Summer of ‘79Elton John become the first musician from the West to perform live in the Soviet Union; milk went up to 15p a pint; Arsenal beat Manchester United 3-2 in the FA Cup final (still referred to as one of the greatest finishes in football history); the Ford Cortina was Britain’s biggest selling car and Art Garfunkel had grown men crying with his best-selling single, Bright Eyes; when another no-less historic event was unfolding in Devizes.

It was the summer we were handed the keys to a run-down warehouse at the side of the canal and the dream of having our own dedicated theatre space truly began. 2019 is our Ruby Anniversary and we intend to celebrate in style. Join us in August for a summer extravaganza - full details to be announced!

Tuesday 31 July 1979Chairman Ann Walker receives the keysfrom Dr Tim Maurice - Kennet Council.

I am delighted to welcome you all to our Spring Summer programme, which promises to have something for everyone!

The Wharf had a spectacular year in 2018 with a number of sell-out shows. My thanks to everyone who came to support not only those shows produced in-house, but to those put on by visiting companies too. This wonderful 'buzz' around the theatre not only encourages audiences, but also attracts actors, directors, set builders, tech teams and Front of House staff and we are so grateful for their support.

If you would like to get involved yourself in any capacity, then please take a look at our website for more details.

WelcomeA message from the ChairSarah Williams

Once an impressive waterside warehouse standing on the banks of the Kennet and AvonCanal, the Wharf became a 96 seat theatre in1979. The Devizes & District Amateur Dramatic Society, formed in 1947, made it their home after moving from Couch Lane and the Wharf Theatre, as we know it today, was born. It remains the only dedicated theatre in East Wiltshire.

Today we are proud to offer high quality theatreand diverse entertainment with in-houseproduced musicals, plays, pantomimes, youthshows and live music along with guest theatrecompanies and speakers.

The Wharf is run by a community of volunteers and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our shows very soon.

A musical that inspired a generation; prepare ye for the timeless tale of friendship, loyalty & love based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew.

Godspell was the first major musical offering from three time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin) which took the West End and Broadway by storm.

Boasting a score with chart topping songs, the story is of a group of disciples that help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a variety of games, storytelling and comic timing. Join Stagecoach Trowbridge Further Stages as the most famous stories on earth dance across the stage!

A colourful cast of characters set off for Canterbury, competing to tell their tales of love, lust, adventure and chivalry. Brimming with verve and energy, Chaucer’s well-loved stories are brought beautifully and vividly alive by the students from Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

All of medieval life is here, with the wide range of social strata rubbing shoulders as the Miller, the Steward and the Wife of Bath (among others) all have their tales to tell.

The Canterbury Tales is a touchstone of English literature and has delighted readers for centuries
