Trailside Point student recognized at Senate Trailside Point second grader Andrew Capono was recognized by Senator Cathe- rine Miranda on the Senate floor this week for his achievements in the Special Olympics swim competitions. Andrew took the gold med- al in the 50 meter free style at regionals and the silver medal in the 25 meter free style at state. His parents, brother, teacher, and principal all joined him at the State Capi- tol for this special recogni- tion. Students win MLK art, essay contests Three Laveen District students placed in Arizona State University’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. art and essay contest. Vista del Sur students Alan Roy, Grade 8, and Lucas Henderson, Grade 2, took 2nd and 3rd place respectively in their grade level divisions. Trailside Point seventh grader Jorge Jasso took 3rd Place in the poster contest. The winning students and their families were honored at ASU’s annual breakfast celebration. Jorge Jasso’s artwork was posthumously honored by ASU. Jorge unexpectedly passed away just days before the breakfast celebration. Cheatham receives grant Cheatham School is the recipient of a $4,000 Fuel Up to Play 60 grant from the Arizona Dairy Council. The money will be used to support healthy eating, breakfast in the classroom, and physical activities. Laveen recognizes top spellers Laveen held their annual district Spelling Bee on January 14 where the top spellers from each school competed for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. The district winners are: Lindsay Davis (Vista) - 1st Place Kaia Manion (Rogers Ranch) - 2nd Place Nikki Nguyen (Rogers Ranch) - 3rd Place

Desert Meadows hosts Science Night

Desert Meadows recently held a Science

Night for their whole school.

The Arizona Science Center provided

experiments and demonstrations for students of

all grade levels. Mr. Steve Humble even

conducted an astronomy activity using iPods and

tablets; once darkness fell he pointed out the

stars in the sky.

The event also featured games, a hot dog

stand, and treats

p r o v i d e d b y

Scooptacular.

Mea dow s ’ PTA

helped plan this

successful event.

Commemorative storm shirts discounted

The Laveen Education Foundation has only a

few commemorative storm shirts left and are sell-

ing them at a discounted rate.

The navy blue shirts note that the wearer sur-

vived two 1,000—year storms and includes the

dates. The back features a large wave and school

bus.

The remaining shirts are being sold for $10.

Sizes available are medium and large. To pur-

All proceeds benefit the Foundation which

provides scholarships to Laveen school alumni.
