1 GUIDELINE FOR EXPLOSION PROOF COMPONENTS FORGRASSO PISTON COMPRESSORS & PACKAGES

1.1 Guideline for explosion proof com-ponents for Grasso piston compres-sors & packagesl

The new called ATEX (Atmosphres Explosibles)guideline (Directive 94/9/EC) for explosion proof components was put into force on 30th June 2003.For Grasso manufacturing and Product Selling Com-panies the following categories are of importanceaccording to the specific requirement:

    A. Electrical components

    B. Mechanical components which can generatesparking during operation or standstill. \

    C. All other components or constructio ns wheresurface temperatures can be higher than thatpermitted according the requested specification.

    D. Risk analysis for components where no ATEXcertificate is available.

    General r emarks

    1. Customers (contractors) who have a request for a compressor (package) in EX execution must

be able to present the complete EX specifica-tion with which it has to comply before Grasso isable to make an offer.

    Caution!

Grasso cannot be responsible for thecorrect classification of the system onsite. This is reserved for approved/qualified organizations and local rules.

    2. An EX explosion proof request has always tobe handled as custom built due to the variety of

possible specifications (See page 3).3. The contractor is always the responsible party

for the system supplied to the end user.

    4. Grasso can only supply EX components whichare available as standard on the market and aresupplied with an ATEX certificate.(exceptions are the so called Grasso madecomponents such as coupling and v-belt driveguards as well as the judgement of surface tem-peratures of the relevant components. They willbe accompanied by a risk analyses made byGrasso)

    5. Electrical wiring of the EX components to a cen-

tral terminal box and interconnecting wiring arenormally not performed by Grasso but are theresponsibility of the contractor.

    6. If Grasso Products BV can only partly complywith the required specifications the customer should be correctly informed to prevent misun-derstanding during the order process.

    Caution!

Based on the above remarks GrassoProducts BV. cannot supply an over-all certificate for the entire compres-sor system but only for individualcomponents integrated therein.

Piston compressor/package components subjectto the ATEX Directive (94/9/EC)

    1. Electrical componentsCompressor:- Capacity control valves- Crankcase heater - Oil level switch

    - Electromagnetic stop valves- Electromagnetic injection valves- Discharge temperature protection- Pressure switches- Pressure and Temperature sensors- Control system (Monitron/GSC)Package:- Electric motor compressor - Electric motor oil cooler fan- Electro magnetic stop valves (oil return, econo-mizer)- Oil return thermostat

    2. Mechanical componentsCompressor:- Drive shaft / shaft sealPackage:- Coupling and guard- Flywheel, pulley, v-belts and guard- Oil cooler fan

    3. Critical temperatures on surfaces ( others than Aand B)Depending on the required temperature classT1-T6 the following components should be takeninto consideration:Compressor:- Cylinder housings and covers- Discharge gas manifolds- Economizer shellPackage:- Discharge stop valve(s)- Discharge line(s) to oil separator(s)- Oil separator(s)- Oil return line to compressor

T1/T2/T3 temperature classifications are normallynot a problem since the allowable surface tempera-ture at T3 class is max. 200 C. If however tempera-

ture class T4 (max. 135 C) is required an analysismust be made of the maximum surface temperatureoccurring during full load and part load running con-ditions of the selected compressor.

    Hint!

It can happen that one or more compo-nents, as mentioned above, cannot besupplied according the specificationas stated by the customer. In that caseGrasso has to reject this project if noother solution can be found

All EX components must comply with the newdirective: 94/9/EC - ATEX and ordered with the cor-rect ATEX certificate. The old type of certificationmust not be accepted !
