Pioneer John Davi s Callaghan

John Davis Callaghan and Margaret Hutc hison were married in 1792 in Bath county, VA, and moved to Ohio in 1811 . They first settled in Ross county, but finding the area too wet, they moved in 1812 to Jackson county and located on land southeast of Jackson, near Madison Furnace. It is said they were heading for the Dayton area but met families fleeing that area due to Cholera so they stopped in Ross county. The current Madis on Furnace- Callaghan graveyard , in the Cooper Holl ow Wildlife Area, i s located on the edge of the old homestead, par t of the graveyard being d onated by the McLaughlin fami l y. John and Margaret had eight children. In order of birth they were : Jeremiah Riley Callahan, John Dav is Callahan, Jr, William Oliver Hutchison Callaghan, Mary Ann Callaghan, Sarah Bird Cal laghan , Benjamin Franklin Callaghan, Owen George Callahan and Jane Cal l aghan. Many descendants still live in Jackson county .

Family records indicate that Jeremiah fought in the Wa r of 1812 a nd was given a Parole of Honor by General McArthur, a fter he surrendered his Army in Canada, although no record can be found on the official ro lls. Jeremiah left home a nd traveled to Kentucky, near Lexington, where he married Harrie t Leach in the mid/late 1820's. They moved to Indiana in 1832 and southern Iowa in 1854 where they are buried. John, Jr first married Elizabeth James. Afte r her death he married Susanna Cury and remained i n Jackson county. He died in 1852 during a trip to Indiana. William D.H . mar ried Ma rtha Hanna and they are buried in Jackson county . Mary Ann married John S Ri dgway. They went west and settled in Bates county, MD, whe re they are buried. Sarah Bird married Gabr i e l Keaton. They went west and died and are buried on the "Gran d Prairies" in IL. Benjamin married Nancy A McClure and remained in Jackson county where they are bu ried. Owen married Martha Poor . They went west and settled in Bates county , MO, where they are buried. Jane married John F Foughty. No record has been found of them i n Jackson county so the must have also went west? No r ecord of the i r bra nch has been located to date.

Family history indicates that Jeremiah and Harriet, with their 12 chi ld ren, traveled by covered wagon from Indiana, in 1854, to Colorado. Not liking Colorado, they retUrned to southern Iowa, Lucas county, the same y ear and settled about 4 miles west of Chari ton , the county seat . The picture is of Harriet (Leach) Callahan, Jeremiah's wife , (my g r eat grandmother) taken in Lucas county prior to her death . Lucas county is a farming county and d u ring the lat e 1800's/early 1900 ' s some shallow sof t coal was mined •

Jeremiah and Harriet's youngest son was Asa Nay Callahan. He married Margaret J Vincent and they had 7 children. Their youngest son was John Asa Callahan. He married Ellen Agnes Johnson and they had two children. I am their Cal lahan. I married Mary Kathryn Combs and daughters.
