nvSRAM Solution for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Cypress’s nvSRAM is the Most Reliable and Fastest Asynchronous Nonvolatile RAM Solution
Presentation: To provide an engineering overview to customers for a Cypress solutionTitle slide: To define what the presentation will cover. The subtitle is a short sentence stating the key opportunity..
001-91842 Owner: MRANRev *D Engineering Presentation Tech lead: EWOO
The market for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) is expected to grow from 9 million units in 2013 to 15 million units in 20171
PLC customers are demanding enhanced features:Precise multi-axis motion control
High-speed acquisition and processing of sensor data
Reliable safety systems
Improved energy management
PLCs require fast and high-reliability nonvolatile random access memories (NVRAMs) to store critical data reliably on power loss
Battery-Backed SRAMs require batteries that increase maintenance costs, reduce reliability and violate RoHS regulations
nvSRAM offers the industry’s fastest, battery-free, high-reliability NVRAM solution for PLCs

Terms You Will Hear TodayProgrammable Logic Controller (PLC)A digital computer used to control industrial automation equipment or machinery
Silicon Oxide Nitride Oxide Silicon (SONOS) Transistor A transistor with a polysilicon gate (S), an Oxide Nitride Oxide (ONO) gate dielectric and a Silicon substrate (S) used to create
a nonvolatile memory storage cell
Nonvolatile Static Random Access Memory (nvSRAM)Fast SRAM memory with a SONOS nonvolatile memory cell embedded in each SRAM cell to store data reliably on power loss
Battery-Backed SRAM (BBSRAM)SRAM connected to a battery to store data on power loss
Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM)A nonvolatile random access memory that uses the magnetism of electron spin to store data
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)A European Union directive intended to eliminate the use of environmentally hazardous material in electronic components
Open NAND Flash Interface (ONFI) StandardAn open interface standard that assures the compatibility and interoperability of NAND devices from different vendors
4Terms of Art (ToA): To clearly define for engineers all ToAs used in the presentation. To carefully and fully define Cypress-proprietary ToAs needed to explain our system solution.

1. PLCs require high-reliability nonvolatile random access memories (NVRAMs) Using BBSRAMs as NVRAMs requires battery backup to store data on power loss
Using MRAMs as NVRAMs risks data corruption by magnetic fields generated by motors and solenoids
2. BBSRAM solutions force undesirable tradeoffsBatteries consume board space and require a power-management controller, increasing system cost and complexity
Coin-cell batteries have a three-year lifetime, which adds cost by requiring system maintenance and downtime
Data is lost if the battery charge is drained before system power is restored, so repairs must be made quickly
Batteries contain heavy metals that violate RoHS regulations
3. PLC designers need NVRAMs with fast access times and flexible interface optionsLow-power asynchronous SRAMs have fast access times (45 ns) but require battery backup to store data on power loss
Most NVRAMs do not offer an ONFI Standard interface, making them incompatible with many systems
Cypress’s nvSRAM solves all these problemsStores data reliably on power loss without batteries, even in magnetic fields
Eliminates the need for an external power-management controller
Meets RoHS regulations
Provides access times as fast as 20 ns
Offers both high-speed asynchronous parallel and ONFI Standard 1.0-compatible interfaces
