WADDEN SEA DAYS. THE FIRST DECADE

Background

The first “Wadden Sea Day” was held on 31 August 2006 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Wadden Sea National Park of Lower Saxony. In that year joint activities between partners of the National Park Administration were conducted. On a trilateral level an international workshop was jointly organized by the Common Wadden Sea Secretariat and the Lower Saxonian National Park Administration, addressing the theme “Seriously declining trends in migratory waterbirds. Causes – Concerns – Consequences.” (see Wadden Sea Ecosystem No. 23, 2007). In 2007 the term “Wadden Sea Day” was coined as a consequence of this successful first workshop.

In the following years such events were continually organised, always on the last Thursday of August. The themes were selected by the CWSS and the NPA on the basis of their interest for Wadden Sea conservation and management, as well as topicality. All events were jointly organised by the CWSS and the NPA with changing lead organizations. All WSDs were held in the Wattenmeerhaus in Wilhelmshaven with the exception of the WSD 2014, which took place in the Columbia Hotel.

Annex 1 provides an overview of Wadden Sea Days and themes, as well as the full programmes.

Interest and Impact

The interest in the Wadden Sea Days has been high throughout the past ten years. On average some 100 persons participated. The Wadden Sea Day 2014, dedicated to the farewell of Jens Enemark, was exceptional in that more than 200 persons were present.

Depending on the subject discussed, the WSDs have had considerable impact and positive side-effects, as well as good press coverage.

The first and second WSDs, for example, have delivered important input to the 2009 Quality Status Report. The 2010 WSD, dedicated to alien species management, was the start of the work on a trilateral alien species strategy, while the 2011 WSD, addressing fish conservation issues, gave impetus to the implementation of the trilateral Fish Targets.

Financing

The Wadden Sea Days have been financed by either the CWSS or the NPA. Support was also received from the German federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUB) and/or the Lower Saxonian Environment Ministry. The average budget was some 2500 Euros. The 2014 WSD had a special budget of 25.000 Euros.
