A Little Bit More about Me
More Background
My specialty is in semiconductor, but most of my recent activitiesare not in the technical area
I was once a qualified CFA (with a master degree in Finance) I am managing some venture capital and investment in tech
companies
I have been doing corporate training in creativity and management I have also found some companies and the most recent one is a
game/education business
I am one of the founding members of the Hong Kong Board GameDesigner Association
I also have professional certificates in graphic design You are welcome to talk to me in any subjects beyond the class

Pre-requisite
Chemistry
Actually you do not need to take any chemistry from theuniversity
As long as you know the periodic table and atomicstructure is good enough
ELEC2400 It is the planned pre-requisite in the final 4-year program In the transition, ELEC2410 was offer instead and it can be
used to replace ELEC2400

Philosophy of ELEC3500 [1]
Learn to study SMART, not study hard 50% versus 90% knowledge qualitative rather than quantitative Overview versus details most important, develop common sense (which is
usually not common)
Learning concept Many things can be learnt, but not taughtAdvanced versus fundamental knowledge knowledge vs application of knowledge thinking vs memorizationActive learning: you have to ask a lot of questions

Problem with conventional teaching
Current education system was developed in the industrialrevolution and does not evolve to the information era
Teaching knowledge, but not how to apply the knowledge Obedience is more important than creativity School never tells students that the taught knowledge may
become obsolete upon graduation
Question 3 months after taking a class, how much material can
you still recall?
Conclusion
I dont expect you can remember what you learned in this class Remembering them is useless anyway because they will
become obsolete in 3-5 years

What should be your focus in this class then?
The language used for the subject so that you can talk likean expert
Make approximate guesses rather than exact calculation Know where to find the require information when needed
Understand that you need to learn something new every3-5 years
Relax and get the big picture first before going to the detailsEngineering Approach
Solving a problem with approximate rather than perfect solution
If you are given a poor invention, you can make a poor productthat works half the time and sell at half the price

Difference between Scientist and Engineer
Scientists focus on perfect knowledge Engineers focus on applications and efficient solution
Science is mostly a bottom approach, start from aphenomena and look for application
Engineering is supposed to be a top down approachstarting with a problem and look for THE MOSTEFFICIENT solution
Example How do you prove f(x)=g(x) if you are a mathematician? What would you do if you are an engineer?
Engineer
BusinessmenScientists- Work with people
- topdown
- response
- Work with objects
- bottomup
- knowledge

What do I expect from you
learn to be an engineer (decision maker), not a technician(machine operator)
communicate well with me or your TAs about your difficultyfocus on the learning rather than the grade (or you will bevery frustrated)
If something is beyond your ability, take it as a blackboxand understand the input and output
Enjoy the classWhat do you expect from this class you better tell meBest strategy to take the class going for a C and get a C ! (for undergraduate) going for a B and get a B (for post-graduate)

Laboratory There are only 4 labs, and take place approximately once
every two-three weeks One labs will be in NFF and some other labs in Room 3121 One sub-grade will be deducted for missing any of the
above labs
Tutorial mainly for discussion of HW and Laboratories provide examples to the concepts covered in the lectures provide a different perspective to the material covered

General Approach
The class is designed to be the last class in thesemiconductor area (not to prepare you for another class)
Try to train you to make guesses and quick decision

Final Exam not testing your knowledge, but how you apply your
knowledge
interview and IQ test like (85% thinking, 15% writing) you may bring along almost anything during exams
ansunnsunHong Kong University of Science & Technology, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
Homework
encourage discussion, thinking and self-learning solutions are usually given in the tutorial
discuss with others, seek help from TA or myself do NOT spend >1 hours THINKING about one problemQuizzes
encourage periodic clear up of concept close book, close notes, ~10 minutes with short questions once for every two weeks

I discourage arguing about scores andgrades, but welcome discussion of problems
Approximate grade distribution 10% Homework 24% quizzes 16% Labs 50% final examYou get an automatic A if you score over
80% in the final (and attend the first 2 labs)

Difficulties of the Course
It is a class that require quick thinking, NOT hardwork
No text book for the up-to-date material
Missing lecture(s) is not encouraged
Material built on top of each other, cleaning up
concept after each lecture is a must
A privately quoted comment:- coverage of the course is extensive- reason: whatever not covered in the lecture is covered
in the exam ansunnsunHong Kong University of Science & Technology, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
You may feel that you understand the material, but
you will still be confused during the tests

OBE (Outcome Based Education) Definition
ansunnsunHong Kong University of Science & Technology, Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering
remember the operation of a cleanroom
communicate with the language of semiconductor (diode, BJT,MOSFET, doping, Fermi-level, drift-diffusion etc.
operate a probe-station
describe the basic principles of some common circuit activeelements plus photo active devices (solar cell, LED, CCD)
describe the effects of changing the key physical parametersof diode, BJT and MOSFET on the trend (increase or
decrease) of the output characteristics
match a given model to measurement data by selectingrelevant parameters
Students will be able to
