WHAT’S HAPPENING AT MLC?

Have a Band Instrument You Can Donate? - Shalom! My name is Zack Long and my Bar Mitzvah is on November 2nd, Parsha Noach. For my Mitzvah project, I’m collecting donations of band instruments for children who can’t afford to rent or purchase their own. I’m looking for otherwise unwanted clarinets, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, snare drums, etc. I’m working with Tim’s Music in Carmichael, and Kline Music in Land Park to match the instruments to kids in need. The instruments don’t have to be perfect as Tim’s and Kline’s will get them in working order if necessary. If you have an instrument you’d like to donate, please email me at [email protected] you have an old instrument collecting dust on a shelf, why not give the tax-deductible gift of music to a student who might not otherwise be able to play? Where words fail, music speaks…

MLC Program in KOH: Conversational Hebrew Course with Gail Rubin - Come be a part of the miraculous revival of Hebrew as a spoken language! Tuesdays, November 5 through December 10 at 7pm. Hebrew is a language both ancient and modern. With an unbroken literary tradition going back more the 3,000 years, it is the premier example of a classical language revived as the living language of a world community. Why not reap all the benefits of having command of a second language, particularly one that connects us so strongly to our collective past and future?Develop your Hebrew skills in a relaxed and supportive environment. The only course prerequisite is the ability to read Hebrew letters and vowels. When registering please note your skill level for Hebrew writing in print &/or in script. You will be offered an opportunity to learn and practice writing before the classes begin. After 6 weeks you will know how to say about 60 phrases in modern Hebrew. Tuition - $18 (Paid directly to the MLC Education Fund). Course materials available through Amazon (approximately $32). To register contact Kate Pidwerbecki at [email protected] or 916.488.1122.

KOH Film Club: Denial - Sunday, November 3 at 2pm. “As flat-earthery returns to the world, this drama about a historian’s pursual through the UK justice system by a Holocaust denier is refreshing and very pertinent.” - The Guardian. Based on the acclaimed book History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier, DENIAL recounts Deborah E. Lipstadt’s (Academy Award (R) winner Rachel Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against David Irving (Cannes Award Winner Timothy Spall), who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. In the English legal system, the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt and her legal team to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred. Following the documentary there will be a discussion. There is a $5 suggested donation. For more information and to RSVP please contact Mehrnaz Halimi at [email protected] or 916-508-4571.

KOH Book Club Discussion Group: The Diamond Setter by Moshe Sakal - Wednesday, November 20 at 1:30pm. Inspired by true events, this best-selling Israeli novel traces a complex web of love triangles, homoerotic tensions, and family secrets across generations and borders, illuminating diverse facets of life in the Middle East. The uneventful life of a jeweler from Tel Aviv changes abruptly in 2011 after Fareed, a handsome young man from Damascus, crosses illegally into Israel and makes his way to the ancient port city of Jaffa in search of his roots. In his pocket is a piece of a famous blue diamond known as “Sabakh.” Intending to return the diamond to its rightful owner, Fareed is soon swept up in Tel Aviv’s vibrant gay scene, and a turbulent protest movement. He falls in love with both an Israeli soldier and his boyfriend--the narrator of this book--and reveals the story of his family’s past: a tale of forbidden love beginning in the 1930s that connects Fareed and the jeweler.Following Sabakh’s winding path, The Diamond Setter ties present-day events to a forgotten time before the establishment of the State of Israel divided the region. Moshe Sakal’s poignant mosaic of characters, locales, and cultures encourages us to see the Middle East beyond its violent conflicts.Everyone is welcome, including drop-ins. For more information contact Valla Hoffman at 916-743-8247 or [email protected].
