teaching every Tuesday was seminar, with the title Lifestyle reflection in architecture and every Thursday project. At the seminar the scenes of the 20th century were analysed. The seminar included also a lecture held by myself on architecture teaching in Bucharest, Rome and New York. The New York teaching is a network project including also the design review of thermal bathes and university buildings, relevant for the case studies considered. On Rome the lecture included art academies, in the same context. For Bucharest the teaching envisages disaster resilience and is relevant for the habilitation. The project was on the ideal Kindergarten starting from an existing one, Santa Klara. The site of the Kindergarten was visited. A concept discussion was that of garden reflection. In the final week there was a round table on the topics.

Presentation of results is foreseen at the Argument conference and journal and at the INCD Urban Incerc conference. Also the JULP review is a possibility to publish. The topics will be as follows:- the topic of the lecture for JULP (teaching experiences, including Karlsruhe)- the cross country comparison of the results for Argument- presentation of the whole at INCD

Both Argument and INCD are taking place in April-May 2017.Already presented from the cooperation was a paper on Werkbund in Romania in September. We received the invitation to publish and extended version and worked on it.

In Karlsruhe I attended a number of events, to be highlighted is the Alumni meeting, the Wissenschaftsgespräche on going digital and the Schelling prize award. The related exhibitions were visited.

The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has a programme for its international alumni who continued their career abroad integrating them in a database (iForscher). The international department is conducting initiatives to integrate foreign researchers such as get together and excursions. Excursions are essential in the field of architecture and will be attended. Thus, the cooperation felt into a wider frame. The excursion this month was to the ZKM, but there was also an excursion to Esslingen. The international department also organised a round table and a Christmas party.

The home university has an Erasmus cooperation building on the earlier Tempus cooperation from the 1990s with the host university. Mr. Dill was invited to teach at the home university a couple of times. Thus outputs will return to the home university. The applicant is research assistant at the home university and thus does not teach, hence this initiative will be welcome to increase her teaching skills (as she has a pedagogy certificate) and to present at the home university.

A visit to Heidelberg took place, but unfortunately the publishing editor Dr. Robert Doe was not present. However, the work towards the habilitation will flow into a book it is worked on on destruction – the impact of catastrophes on architecture.

Progress towards the work plan objectives:1. Research on digital born dataa. Attendance of the Beyond Festival at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe – not possible because the time was changed and the festival already took place. However, the alumni meeting in cooperation with the ZKM was attended instead, which featured architecture with campus tours, vernisage of the Grafitti database exhibition, lectures on digital art such as Olafur Elisasson and the ZKM Frei Otto exhibition.b. Visit of the digital exhibitions at the Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe – self standing, in frame of the alumni meeting and in frame of the international department excursionc. Presentation of the book on former initiative in the library of the university – not possible, the publishing editor was not there2. Archive researcha. Research on the structuring of the data at the South German Archive for Architecture and Engineering – the research was done in cooperation with the archive of the university with exchange on stereo photography of monumentsb. Research on available data (plans, models) on the experienced sites by the author, particularly sites and neighbourhoods (WG3 and WG4 where the applicant is member of) – see case studiesc. Site visits of other sites available in the archive – see case studiesd. Report for the archive and Centre for Applied Cultural Science on possible digital approaches to the data – numerous encounters with members of the centre, attendance of events3. Encyclopedia researcha. Research on available data for conservation endeavours for the buildings first hand experienced by the author – see reportb. Organisation of conservation approaches by technology – cross country comparisonsc. Report to the COST action WG3 on conservation approaches for the given buildings – completion of the tabled. Publication outline and preparation – publication plane. Visit to Heidelberg, to the publishing editor – instead a case study was chosen4. Teachinga. Teaching at the Centre for Applied Cultural Science on digital methods for cultural heritage (block seminar) – refused, instead teaching at the project of Mr. Dill on existing building – ideal building relationship, relevant for WG3b. Participation to teaching at the seminar of Mr. Dill – including lecture and round tablec. Preparation of the teaching lectures of Mr. Dill in Romania – preparation of the conference in partnership with the home institution5. Further cooperationa. Preparation of a further research project – preparation of the habilitationb. Participation to the initiatives of the International Department (get together, excursion) – as describedc.
